  • Bombs and flight. Atrocities and suffering. As the war in Ukraine shakes the world, Russia spreads propaganda, falsely claiming that this war is about the "denazification" of Ukraine. In this film, 10 people tell their stories - and give the war a human face.
    Ten people talk about their experiences of the war in Ukraine. All were interviewed immediately after the war began. Yaroslav is 17 and had to flee from Kharkiv to Germany without his parents. The war turned him into an adult within a very short time: "Damn, what I would give to hang out with my buddies again in Kharkiv, even to go back to school, to class! Why do you only start to appreciate something when you lose it?" Alla, 69, spent more than half her life in Moscow and has now lived in Cologne for many years. She is ashamed of Russia and stunned by what happened: "For me, there are no halftones. There is only black or white. Russia is the aggressor." Roman, 40, sees it differently. He was born in Odesa and has lived with his family in Germany for more than 30 years. "This is a military operation, to protect the population of the Donbass region. This is my personal opinion."
    Everyone in the film has a direct connection to this conflict. They’re all a part of this European war - a term Europeans have had to reintroduce into their daily vocabulary 77 years after the end of World War II. Valerij, a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church in Wiesbaden, is Ukrainian by birth: "It is a fratricidal war. The history of mankind begins with murder. One brother kills another. Cain killed Abel. Why?"
    Vitali is a renowned director from Moscow with Ukrainian roots. He has made documentaries about Gorbachev and Putin, among others, and now lives in exile in Latvia: "If every Russian citizen hung a Ukrainian flag in his window, this government would collapse under the weight of Ukrainian flags. And now let's take a look around: How many flags are hanging in Russian windows? Three, four? Ah, none at all?! Then what else do you want!"
    Ten interviews with 10 people. No archive pictures, no clips from the news, no commentary. Nothing that distracts from the speakers - so that viewers can really hear their voices.

    Roman; a Russian (or from the Soviet Union as he so proudly stated) living in obvious comfort in Germany, talking about 'a military action to protect the people in the Dombas region' as if nobody has been killed and peoples' lives are not in ruins now. If he is so fond of Putin, he should definitely leave his comfy chair, his good meals, and go and offer his service to Putin's Russia. Otherwise he is just a hypocrite.

    Roman should go to Russia and experience "the proper way of living" in Russia. Despising so much a freedom of speech and protest and living in the country that embodies it. Also, this guy clearly didn't check what is going on with Ukraine after 2014 and all the improvements we had. He still sees the Ukraine of 1992. Why he even was taken for commenting.

      When he said "In USSR we were not differentiating between Ukrainian and Russian", I knew he was Russian. Of course they were differentiating, there's still huge xenophobia in Russia, especially towards people from the Asian republics. And all that Donbas talk of his, he was simply lying for 2 minutes with a straight face. Btw, I've seen him on other German TV programs. He's simply a Putinist abusing the freedoms that European democracy gives him. The freedoms that are nonexistent in Russia. And he lives safely in a NATO state and the EU. A hypocrite.

    Roman is a walking lesson in logical/rhetorical fallacies. Whataboutism, strawman arguments, illicit commutativity, card stacking, post hoc, etc, etc. His commentary should be used in university to teach students how to see through and refute paper thin arguments

    • @rimed5718
      @rimed5718 Рік тому +1

      That wasn't whataboutism. He acknowledged what Russia is doing to be wrong, then expressed his opinion about why he thinks Russia attacked, and said that the west should have showed up during the years where Ukraine was shelling those regions, instead of now acting like the human rights defender. Again it's his opinion, and you can see the very same logical fallacies in the west's narrative. There is no absolute truth, but we know that attacking people is 100% wrong, so calm down.

    • @EeroMyrsky
      @EeroMyrsky Рік тому +5

      @@rimed5718 Ok, I have to say it, it's really amusing how in the same sentence you say "There is no absolute truth" followed by "It's 100% wrong to..." which is an expression of your belief in an absolute truth.
      I don't believe I attacked a person here, but rather a position and an argument. However, I also disagree that it is 100% wrong to confront ("attack") people on these matters. In fact, I would argue that we have an obligation to do so when we see or hear an argument that we think is flawed/incorrect and potentially harmful or damaging.
      I have to assume you actually agree with me on this point, because you decided to confront me.
      As for the whataboutism, I was going to rewatch the video to find timestamps, but then remembered that life was short. In any case, the point I was making was not on whether or not there are cases of whataboutism here, but rather, that his arguments are logically flawed. If that means I'm attacking him, so be it.

    • @EeroMyrsky
      @EeroMyrsky Рік тому +1

      @@DeJulius_Caesar Really? I fail to see how.

    • @rimed5718
      @rimed5718 Рік тому

      @@EeroMyrsky Listen, there is no absolute truth regarding "why Russia attacked", but it is 100% wrong to kill innocent people. The dude stated his belief regarding the motivation of Russia to attack, which is as uncertain as all the other narratives.
      Forcing him to share your opinion is just abuse of freedom of thought and expression. Of course there are cases where people should be shut, like those who hold Nazi views and ask for corruption/violence. However, I don't see any request for violence in what he said. So, I don't see why you're so angry. I don't agree with you entirely on that point.
      I don't see his arguments flawed. He gave a sound opinion about what he belives. He said that according to his opinion "Russia is carrying this operation to protect the people who were shelled for 8 years" However, he stated that he doesn't take any side, because he lived in the soviet Union and they were all the same. He criticised germany for showing up only now by providing arms, while it could have prevented this (according to him) in the past by condemning Ukraine's shellings on those Russians, or stopping it.
      I don't see where is whataboutism here, or any of the ones your stated. This is how he sees things. I think that the west"s version of "Putin feeling insecure and scared of Biden, so he started acting out" is more wild than this opinion. If you want to see real logical fallacies, I would recommend to you a documentary about the west and Russia. Just tell me.
