Protestors spray paint KOMO camera at UW encampment; conservative Charlie Kirk debates students

- A group of more than 200 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered on the University of Washington campus Tuesday night, with demonstrators twice using spray paint to vandalize the lens of a KOMO News camera.
Additionally, a KOMO News crew witnessed at least one fight during the demonstration, with at least 10 people involved in the skirmish. No arrests were reported and nobody appeared to be seriously hurt.
Throughout the protest, demonstrators held up black umbrellas as a means to block off access to the Quad on UW's campus. Moreover, several of the participants used plastic trash cans as a means to create a barrier between themselves and onlookers.

2:19 Conservative Commentator Charlie Kirk appeared on the UW campus Tuesday amidst heightened tensions, and just a few hundred yards away from a growing encampment at the Quad.
Kirk encouraged people to debate him about vaccines and foreign policy, and a couple hundred people stood around to watch the spectacle, which was rather calm at 1:30 p.m.
A stroll through the quad, home to protestors since last Monday, also appeared rather calm.
However, a few university police officers and security were seen near the borders of the Quad, and temporary fencing was seen in place, but students and faculty continued to stroll without obstruction through the popular campus spot.

I'm a UW senior and have watched a lot of Charlie Kirk's debates. It's the students or opposition who create the "social media worthy highlight reels" not his "instigation". UW is a very left leaning campus as are most universities. Conservative opinion, no matter the fashion in which it is orated, produces a strong reaction because these opinions are not represented in the course material on these campuses. When a conservative opinion is presented in course material it is done haphazardly because there just isn't any professors on campus who believe in the position's validity. I know the term "echo chamber" seems to be over-used but class discourse really can be summed up as a circle jerk 9 times out of 10 and there's no wonder why "social media worthy" content is regularly captured on these campuses.

@@jaysaini955IDK about grad school, undergrad engineering core classes aren't likely to be political, but electives are, and UW requires you have a certain number of credits that go towards diversity. Most of my core law classes aren't even about the law, they're about CRT and activism.

I'm so sorry to hear that, I wish it was about the subject rather then politics.
Even though I'm right leaning, I don't really talk about politics that loud. In fact, here at WSU, in my engineering classes. They are nothing but suffering due to the lack of sleep because of homework :).
But yeah I feel ya, I had a really mean english teacher who was so arrogant and made the class political. It was to the point that I had no idea what was going on because she graded so hard and her instructions were vague that I did not pass the class. I complained and I got her not to teach anymore and she hated me even more after that incident (She yelled at me during her office hours).
Otherwise, when I pick my electives, I do so very smartly. Like I look at rate my professors and do the classes that are so easy. And luckily, I haven't had any toxic classes yet. But I'm sorry UW is forcing you to take that stuff rather then what pertains to law.
But if you want, come to engineering, we are very cool people :)

I wondered the same but I’m assuming so they don’t get pepper sprayed by the police if it came to that. Very anti-police still, that area. Even though they’ve gotten a lot of what they demanded, they still irrationally fear the worst like victims.

Paul Kim, there’s no civil discourse that is even initiated when you begin the conversation with an insult of someone else who has a differing opinion from yours.
Stop being soft and trying to police discourse. Why are insults off limits? We insult one another every day when joking with our friends. Why can’t we use insults against people we disagree with? If wars can be called civil, then so can insults. If you can’t take the insult and give one back, that’s your problem. I’m pretty sure Charlie would be more than willing to insult him back.

For most of these protestors, Gaza is the reason du jeur for some thrill-seeking recreation at other's expense. The thousands of students on campus have a right to a peaceful, safe environment conducive to study and learning. The mask-wearing, shield-carrying, shemagh-wearing posers could be peacefully fund-raising and trying to raise awareness of the issues instead of drawing a line and daring others to cross. Their hostility serves only to alienate.
