LYRICS
You took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
And I watched from my window
Always felt I was outside looking in on you
You're always the mysterious one with
Dark eyes and careless hair
You were fashionably sensitive
But too cool to care
You stood in my doorway, with nothing to say
Besides some comment on the weather
Well in case you failed to notice
In case you failed to see
This is my heart bleeding before you
This is me down on my knees, and
These foolish games are tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
You're always brilliant in the morning
Smoking your cigarettes and talking over coffee
Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you
You loved Mozart and you'd speak of your loved ones
As I clumsily strummed my guitar
You'd teach me of honest things
Things that were daring, things that were clean
Things that knew what an honest dollar did mean
I hid my soiled hands behind my back
Somewhere along the line, I must have gone off track with you
Excuse me, guess I've mistaken you for somebody else
Somebody who gave a damn
Somebody more like myself
These foolish games are tearing me
You're tearing me, you're tearing me apart
And your thoughtless words are breaking my heart
You're breaking my heart
And you took your coat off, stood in the rain
You're always crazy like that
2024 you with me?
Yup!
Always.
Here!
let's go!

Jewel is unmatched. This song is timeless. Her voice is perfection.
Absolutely Jewel's voice is quite simply a taste of perfection❤❤❤

She is a Jewel!
@@ABadea-zq1gcyou Don't Remember your Birthday!?

In 1996, 12 year old Jordan hated this song. Now, 39 year old Jordan in 2024 finally gets it.
🙃 Is anyone still listening in 2024?
This song stands the test of time! I grew up in a broken home, now at 32 semi-healed, i can now remove this song from a parent playing it on repeat, on *those* type of days from childhood and look at it objectively. Honestly, WOW, just wow... I've never felt more connected to my now passed away parent.
Here, girl 🙏
Listening right now at 04:35 a.m. In Buenos Aires
Listening to it right now in Norman Wells, NWT Canada always makes me feel connected and sad but good kind of sad
Nice song.. but why have the video about witches ?
Si
Funny that when you're a kid, you never imagine yourself getting old, or that the world as you know it will change drastically. All unimaginable things when we're young and careless. Fast forward 25 years and you lost touch with your childhood friends, working an average job, often reminiscing of the past. God damn did we ever take these times for granted. It's almost humbling in a weird twisted way. What a song. What an era. What a time that was. Amazing. Cheers to anyone that knows what I'm sayin'.
Exactly ..same over here in England ..I am a lighting and sound engineer of 18 years for the same firm and just got made redundant ..a big twist to the plot of my life ...Tim 😀

I just rediscovered jewel after 8+ years, can't believe I forgot but what an experience to have again.
Just turned 45 and I totally agree.

It's 2023 and this song has aged so well it's one of the rare classics that came from the 90s. When I first heard this song I was in my mid 30s and 26 years later it still sounds fresh Jewel should have been a much more recognised talent worldwide
Yes but she told too much truth to make it more mainstream.. I heard interesting stories about how Neil Young and another famous guy I forget helped her with her eventual mass exposure.. She was homeless for much of her youth and dealt with so much..
I'm grateful to realize the enlightening messages held within this lovely cd, or tape, or phone or tv video depending on your era(s) lol
So many classics came from the 90s

I was in the Army when this video first came out. I was in the barracks with my platoon when the video started to play on tv. Forty-five seconds in, you couldn't hear a pin drop. All 25 of us went quiet raptured on a journey with this lovely woman and her enchanting voice. Then, rage against the machine came on. We never spoke of it. We did start talking about football, drinking, and talking 💩. So it was in the infantry.
The 90’s were such a different vibe I love it

And to think this girl was homeless living out of a car, the world almost never knew who Jewel was and that would have been pretty sad. The sheer control she has over her voice is amazing.
@evilcowboy What she was homeless before?? Oh shit how could I have not known? It looks like I'm not a true fan of hers to not have known this. I feel so bad for what she went through. I now see her more as a human being than just your snobby wealthy famous musician now. I always thought she was the type of person that was raised with a silver spoon in her mouth you know the type of people that had it very easy through out life.
@@RussX5Z This girl was not homeless. Her and her father left their home in homer Alaska to try their singing abilities. She did travel with a partner after splitting with her dad and I'm sure she spent a lot nights under the stars but she was never homeless in the sense of the homeless people you see on the streets asking for money. You both do know who her father is and uncles are don't you.
@@1sonic687 alrighty then.
@@bigcity420 No, she was homeless for about year, after she got kicked out of the residence where she stayed, then she decided to live in her car while saving money to rent a new department, but then she went down with kidney decease and got fired for her consequent absence at work, that's when she found herself without any money and health insurance to the extent she nearly died of infection in the parking lot of a hospital because they wouldn't admit her because of that, but for a kind doctor spotting her lying on the floor and giving her the treatment she needed, she would have probably died. She also felt compelled to shoplift food in order to survive for a while, so yes, she was indeed homeless once.
And Oh! I edit this comment because I forgot to mention she had her car stolen, so she was left with nothing during that tough time in her life.

SkaMasta097 She's good..... VERY GOOD, actually..... but she didn't do anything different with her cover to make it stand out (which I was hoping for), her cover was actually refreshing in a way, with her voice alone.

Who has the intellect that still can endure male-female acceptance and approval as-in-by humanity? Classicism+Romanticism resolute decorrum of integrated sensation in lyrics and prosody of music.. ultimate jazz in some Saint-Sance softness compressed inti rocking revolt.. as in this song is.. if same-sex- relationism or bisexuality was human.. then children really would't by default be. If abominators in such courses were intellectualy civilized then childten woyld only be -by sentence- mad born of pure silent sin-outs. ..
..
This song still can reflect the female adorance to a male but in fear of lose of sexual sensation of essences due to some arrogance performed by the adored male.
.. Like a true story, it is an emergecy by really undergone sensations obviously.
..
Still music can provide language of feeling for spoken lyrics in some artists minds and hearts where melodies are lyrics as other partitions of (ac)cord and harmony of comprehensivity..
..
Truely..: "Really a good song." at all..
WTF does that mean? Same old art/ music/ movie critic gibberish.
There are actually very good singers AND rappers. Not every single singer/rapper talk about mindless crap
People always want to say that music has devolved but that just isn't the case. Mainstream music has ALWAYS been dumbed down for the most part, this is not a new trend. If you want to hear good music you can find it, just don't focus on the mainstream. There are thousands of great and creative artists that make music today that just isn't mainstream.
It's good to be mysterious. Great song.
I Wish the Best For You!

@@dw4735 im only 21 first person i got to see live was her at the farmers market
Too bad she went pop after this album 😕
@@toriboy25 I feel like this is still a pop ballad tbf.
Hehehe. Still true.
This is about the twentieth time I find out this song is originally from Jewel. Why do I always think and keep thinking someone else sung it first.
Winning in the morning is part of that personality type.
Jewel's best song. Can you believe it's over 20 Years Old?
no i can't believe that. it was only yesterday i heard it the first time and i was in high school then.
It's officially a Golden Oldie. And you are almost eligible for AARP. :O)
what's aarp?
Hi Sultan... Sorry it's just a little common joke about age. AARP is a retired persons organization that that begins to hound everyone with letters--several a week from the time they are close to 50 years old.
American Association of Retired Persons AARP.
BellinghamsterTrail and they never stop hounding you with letters does not matter if you give them money or not...you will receive a letter at least once a week for the rest of you life asking for $$$$$$
No one will ever have her voice. I miss the 90's so bad. I'd give my life if everyone else could go back.
alot of people miss the 90's, im one of them, wonder why?

Back when they assigned artist who actually had talent and can sing
Coming back for the nostalgia... my mom would always play this when I was a kid... reminds me of simpler times.... can we go back and leave 2020 behind ? 😭
Yes! Save a spot on your time machine for me please.
Wait... You wanna go BACK in time and leave 2020 BEHIND you?? Lol sounds good and all but just one small issue there😂😂😂
@Thomas Hurley That's an absolutely horrible thing to say! I'm just gonna take a wild guess that you are human and not perfect either. Those "freaks" are just trying to be comfortable enough in their own skin to make their way through this shit show called life however they can just like the rest of us. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder so just cause the "freaks" aren't "cute chicks" for you to gawk at doesn't mean someone doesn't think they're beautiful for who they are inside and out. You are entitled to your opinion but did your mother forget to teach you that if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all? The way people treat each other so poorly and judge each other for things that are frankly none of their business anyhow is a way bigger problem in this day and age than trans people or those struggling with their gender or sexuality.
This was popular when my Mom was dying and it was breaking my heart ❤️
Im korean and my mom also always played this song in 90s.. it is so nostalgic 😢
This song brings tears to my eyes. So haunting. Amazing voice.
Hello Good morning how are you doing today and how is the weather over there?
I've always payed close attention to words. These lyrics are very beautiful and Jewel is just that....a jewel
The yodeling queen 💕
*An era that everything we heard mattered!*
Amen
says every generation*
I miss this
Yeah I honestly can't stand most of the shit on the radio these days.
AA LITTLE DID WE REALLY KNOW. HOW A TRUE LOVE COULD BECOME THE VERY THING THAT COULD POSSIBLY DESTROY US. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE LORDS GRACE TO HEAL THE WORLD WOULD DEFINITELY BE HELL ON EARTH 🙏🕊️🙏😢
"Your philosophies on art, Baroque moved you, you loved Mozart"
Incredibly written lyrics and so eloquently sung.
fuckin epuc
Beautifully written but I can never sing this part. It is like a tongue twister
Such a beautiful line. I love poetry and that line is just magnificent.
"Somebody who gave a damn. Somebody more like myself."
I feel that.
Baroque moves no man - he was lying lol
Man, I forgot how beautiful and soothing her voice is.
She's beautifully ethereal.
2023. Who is still listening. And still Loving this artist and her outstanding music and lyrics. Who else misses her? I wish she was still touring. So glad I lived During the best music era of all time. Late 80s and 90s were
Truly the best.
I still think she is an amazing singer and song writer. She is still touring. She toured last year on usa and on london (you can find the video on youtube), and several days ago she also had a show (sang) on tokyo japan
She had a few hits
So respect her talent... I so miss the 90's when music had depth and meaning.
Not to pounce on ya, but there's some really great, meaningful music made last decade (thinking of to pimp a butterfly as an example)
Man how times have changed! Back in the day singer/songwriters like her were actually famous! Now the top charts are filled with twerk songs, meaningless rehashed country & auto tune!
Reaper Kezia YES~ CHALLANGE FOR: Justin Bugar boy. Where? NYC's Times Square. You VS Rob from Judas Priest! & Miley Whore-less VS Lisa Marie Presley! I seriously doubt Justin Buggar Boy or Miley Whore-less would have the GUTS to show up.... Rob... would be there 3 days early, with his boys, & all the other TALENTED METAL GODS! & Lisa's father would be watching from above..... What a neat day-dream huh....
What else is there? ~ I miss the 80's & 90's. I love how the "Stones" are touring this summer I have "Sympathy for the Devil." I do 10 minutes of step aerobics every single morning to "Sympathy." To clear the "noise" out....
"That girl has a great ass." is a part of 7 Sinful Funny Stories. By Lilliana Cross on www.amazon.com. & on Kindle.... That is where I got that awesome idea from.... What a COVER! ~ dam man SHE has sympathy for Lucifer, alright! ~ Gore w/ a ROAR!
Reaper Kezia One of the short story's , in 7 Sinful Funny Stories: is "Nightmares for the Teasing." OMHG THIS is what SVU is NOT! Raven lures the "Rooster" to her home. & Well you gotta read the rest. Let's say, this is what happens when you turn the tables on an animal~ If only the "writers" on NBC SVU would get a clue, This is a game changer! Gore with a ROAR!
***** I completely agree! For me music isn't about the genre. It's about if it's talented, has thought & effort put into it & has real instruments & not filters on vocals
I’m torn between emotions. Sad that the best decade to ever exist in the 90’s is dead and gone but also blessed I got to experience it.
Heard this song on the radio,Can't believe after 13 years I finally found this song randomly.Amazing
I was born in the early 90s and I have to say that I miss hearing songs like this one. Jewel has always been one of my favorite singers. She is a genuine artist, who writes and sings songs about GENUINE human emotion, unlike so many of those meaningless, hip-shaking songs we hear today but still call "music". One of the sad things about young people today (not to mention the generations still to come) is many of them don't even know what REAL MUSIC is all about. I've seen it in my own friends. They only want that loud, feel-good sound that makes them turn up their car stereos until the speakers burst. All they've ever heard is the hip-shaking, booty-bouncing, foot stomping nonsense they hear in clubs and on the radio. And you know what's even sadder than that? Most of the people singing those songs all sound very much alike! Honestly, it is hard to tell many of them apart when you listen to them. Where is that diversity in music we used to love so much?
all generations say that about the current generations. i was born in early 80's and i think modern music is crap. my parents said that about music i liked. i'm sure my grandparents thought the beatles were a loud racket and not music. truth be told, real music is from mozart, beethoven, strauss, vivaldi etc... i listen to them and realise anything else is just not music. however, jewel and others like her are actual modern musicians. in my opinion anyway.
sultanabran1 I think your right but I like all sort of music from classic to rock ,pop and rap... I think because music these days has so much money in the industry... it's all about fake artists and musician... Song are written for artists because they can sing, lip sinking at concerts, silly song with outrageous video clips that make songs popular and i tunes where 1 hit wonders can make a fortune... Critics didn't know how to rate the music from the 90's good or bad it doesn't matter because it was the last decade before the internet changed everything... Turning pop to top channel v use to play all types of music and so did many others underground, hits and lost musician now it all about the top 40 and that's every channel just about.. half the band's I listen to I can not found on i tunes
I was born in the late '50s. This is good music for any generation. There is much more to come. You must understand at your age, (and mine), certain music stands the test of time. Hold true to the music you love. It is your life, and oh, so short. No one can be you, and you can be no one else. The most beautiful music ever made is the music from within your heart.
Well said
James Farris beautifully put :)
Here I am, 45 years old and loving life, then I listen to this song yet again and I did check, the hair on my arms are standing right up and my eyes are watering. Timeless classic this song, absolutely brilliant.
This song hurts when you think about that person who broke your heart
'your thoughtless words are breaking my heart..'
My wordless thoughts broke someone's heart
Cathartically
My mom used to play this song when i was younger and this song reminds me of our broken relationship:(
I remember this song so well because I was going through a divorce at the time and it hit a nerve. I cry every time I hear it.
Jewel was Gen Xs Taylor that most of us never knew we had. Incredible voice and timeless classics. Those of us that discovered her knew all the words because they meant something.
Have you seen Jewel woodstock 99 who will save your soul on youtube? Amazing!
This song hits home every time. 2023 September and Im still listening to it.
The 1990s really were some of the best times for music. We had a variety of really good music from singer/songwriters like Jewel, Sarah Mclachlan, and Lisa Loeb to bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, and Nirvana. No matter what type of music you liked we were lucky enough to have amazing artists in every type of music. That will never happen again.
Yup, so much variety and depth in the rock/alt rock/pop genres. These days everything is so bland. Call me old, but it's true
Selena's music is timeless and 90s was here decade!!
Bone Thugs N Harmony
Green Day
Tragically Hip
This song hurts so much. You literally can feel her pain and see it on her face. So hauntingly beautiful.
Jewel was the Queen. My true love as a teenager. The greatest.
I took my coat off and stood in the rain. It wasn’t a conscious action! It just what was!
I'm 37 years old. This song just reminded of how much Jewel's music got me through the beginning of my life. Thank you Jewel.
Amazing how music can take us anywhere we need to go...be it mourning or sweet love memories
39 and same sis!
Stephanie you are beautiful
You know you are great.
Talk.
I close my eyes and I'm back in 7th grade every time I listen to Jewel. As a now 38 yr old, I Love and cherish those memories. 💙
I can relate. Jewel's Pieces of You takes me back to the late 90s. I'm 53 and was 26 when this came out. Bill Clinton was president. There were no cell phones or social media. Everyone had VCRs and VHS tapes. Music was mostly CDs and cassettes. Such a simpler time.
So powerful without meaning to necessarily .... Love it
41/same
Until you grow up and realize she had no clue what she was talking about
I'm 43 and it takes me back to a 16 year old me
There are things people dont realize about Jewel, if they never read her poetry books. Shes a master of her art.
What a voice. The whole song is just beautiful. I remember when I first seen this video in Canada on much music it rose quickly to the top of our charts, and rightfully so. A great song and a gorgeous lady, if I may say?
When you are young you have the whole world ahead of you. Your dreams, hopes and expectations of a life to be are all seemingly attainable. Then weeks, months, years and eventually decades pass us by and all of a sudden we realize the dreams, hopes and expectations have not come to fruition and we are living our reality with no time to readjust or change the path in our lives like we could have done while we were young. For some life turned out amazing while many struggle with the reality of what they have built. Regrets are not worth it as those feelings are not worth the time it takes to think about them. The key is to realize you can change your life and from this moment forward set new realistic goals for what you can achieve with the time you think you have remaining. Time stands still for none! If you are watching life pass by then grab it and finish strong with what YOU want from what's remaining... good luck to all and don't finish with regrets of the things you should have done!

Who's here after watching her on American Idol? This woman is timeless, hasn't aged a bit.
