Las Vegas Tejano Showcase performance at Balleys Casino. Dee Delia Kevin Ricky Mikey Rene Carlos and Johnny G(me) I miss those wonderful 90's and its Tejano Music!
This is my uncle DEE DEE dude is mad talented. He always practiced as a kid. H e worked hard. Anything he wanted to do he accomplished. I'm proud of what he done. He solidified his self as a landmark in Tejano music. Even amongst his own race he's judged cuz he didn't do the popular music of our race but THAT is what makes it that more special. He's a black pioneer that sings Tejano music, writes, dances, and plays many instruments. You shouldn't judge or hate you should congratulate. I'd see what you sayin if he sucked or made a mockery of the culture of Tejano but he reps this and lives his music cuz he loves it. He respects it. Show some respect to a pioneer who furthered and pushed the genre as well as other talented artists. Get off his back.
+jeremy chastang wow! this is your uncle dee living here in denver. someone asked me what i used to do so i decided to look up some videos to show 'em. i'm surprised that you remember and think of me this way. i'm humbled and proud of your accomplishments, too. i keep in touch with your dad...ha ha. i've not looked backward since i retired from the industry. but, it does have fond memories. thank you again, nephew.
+Dee Burleson did you go to Holmes, I am Liz Campos Grossman went to school with you . I think I graduated with your sister before you. I have seen her round where I live . just to see what you are doing great now and to say Hello
I saw your uncle sing when I was in elementary school. It was a life changing experience and I think this group was overlooked by many to be one of the hallmark groups of the Golden Age of Tejano Music. I consider myself quite lucky that I had the fortunate experience to see groups like this, and it made me value music as a profession and career. I hope ethnomusicology will one day research and write on this topic and give Culturas the respect it deserves in the historical hallmarks of Texas music history.
In my part of the world the Afro-Americans they used to go to their cantinas and we to them .Old School dancers in Sinton ,Louis(luis) and Willie . They still do .The speak spanish .They lived in our barrio and were influenced by our proud and beautiful music .Viva los TEJANOS Y TEJANAS .
Hey da last post is correct. I'm Mikey da bass player of the original Culturas. And yes Andy was always walking around sayong "Ba BA Dice" those were da daze!
Oh, do I miss those glory days of Tejano music and San Antonio. Most fun times I ever had. Everybody LOVED Culturas as well as all the other wonderful bands. Nights at Fiesta dancing to La Charanga, Rosedale Park and Tejano nights, Hometown Boys, Ram, David Lee, Emilio, Shelly, and of course Selena. Tejano music really transformed the whole scene, and I loved every minute of it. KXTN radio was all I listened to back then. Yes, bring back Tejano!
Dang i remember wen tejano was the big thing i grew up listening to this kind of music. i still remember playin wit my dads band . i was like 4 and i loved playing this music. this new music that came out has nothing on tejano one of the best show band i saw wen i was yonger still loven it and still a tejano heart in houston tx. Bring it back to houston get stupid banda and duragense music out lonely in tejano music U still the best dee
Billy O and Kevin both played in the same band here in San Angelo, I got the chance to play along side Kevin....it was a little after Billy left for san Antonio.
I agree. With Selena's untimely death, Tejano took a real bad beating. No one was ever able to pick it up as much as she did. After she was gone there was no more competition or advancements in the music and sound. Jennifer Pena hasn't (in my honest opinion done much for the style of music)like Elsa Garcia, Selena, Elida, and Delia have. Also, I've noticed that all sort of different types of music and styles are being merged which (not all the time) tends to take away from that ....
These guys were defintely it back then. I heard the are working on a cd together and possibly getting back together. Great video, I would like to add it to my collection for get togethers and partys.
Glory days in San Antonio-yes! been there-done that. My-Our-Glory days were at the Poteet Strawberry Festival in the late 80's-early 90's at the Strawberry City Saloon jammin' to Culturas-La Sombra-La Fiebre-Mazz.....I can go on and on and on...thats when music meant something and you knew who you were and were proud of it.....Regardless!!!!!
there was a time when tejano music more about music than scantily dressed women and boy bands. delia, dee y culturas, laura canales, jay perez, selena, david lee garza, and so many others like them were proof that you didnt need to prance around showing ur naughty bits to the audience or take ur shirts off to make the teenage girls scream to be good tejano musicians. hopefully, the new generation can get back to the days when talent and effort made music.
man, what the hell happened to Tejano music?? Who killed it, here in west Texas we are subjected to listening to Mierdanguense music, if you can call it music. Sure miss Tejano!
Hi cassieburleson...I use to live down the street from Dee a long long time ago...just listening for kicks and to bring back some great memories! I was trying to find him on facebook just to say Hi! Can you tell him Hi for me please, TY :)
Does anyone happen to know what either Dee or Delia are doing now? Do either of them have a myspace page? You're right about them being the "it" band in the days...it would be really nice to see them back in action again.
being from monterrey,y love norteno, and when i arrive to texas,i didnt like texano at all,but slowly i come to love it,selena did a good and bad thing, she come to be too big for the genre,i feel bad about, norteno and cumbia geting over tejano on many places,i hope tejano comes to a very good rank not just in texas but every were,in monterrey they love tejano, but its sending to many nortenos and cumbieros to usa, long life to la onda, excuse my english,i love tejano
Genial grupo, lastima que al separarse ya no fue lo mismo y ya no los vimos aca en Monterrey... My favorite song... Asi lo quisiste, verdad ???? aja jaja
They had a music video that had a pretty good budget for a Tejano video in the mid 90s. What was the name of the song? All I remember about the video, is that it was filmed in a auto repair garage and the band were pretending to be mechanics.
Norteno started from Tejano so thats why it sounds close to it. Tejano started way before Norteno. Most of the the old Tejano musicans know that. Last week I had breakfast with Johnny Degallado a famous conjunto musician and writer and he told me the whole story. Norteno didnt start until the fifties. Tejano had been around way before that.
tejanochris well not really norteño with out the bajo sexto and just the acordeón started with Antonio Tanguma from China Nuevo León he created many famous songs such as el cerro de la cilla so no they kind of both started around similar times since the 1920s, and many acordeonist in northern Mexico would play the acordeón way before him, the bajo sexto came after of course with the influences of the first conjunto music recordings that included the bajo sexto like Narciso Martínez which was one of the first to record with an acordeón and a bajo sexto
which is raw Tejano. Don't get me wrong, it's good to bring in new beats and rhythms (AB Quintanilla and Pete Astudillo did that and made wonderful music), but not to the point that Tejano loses its identity and sort of becomes a spectacle instead of a celebration of Tejano life and culture (ie: the new Tejano fusion going on with the rap music and neon colored outfits, kinda like Rudy y Los Nuevos Huevos Rancheros from Born in East L.A.)
@kyhecnico amen brother, I remember a tribute show to Selena a couple years back and damn if they didn't have that piece of shit band Montez de Durango playing on it, that shit pissed me off!! I live in Odessa, Tx I don't mind the good norteño bands every once in a while, Tigres, Invasores...but mostly I listen to country sisnce it's the closes we have to tejano... our only tejano station is on a.m. and it sounds like shit plus they play the same stuff we would hear back in the 90's.
Hey just because your not Chicano doesn't mean that there are a lot of Chicanos that come from Mexican backgrounds... Yeah we might have different taste in music but because of Tejano all the other Mexican music came to be popular... I mean don't get me wrong I love the Mexican music and I am from Mexican parents and I love Tejano... But just a piece of advice... Don't insult the taste of other viewers... If you don't like it then don't watch it... Simple as that! Good day!
did someone say she wanted to be like selena. these songs were out before selena was in tejano scene. so if some one said that estan malo del culo. : )

Billy O and Kevin both played in the same band here in San Angelo, I got the chance to play along side Kevin....it was a little after Billy left for san Antonio.
So Kevin is a gringo who just likes Tejano music huh?
Culturas was a high energy band and could really entertain a crowd. Tejano music misses them and their style.
Thanks for posting the viedo
I loved this group when I was a little girl 😘
wow where are these good musicians at now? this song is the sh*t. so beautiful. delia rocked it. they should really play again.where did they go?
Tejano, I love the fact the blacks and mexicans can be on the same stage singing the same music.
pongan mas videos de culturas porfa.
Remember "El Charro Negro", Bobby Butler. He was a hell of a singer. Happy to see different cultures enjoying the same music

Tejano slowly but surely is dying out. Sad but true.
man, what the hell happened to Tejano music?? Who killed it, here in west Texas we are subjected to listening to Mierdanguense music, if you can call it music. Sure miss Tejano!

As Dee puts it....He's a black man from San Antonio.
He is African American. Many thought he was Cuban or some other latino...but nope ....

Delia sings- Damelo (Intro) then Golpe Traidor
Dee sings- Loco Loco
Culturas--Dee & Delia--broke up the band way too soon. In my opinion, they were on the verge of being one of the biggest Tejano bands in the world.
