It's so intimidating to hear the composer play their own very technical works so flawlessly that it makes you not even want to attempt playing it. Kapustin was truely a rare talent.💯❤️
It’s wonderful to hear the music played as he intended, to hear the original instead of one of the many fantastic interpretations out there. It sounds so geometric, like a fractal. I simply love it

Actually... Jazz is an art form, not an aesthetic. This is Classical music. Don't mean to be an ass, but I think the distinction is actually important because misidentifying Jazz is disrespectful to what is a unique art form.

I'm not interested in improvisation - and what is a jazz musician without improvisation? All my improvisations are written, of course, and they became much better; it improved them"
In his own version of the Toccatina, you can hear an extra "tessitura"(for the lack of a better word) melody that other pianists typically blur into some accompaniment.

И я с 4 лет играю на фоно и пишу музыку.. иниересно, что талант передался одной из дочерей моего брата - она на половину китаянка. Живут они в Калифорнии, я с ними общаюсь по видеовязи еженедельно, так она в 6 лет играет инвенции Баха, сонатины Бетховена и даже рег-таймы Джопплина и читает с листа! Сама бежит к инстументу и занимается одна, никто не помогает, кроме меня и то только по видео и не так часто. В муз.школе 1 час в неделю занятия. Это даже и не смешно! Очень жаль, что к её таланту нет должного внимания..

Hi! I’m 16 years old and I really like the sound of Kapustin. This group of etudes is special to me; I especially like the third one. The reason I know of Kapustin is that a Japanese jazz group called ‘Mouse on the keys’ did a rendition of that third etude and when I did some research into it, I found the rest of this set and I love it! I’m a hobbyist composer myself and this kind of jazzy, intricate style is exactly the kind of thing I’d love to learn how to emulate in my own work.
Why is it shocking? So many brilliant people and things came out of the Soviet Union. What, you think the USA is the only one that can be 'new and exciting'?
I think his "grumpy cat look" was a look of fear. Loving something as American as jazz is dangerous in present-day Russia. The KGB almost killed Shostakovich who was Russian from head to toe. What would they do with Kapustin and his fascination for American jazz? That was a look of fear and my heart goes out to this courageous composer who had a "soft spot" for America and its jazz! I am surprised he lasted as long as he did.

yet another criminally underrated 20th century composer. one with no qualms about fully embracing tonality. this music is unabashedly pretty and harmonically luxuriant, but perhaps still too complex and idiosyncratic for the average everyday music fan who lack an appetite for such a vigorous dismantling of artificial boundaries. he is neither traditionalist nor modernist; too jazzy to be 'classical' but far too formally complex to be labelled 'jazz.' Oddly enough, his kaleidoscopic compositional signature, with its fine-grained juxtaposition of "high" and "low," "popular" and "academic" styles, delivered with such ebullient rapid-fire virtuosity, calls to mind 1970s rock bands like Emerson Lake and Palmer, who combined Mussorgsky, Rachmaninoff, Ginastera (!) -- and others -- with elements of jazz, boogie-woogie, hard rock and blues. Everytime I hear his music I can't help but notice this (most likely completely accidental) parallel. 辻井伸行さんのコンサート動画で、「何だこのカッコいい曲は!」と衝撃を受けました。それがカプースチンの「コンサートエチュード/プレリュード」でした。全曲聴きたいと思って検索したらなんと本人の演奏があるではありませんか。8曲とも素晴らしい作品で感動しました。

re: as he intended - You're absolutely correct. Too many performers guild the lily - to show off the performer rather than to show off the music.

息子が3年前の発表会でプレリュードと2番を、そして昨日の発表会で6番と8番を演奏しました。
軽やかで楽しい曲だなと思い、原曲を聞きたくてやってきました。

辻井伸行さんの韓国ソウルでのリサイタルのアンコールで聴きました!さすがご本人の演奏は圧巻ですね!ジャズのテイストなのにバッハを聴いているようなシンプルで豊かな演奏に痺れました。

これだけジャズ要素があるとしても楽譜があるピアノ曲ですから、弾き手にアレンジを委ねるのは当然ですが、やはりカプースチン氏本人の演奏が一番しっくり来ます。このアルバムは娘と共にどれだけ聴いたかわからないほど聴きました。でもやはりグルーヴ感を持ちつつピアノ曲のように弾くのは本当に難しい。本当にすごいエチュードです。
