- Dexter stars Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, and Julie Benz gave a panel at Steel City Con March 2023 to talk about the show, their experiences, and answer fan questions.
Michael C. Hall is Dexter Morgan in Dexter and also reprised his role in Dexter: New Blood. He is also known for his roles in Six Feet Under, Paycheck, Gamer, The Defeated, Star vs. The Forces of Evil, The Crown, The Report, and many more.
Jennifer Carpenter portrayed Deborah Morgan in Dexter and appeared in Dexter: New Blood as well. She is also known for her roles in Quarantine, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Dragged Across Concrete, Ballistic, The Enemy Within, Limitless, Gone, and more!
Julie Benz was Rita Bennett (and later Rita Morgan) in Dexter. She is also known for her roles in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Hawaii Five-0, Defiance, No Ordinary Family, Angel, Roswell, Desperate Housewives, A Gifted Man, and many more.

I agree that some seasons were really bad especially towards the ending. But what made me stay was how brilliant Michael C Hall throughout the series. That guy is born to play Dexter

Same!!! I season 7-8 were soooo bad. The first half of 7 was good but it fell off so bad once Hannah was introduced. But same here about Michael. He just does Dexter soooo good

Disagree I enjoyed every season of Dexter sure some not as much as other ones but they are all good in their own way but also the writters changed after season 4 so there is a difference in style and writing for sure.
@@abbiarguello4969season 7 was a great season. But I do agree season 8 was lack luster & filled with a lot of scenes that added up to nothing. Like Jennifer(deb) answered would’ve been great to see Debra shoot Dexter in the last episode & season 8 is just dexter arrested facing trial, last episode of the season is him in the electric chair with Hannah, Debra, Jaime, Batista, the whole department saying their goodbyes/watching in the spectators room before he’s eventually killed/electrocuted. Even to have a spin off Harrison could be watching too & that’s what later drives him off to do the same is watching everyone his father trusted betray him.

I really really really really liked how Jennifer played Debra. She was at her best when having panic attacks or under a lot of stress. I really believed her.
And when she was shot by Vogels son. The scene in the ambulance. She was so good
Deb having that meltdown at the parking lot after Lundy... makes me cry every time I watch it. Some of the best acting I have ever seen

Just finished Dexter rerun 1-8 season for the 3rd time. Still one of my favorite TV series.
Just finished for the 3rd time and already want to start again to see veryone alive and together on season 1.. damn !!! I wish I never watched that series.. so sad now that is over and how its over
I am literally rewatching the entire original series (will NOT watch New Blood again, it was horrible), anyway this is around my 12th viewing.

Nah I loved Dexter New Blood despite the flaws also the ending was lame and surprisingly very depressing to me. I couldn't watch early Dexter knowing how he died. But on the bright side we got to see Modern Day Dexter, it was so surreal and exciting and at least most of the season made up for the dog crap of season 8. It was cool seeing an older Dexter coming out of retirement and also being more unhinged and lose with the code.
Also episode 9 of New Blood was one of the best Dexter episodes to me. And loved how they reminded you graphically what a sick dude Dexter was despite being more good then evil.

That actress and character was SO bitchy, bossy, demanding, and annoying...my son and I cheered when she died. Any rewatching Dexter now includes fast-forwarding through Rita's scenes.

Literally just started to watch this show last week. Im on season 7 right now n fuckin love it. I stayed up late as hell,till like 1am for some n when Rita died, I was crushed n couldnt stop cryin. Then couldnt fall asleep 😂
Lmao I love how nonchalant Michael was with just agreeing with the audience that yeah new blood made some mistakes. I actually really liked the new series except for the last ep.

I thought it was great not perfect and the last episode was meh and rushed.
I didn't see it as Michael being nonchalant. It was watching a great actor pretend it wasn't a garbage final season or just not caring. Dexter didn't caught by seasoned Miami homicide cops and the FBI to name a few but a police chief in a small town (population 1,400) who had a serial killer right under her nose for 20 years and had no clue is the person who ends up being the one who brings Dexter down. Swiss cheese has less holes in it than most of the storylines in New Blood and I was hoping that Michael C. Hall got talked into doing what he thought would be a quality last season only to find out it wasn't but sadly, this interview proved me wrong.
I think Michael as a fan just like the rest of us would've liked to have the last season be about Dexter. Either him struggling with what he did, the mess he left behind and trying to navigate his new life while still dealing with his dark passanger but instead he got sidelined in his own show by a character nobody really gave a crap about and a wasted villain (also played by a fantastic actor).
@@everybodylieshm The only reason they did New Blood, aside from the money was due to viewer rage at the horrible ending of the first show. Debra's body being dumped in the ocean in the same way Dexter dumped serial killers and other horrible human beings. New Blood was supposed to make that right, that's what bringing Debra back was all about and they came up with an ending that was worse than what they were trying to make up for. Michael C. Hall sold out by acting as if this ninth season was anything other than garbage.
I want these guys to be back on another season of Dexter. I know it´s not going to happen, but I just wish it.

She did seem ill at ease and I don't understand why Julie acted like she was the bigger deal on the show when she was only in half of the series and not at all in New Blood.

Debra was my favorite character. She didn't deserve the season 8 send-off.
I didn't like the way they gave her such a gutter mouth. The F bombs were way overdone. At the beginning, I thought it was because she worked Vice but even when she got her wish to get into Homicide and finally be taken seriously as a cop, she still did it.
Its not about what you like, Deb's death was vital for Dexter's arc that he was foolish to think that he could live a double life, which is what he strived to do through the whole show. Deb's death was his final realisation that he couldn't do it, so he saved Harrison and Hannah by attempting to off himself

@@debra2700People took Debra serious as a cop because of her amazing police work, her instincts were insanely good in A LOT of cases. When Debra became Lieutenant and swore on Live T.V and Matthew’s spoke to her about it, he had even expressed how it was fresh and authentic compared to previous LT’s, which is true. Sure Deb could have swore less but that didn’t ever take anything away from how good she was at her job.
@@KanineLive Debra was stuck in Vice until Dexter gave her the tip that got her promoted to homicide and what examples show her to be an "insanely good" cop? Emotionally she was a mess and no one showed that more than Brian Moser who showed how pathetically needy she was and that's what almost got her killed until Dexter saved her.

Jennifer seemed pretty uncomfortable. I think being close to an ex, a true ex, would do that to most people. I dont know for sure thats why she seems so unnerved but i think its a good and educated guess. Unresolved feelings.
They're very close friends so it can't be the ex thing. Maybe she figured Michael would get most of the questions and then Julie kept stepping in and taking advantage of the fact that Jennifer seemed almost shy.
I mean, they claim to be close friends, but people lie when they've got an entertainment conglomerate telling them to smile for the cameras. Her body language says that she doesn't like sitting with or engaging him. Idk what happened in their marriage, but they sure don't look close to me.
@@ContentMadame I've watched a bunch of these from different shows and it seems that the audience can direct too many questions at one or two people and leave the others out. It has to be uncomfortable for the people sitting there getting very little attention. The worse one I ever watched was the cast of Pretty Woman and all of the questions were directed to Julia Roberts and Richard Gere to the point that it was embarrassing for the others. I think the dynamics of these "show reunions" tend to be stressful. From everything I've read, Jennifer and Michael have remained great friends.

When Dexter threw Deb threw in the sea, I hated that part because he threw killers there it was like sending Deb to the killers. Also allowing Hannah a killer for her greed, back in his life after trying to kill his sister, hate Dexter for that!!!

You know, I always wondered if the Trinity Killer told Rita who Dexter really was before killing her... It would have been interesting to see if Rita found out before she died.

New Blood was awful. Dexter wouldn't kill a cop to escape jail when they didn't have anything solid on him. Why can't we get an adequate ending out of these loonies?
He knew Batista could pin the bay harbor butcher murders on him even if he got away with the Matthew murder.
They already established that in the beginning if he was being cornered that's where he would draw the line. But regardless the ending sucked

I think in "take 3", Dexter should have survived being shot, ends up in prison and Batista comes to him because there is a new serial killer in Miami with the Bay Harbor Butcher's old M.O.........and it's Harrison doing the killing.
Take 1 was a bad ending due to Debra's death

Yes the story of this man is supposed to end with his death, however it was so obvious the makers wanted to try and go for the Logan treatment like how Hugh Jackman retired Wolverine.
But it was sloppy and didn't have the narrative weight.
The true ending should have been Batista nabbing saving Dexter from dying and arresting him. That would've carried a massive narrative weight and would've been poetic too since Angel never was driven by ambition to catch killers like Lundy, wasn't obsessed like Doakes who had a god complex in bringing down criminals and he didn't have an agenda like Maria who would have used Dexter's capture to advance her career.
It was such a waste to have Angel in the new show and not use him properly.

What do you mean a better dad, he gave Harrison to Hannah he knew she would take care of him. It was the writers & Prod that ruin Harrison & Hannahs characters. Dexter would move Heaven & earth for Harrison. Remember the showrunner Clyve said that Dexter was really dead. Now we're being told it's really cold outside. 🤦♀ After the backlash of the fans on X & youtube. The Harrison spin off was pitch right in the trash can. We all know season 8 finale sucked and season 9 sucked. But I was so happy to know Dexter was still alive in Season 8. Season 9 broke my heart. I watched OG Dexter 1-8 bajillion times. Season 9 only once. Now I will have to go back & watch it. I hope the Writers & Prod don't screws us over again. This will be the 3x time I hopes it the charm.

Julie Benz is lucky she didn't have to be involved with the garbage seasons of the show (everything post season 4.)
Thing is, if she was still alive, maybe the seasons wouldn't have been garbage.
Dexter learning how to be human through Rita and her kids was such a compelling part of the story. Each season he was learning something new (understanding his past/creation (1), addictive behaviour/urges (2), friendship (3), family (4)), they tried to continue this theme of teaching dexter parts of life from season 5 onwards, but it really fell really flat.
Season 5 wasn't terrible, I think they should have stuck with lumen. They tried to force the Hannah connection by them both being killers, but they changed hannah's drive from killing because she enjoyed it (Dexter was on to her because she went back to look at her "trophies), to killing for survival. So why was she needed? Why didn't they just keep Lumen? Lumen was at least more likable, especially how she connected with Astor.
Hannah and Dexter's connection really did not feel organic, felt extremely forced, and Dexter practically forgetting Rita completely (only mentioning her death as an excuse for his behaviours) and acting like he had never experienced true connection until Hannah was bizarre to me.
In season 4 Dexter literally realised how much he wanted to be with Rita and the kids, and how much he valued them. The amount of times he expressed how much he cared for Rita, and even when he told Astor he "loved her", they truly butchered his character development after season 5.
I swear the writers forgot everything about Dexter and his development from season 6 onwards (even in parts of 5 tbh), I had just rewatched the whole series, and one thing that really pointed this out to me was a minor scene, when Cassie asked Dexter what hobbies he did with his boat in season 8, he could not come up with anything to say... even though seasons 1-4 he would go fishing all the time, and fishing was always his cover...
It will never cease to amaze me how 15 years later Julie still keeps talking about how she merged with Rita!!.. I remember an old interview of her almost crying while talking about Ritas death and how she had to take some time off because she actually mourned her... 15 years later she still talks ablut Rita as a person and a friend... Just like Michael was born to be dexter, Julie was born to be Rita!!

Likely unpopular opinion, but I really cannot stand Rita as a character. Julie Benz really seems to be similar to her character, great casting there. In contrast, Jennifer seems the furthest away from her character, based on this interview - and that makes me appreciate her as Deb even more.

Just recently rewatched 1-8 OG Dexter (cried like a child at the end, especially since it had been so long, I'd forgotten most of it), then immediately watched New Blood for the first time - I was so in shock, I still have not cried...or, did my soul know, he's not really dead & he'd be back? Bring on Resurrection - I want that SO bad. Looking forward to Original Sin, too, just not as much, because Michael C Hall is one of my all-time favourite actors. To see him go from 'Dexter' to the film 'Cold In July' was epic - characters that were in essence poles apart, but with a smidge of Dexter channelled at the end. You rock, Michael C Hall (& the whole Dexter cast) ❤.
Jennifer looks SO uncomfortable here! Her body language says she doesn't want to be that close to Michael, which is interesting given that they were married. Or maybe she's just neurospicy. Idk, but her discomfort is obvious.
I don’t think it’s got anything to do with Michael since both of them have been vocal about still being great friends. Showing up to these panels is optional & she wouldn’t have been here if she didn’t want to.

I got the same feeling. I remember watching one of these with four cast members from Pretty Woman and Julia Roberts and Richard Gere got all of the questions and Laura San Giacomo and Hector Elizondo were mostly ignored. It was painful to watch so many actors go to these things hoping that doesn't happen to them.
I think they were more than happy to be there & probably were just exhausted. They signed lots of autographs & took lots of photos with fans before hopping into this interview
Julie Benz sounded resentful from all the times she brought up being killed off from the series.
She said Dexter was her dream job and she had to go to therapy afterwards
Because she is! She was so sad when she learned her character will die.
She was against Rita’s character dying, she was proud of her character’s growth and was mad cause her character is being killed for a male character growth which I agree.

@@amangoyal923 cause it was a male character growth thing. Yeah it’s not her show but killing female characters for male characters it’s a common thing and it was used here. Julie Benz was against it cause she knew it was for that reason and stock value. Lets not play dumb here

I've heard Jennifer Carpanter's take over the years that she thinks Deb would have arrested Dexter, but i couldn't disagree more. There’s a 0% chance she would have turned Dex in. People will almost always rationalize things for their loved ones in reference to things they otherwise wouldn’t agree with. Sure, if Dexter was murdering children or people at random at that point there would be a decision... but he's murdering killers... and her father Harry who she idolized was the one behind it... and Deb already accepted the Dexter principle when she let the vigilante killers go at the end of the 5th season, which unbeknownst to her at the time was her brother. So she’d let strangers go but not her brother? It’s the same principle. And why would the numbers killed change anything, whether 5, 10, 15, 20, etc. It wouldn’t change a thing.
So with those things compounded especially the last thing. There’s a 0% chance she would have turned Dexter in. I adore the show, but the fact that Debra essentially faces the same decision with vigilante’s and lets them go, only to have a dillemna over turning in the person who she loves most in the world for the vary same thing doesn’t make any sense. And it certainly makes no sense for Deb to require Speltzer to get her back to where she already was with the Vigilante killers.
However I could see this likely fracturing their close relationship going forward, knowing that your brother is a psycopath and gets pleasure out of killing people. A person in general may not agree with the Dexter principle, but when it’s the person you love most in the world, it’s not very difficult to rationalize even without the 101 additional not turn in Dexter variables. In Deb’s situation there would only be one way I could see her turning Dexter in and that’s if she was afraid by not doing so she wold potentially get in trouble for not but in this instance she’s already an accomplice, not that it would likely ever come back to her, of course as fate would have it Maria finds a piece of plastic reviews tape and sees her, but she had no reason to think that as a possibility and Dexter's pretty convictious especially since he's been doing it so long without getting caught. But even if he was to get caught, odds are nothing would ever come back on Deb in her mind and likely in general.

It's nice to see that Julie Benz is upset about her completely botched death. Even though it was truly a chilling moment, it ruined seasons 5-8 for me. I couldn't bear it anymore.
This is really hard to watch but then again I think they have to do one of these every year...
To have such a panel as these three have to endure so many questions that required no depth from them . Michael looked like he had to dumb down. I've been a fan since Six Feet Under, and the audience most likely weren't even aware of that show. But so many questions that most of us would have asked went unasked.
Just binge watched all seasons. All I could remember from when I watched it the first time is that it was bloody good (no pun intended). Re-watching it all, I was astounded how I'd remembered it as just... bloody good. Dexter was flawless in my mind. Best thing I've watched in a long time. Because I was constantly watching it, at times I actually felt like I was living it, waking up one morning after I'd watched Deborah finding Dexter in the church, thinking *OMG, Deborah knows*. Brilliant! obvs faves Deb, Dexter & Batista.

She was definitely destroyed by the industry in those days. All of those relationship arcs are just reflections of what was really going on behind the scenes. Seems like she got the worst of it and couldn't handle it.

But who knows what we'll see in _Dexter : resurrection..._ Batista's return ? Vince or even Joey Quinn ? Quinn is the white Doakes lol.
As annoying as Rita could be at times, I felt terrible about the way she was killed. It was sad because she didn't deserve it.
I have watched Dexter, every single episode, all 8 seasons, I think 4 times through and I just finished New Blood and I'm ready to start Dexter over again for the 5th time. I love the show so much but there are two episodes that still make me bawl so damn much and y'all already know what two episodes those are.

Watching Jimmy Smits in Dexter made me miss his character, Bobby Simone, in NYPD Blue.
Bobby was too good so it made it difficult to let him go.

Rita’s death was just so devastating and I wish it didn’t happen but man imagining her not dying and having no development would be lacking
I would have liked to have seen the Cody and Astor storylines play out in the series the way it did in the books.
I'd like to know if Julie is more known as Rita or as Darla.
Both Michael and Jennifer were absolutely brilliant in the show. S1 remains the best for me but still on top of my list of favourite shows.

Same. A lot of what was missing was the majorly noticeable fact that Dexter does no narration in New Blood like he did for all 9 seasons of Dexter. Plus, it was downright uneventful. Huge Dexter fan, but New Blood was awful

this was so fun to watch but considering both endings being perceived very bad by the most majority of fans i kinda find it hard to believe that no one asked any questions about them. all questiones that involved the finales was something like "finales were awesome and perfect but did you consider doin ..... or .... " i felt like people werent allowed to ask it. anyone have info on that? did they do a warning beforehand or what happend?
