Lots of effects work. They shoot the raw footage of cities, timelapse, etc. Model the building blocks and things like that in 3D modeling programs such as Maya, then put the models into the footage using effects programs such as After Effects, Toxik, etc. Lots of motion tracking and that sort of thing. Surprisingly it's all extremely self teachable, especially with the internet at hand. I've seen a lot of student and amateur work very close or even matching this quality. Hope that helps!
Check out "This Binary Universe" by BT. Or just search for ambient music. TONS of good stuff out there. Pandora is a good spot but unfortunately there is no Masato Hatanaka on there. But just start an ambient station and you will have more artists than you can keep track of.
