this is one of the best grafting tutorials i've seen on youtube. i really appreciate your making it. would love to see how the landfill does on that graft in time ;)
This is the Method I've used ever since watching this video. Nearly 100% success, I can tell if it's bad within 24 hours of putting the Scion on. A bad connection usually starts flaring for me within a day. I live in a very dry Environment so they heal fast.
Side note “Looks like a green coloured pencil” great vid just today was curious as to how to graft. and I eventually want to try it with my ruby cactus :) i think its amazing that you can mix the cacti and get an amazing, creative and one of a kind peice of art!
This is really helpful, thanks! Can I ask, if I am using Pilocereus as a stock plant and it has good healthy roots but is not potted up, could I graft before potting it up or should I pot it up first? My instinct is that I could do it before potting up but I haven't done too much grafting so I'm not sure😂
You can graft before or after the stock has roots. I prefer after the plant has roots so I have some leverage to put the rubber bands on, but many ppl do graft before the stock has roots
Thank you for your tutorial, best one so far. Question, I’ve seen some people do a cactus graft with a tiny piece of cactus and not the growing tip. Why do people do that and are there benefits to it?
It's generally harder to hold down a larger piece. I personally prefer to cut off just the very tip of plants to graft. That way the mother plant has plenty of photosynthetic material to produce more pups for you, and since you're grafting its going to get big fast anyway so I feel using a larger piece to begin with sort of defeats the purpose. :)
I'm not sure what you mean by the last scion. The last scion I use in the video? Either way, the rings always have to overlap (like the Olympic rings). It doesn't work trying to connect them, although that is the instictive thing to do. I always give the analogy of trying to connect two straws, it never works.
Man that pisses off so bad when they slip off and jump across the garden lmao. Then gonna recut the Scion cause fresh cut is covered in dirt lol it never lands with the cut side up lol
Good question. The rootstock can really be any length, but I have noticed that the larger the stock, the quicker the growth. They tend to top out in growth speed at around 3 ft when potted though. I recently grafted a tip of the renowned bridgesii "CSD" to a 7 ft tall PC pachanoi :) :)
It's the main connection between the rootstock and scion, basically what transmits nutrients from the base to the scion. You can see it as a spot in the middle of the stock if you cut off the top.
Great tutorial! Love the cat and the boy cameos!
Great video would love to see a update on how these are doing after the graft has taken
Yes and possible techniques and methods for when grafting is completed. How would we go about that . thanks !
I like the blue shirt with the cactus.
I've never been to a San Pedro bris. Fascinating.
.............. lol
Great info and good demonstration!

Such a great tutorial Tyler. Thank you so much! Someday I'll be grafting my BBB (which I just purchased from Mallach's) to PC stalk.
Thank you my friend has been a nice sharing

Good tutorial
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the great details. One of the best grafting vids yet. Can you do one on peyote. What plants can you graft peyote to?
It is the same for the peyote i would use a pereskiopsis spathula. Which commony used to graft because it grows fast.
I always wondered what your voice sounded like!
Excellent explanation, thanks.
You're very welcome
Love your personality btw. you are seem like a really cool guy.
Thanks! That's a very nice compliment :)
Wow that is really interesting

Thank you for your tutorial, best one so far. Question, I’ve seen some people do a cactus graft with a tiny piece of cactus and not the growing tip. Why do people do that and are there benefits to it?
They're likely just trying to get as many grafts as possible for their efforts so they took apart the cactus in order to do so :)
So for the last scion do you layer the rings directly over or like the Olympic rings?
I'm not sure what you mean by the last scion. The last scion I use in the video? Either way, the rings always have to overlap (like the Olympic rings). It doesn't work trying to connect them, although that is the instictive thing to do. I always give the analogy of trying to connect two straws, it never works.
Great
Thanks
THANKS
More videos of eulychnia castanea f vari spiralis!! Please!!
:) Sure, we'll keep that in mind
How long do you keep the cellophane on? And should we keep them out of the sun for a while?
2-4 days - I use my shade house. It has a very mild shade cloth on it though, only 40%
No one ever seems to post videos of the graft a year or so later.
We'll try to do this soon
Thank you very much !
How long you typically leave it on, till the rubber bands comes off?
2-4 days, that's it. By then it has either taken or it hasn't.
Man that pisses off so bad when they slip off and jump across the garden lmao. Then gonna recut the Scion cause fresh cut is covered in dirt lol it never lands with the cut side up lol
Yep. This can be frustrating sometimes
The Root stock, Does it has to be that long?
Good question. The rootstock can really be any length, but I have noticed that the larger the stock, the quicker the growth. They tend to top out in growth speed at around 3 ft when potted though. I recently grafted a tip of the renowned bridgesii "CSD" to a 7 ft tall PC pachanoi :) :)
@@mallachtsplants so that's why ppl grafted on very long broomstick, thank you so much for answering my question
What is the vascular bundle?
It's the main connection between the rootstock and scion, basically what transmits nutrients from the base to the scion. You can see it as a spot in the middle of the stock if you cut off the top.
Nick covered this, but yes. Think vascular = veins for plants. The vascular rings should overlap, similar to how the olympic rings look.
can you use hydrogen peroxide to sterilize?
micah baca alcohol would be better because it evaporates extremely fast and leaves nothing behind.
