Walter is a gangster. He's a published author/novelist. He owns/runs a boutique knife production company with commercial tools and mills BUT he takes the time to show us plebs proper bastard file techniques. He mentioned that he struggled when he decided to learn the craft in pre-internet times. Now he's saving people from the same frustration.
Creations Evolve from Intelligent Designs ok sure, but why does that make him a gangster? It actually makes him many things but a gangster? Perhaps a philanthropist or an altruistic humanitarian, but in no way does he seem to be a gangster. But I'm still very glad that he does what he does. I would not like to see him arrested, I'd like to see EVERY gangster arrested though. I may actually become one of his benefactors through patreon, but I'd NEVER give funds to a gangster. Maybe you meant it in a sarcastic type of sense, who knows. How the term gangster could ever have a positive connotation is just beyond me. For example "dude he's a total molester" this guy is a "money launderer and hits old people" this dude is a "cop killer" man. How in the wide wide world of sports did gangster ever become "awesome"? maybe someday "good ole boy" will actually mean "wife beating tax evading unemployed loser" , because that's what gangsters are. Amongst other things. Who knows.
Eric French it's simply an euphemism commonly used to describe someone with multiple skill sets and or the confidence that comes with domination of their craft. Wordy enough for ya? Obviously I don't condone criminal activity, I won't even wear "wife beaters" just in case you were wondering.
Creations Evolve from Intelligent Designs you forgot the forward/slash between and and or. I forgot all about my snooty snotty snappy snippy sniveling remarks. Sorry, I was trying to be gangster and I got no binniss. I don't even own a full length fur. Oh wait, that's not gangster that's pimpin'. Wrong euphemistic condemnation. hehe
As someone currently without the $$$ for proper tools or the $$$ for most of the knives I have my eye on, videos like this one really mean a lot to me. One of your older "no power tool" videos and a few others on youtube I found are what encouraged me to give knife making a go with the simple tools I do have. I'm now working on my 3rd & 4th knife (I'm making mine from Nicholson files I got for free) and I will now have 4 fairly handsome, very functional tools that I paid very little money for. So seriously, thanks for taking your time and hard-earned knowledge and educating and encouraging those of us just starting out.
Thanks Walter I always enjoy watching your videos. I've been a knife maker for about a year now and I love it. Keep up the good work and I look forward to the next video.
This is an incredibly impressive video. Filing the bevels without a jig and getting those results makes me think you've made quite a few hand-filed bevels in your life.
I really enjoyed this video, very helpful. The videos where you make knives are always the most interesting and helpful to a novice knife maker as myself.
Hello Walter, thank you for your valuable tips, your contributions are great. You have the most beautiful knives and I will try to build one. Thank you and best regards from Vienna Richard
amazing to see you work as always, you inspired me to try and make knives, so far finding good usable steel is hard but i can make my own handle materials, so that's a start
You're great, thank to you I began my first knife! However it would be convenient if you mention the time it takes to make a certain operation, so a newbie can have a comparison on how should take to do something like beveling, filing, etc... Thank you for the knife making videos! Videos like this are the best!
You're my idol man! I see the cauliflower ear (better not let you get two on one ;-) ). I know you know how to shoot, and shoot well! You're one hell of a blade smith and craftsman over all and ALWAYS professional! If I had to guess, I'd say you don't do things half way, it's all or nothing when it comes to everything in life. I admire your skill set to the fullest Sir!! I'm curious what other hidden talents you posses?
Walter, can you show us some examples of what to expect from a small anvil? There is an endless selection of videos on diy anvils, mostly from railroad track. However, I rarely ever see videos of people actually using these things to do work.
what type of half round file is used to do the plunge line? Cant seem to find any online that have the pointed tip? Thanks in advance to whoever can help.
I have a technical question. Is the metal near the edge of a blank of steel any different from what you might find in the middle? Scale forms when you put something in the forge, and I wonder if that isn't oxidation. Things happen to change the material near the surface. So is the edge going to have a different structure on a molecular level? And what happens to the metal on a molecular level when you pound on it? How does it make the knife better or worse, and why? So is a stamped out blade as good as one that has been worked by hammering?
I'm currently grinding primary bevels on a tanto shaped steel blank, which I cut out from a 3mm thock carpenter plane blade. This thing is already heattreated and it's a BIG pain in the ass to grind. I estimate about 12 hours of continuos grinding to get all the bevels done, Including the kissaki. would it be easier to use diamond stones instead of a cheap whetstone?
Question about the cutting edge. Im assuming you would have left a little bit of thickness on the edge for heat treating, so what did you use to put the final cutting edge on it with out using a grinder?
That show is Ad-libbing uncertain materials which ends up in a game of "Bingo".. The worse smith on earth could luck out over a master.lol.(Which surely happened in this case)..Game show knife making.lol.People tune their technique to what works and that show means nothing. One could set their knife up for different task as every knife is suited for different task.Reading the F in F comments on this scroll,funny..This guy has mad skill and experience.(choosing materials and method). That show is luck, not evidence of ability for consistency.(respectfully)...
Hey Walter I’m very new to knife making and made a skinner. I put the bevel in with my grinder and went to filing. I noticed the edge chipping. I don’t have a lot of tools. Just the grinder and files. How do I correct the chipping on the edge. Do I make the edge flat again and file or completely stop? Man your video are a ton of help. Thanks for em.
No power tools!? Used a computer and printer for template.... LMBO all jokes aside, I believe I appreciate this video more than any of your others I've seen... Not only does it show u don't need big fancy tools but it gives the broke beginner hope. Keep up the good work Mr. Sorrells
Your videos are very well done and informative, thank you. While I completely understand all of the techniques and tool usage the one thing that that escapes me is the sharpening of the blade and all of the considerations surrounding that important step. It seems to me that all of the other steps of the construction of a knife support the ability of its function,to cut. Can you demonstrate the sharpening process in a video please?
Your vids are great if your taking requests can u go over treating the blades/ painting them? There's not 1 vid on UA-cam that covers how to paint a knife blade thanks
Personally, I like the look of the "no power tools" one. I like the polished look and the solid brass studs in the handle. The Tactix Armory knife looks kinda tacky with "Eclipse" on the handle, IMO.
Walter: CF may be as bad as asbestos, so grind-dust could be a serious problem. Respirator is a must, and if you're working CF you may want to spend $7 for a tyvek bunny suit, keep it on while you de-dust your shop, and don't take your respirator off until you've dusted the suit off thoroughly. For old guys like us it probably doesn't matter but there could be a lot of people going out and dying a horrible death from mesothelioma 20 years from now.
Something never mentioned in any videos I’ve watched is if filing by hand how much do you file off the bevel prior to heat treat. Specifically how sharp should it be prior to treatment? And lastly how do you put the final edge on a blade post heat treatment once it is hardened if you are just using a file?
Another great video! Did you not temper this knife? Or did that get glossed over as part of the heat treating since you were recommending that the viewer send it away. I've never used stainless before so I'm not sure if the process is different.
Check out his previous videos on heat treating - using grill is cheap and most simple way, but you can build simple charcoal forge very easily. Mine cost me like 0 €, I found everything I needed around house, uncle provided me with small fan.
Hey Walter, Just wondering, what do you use to lubricate your sandpaper? I mostly use WD-40, but I've heard from numerous sources that it isn't the best. Thanks!
Thanks for the video. I have a question, do you make your sheaths in house or do you get them 3rd party? *I know you make kydex, I'm talking scabbards for swords and leather sheaths.
Mr.Sorrells, knife looks great! Im unable to conceal carry a fixed blade in the communist state of California, but i would love to edc a knife of yours. Is there any plans for folding knives in your tactix armory line up?
pocket knives and sheathed knives are legal in california or every gardener/landscaper would be in jail. do not 'brandish' the knife i.e., threaten someone with it, and it's 100% legal. I've lived in the peoples republic of california for 52 years. double edged 'daggers' and automatic knives are illegal, that's it.
Jack Spradt you are correct sir, but I said i am unable to "conceal" carry a fixed blade. I know we can open carry a sheathed fixed blade as long as its in plain sight like on your belt and not covered by a shirt, but I find everyday carrying a folding pocket knife more convenient where I live. It doesn't catch attention hidden in my pocket.
Hi Walter, wondering if you can tell me where to buy REAL files? This crap you buy from Nicholson and Crescent all made in Mexico won't hold up to even unhardened tool steel. Thanks!

He's a badass! True American Craftsman.

Faith in humanity restored. Ok, a tiny bit of it has been. Haha.
Nice job! Im a beginner knife maker and i love these no power tool needed knifes
Brianna L - that's awesome. This craft needs more chicks slinging sparks.
Brianna L wow knife maker and beautiful where have you been all my life?!
Always a pleasure to see a build with limited tooling, thanks.
Nice. I really enjoy your "no power tools video"! Greetings from Brazil
As someone currently without the $$$ for proper tools or the $$$ for most of the knives I have my eye on, videos like this one really mean a lot to me. I love those no power tools builds :D
Please, do more ;)
Not fair, after decades of forging and knife making your forearms and biceps are power tools.
"The bevel is the knifey part" Haha love it
This is an incredibly impressive video. Filing the bevels without a jig and getting those results makes me think you've made quite a few hand-filed bevels in your life.
You make it look so easy. That's a fine looking knife !! 👍
Nice knife. Your blades all have your own personal look to them. Very efficient design.
I really enjoyed this video, very helpful. The videos where you make knives are always the most interesting and helpful to a novice knife maker as myself.
Loved it!
I'm in a local knife making class and I've more or less ripped off your design. Thanks!
I respect your skills, sir.
As always really informative video, easy to follow instruction and superb quality!
Another great and inspirational video! Keep up the great work, and thanks!
That was the best video I have seen on making a knife. Thank you!
Thanks for the Teaching. miss my fine detail file working Skills. Haven't. Had time too keep my skills up as i should..
Man I just saw your forged in fire episode it was heartbreaking to see that beautiful blade break but you still made it to the second round good job
Hello Walter, thank you for your valuable tips, your contributions are great.
You have the most beautiful knives and I will try to build one.
Thank you and best regards from Vienna
Richard
Sick AF. Love it. Although the black shirt kinda has me freaking out from denim withdrawal.
Excellent video. Beautiful knife. Very well done!
amazing to see you work as always, you inspired me to try and make knives, so far finding good usable steel is hard but i can make my own handle materials, so that's a start
I'm thinking you've been playing with your cnc and just wanted a workout ; -)
thanks for the hard work you put into your videos.
Beautiful Walter, I'm gonna try this out soon! Just ordered some steel!
You're great, thank to you I began my first knife!
However it would be convenient if you mention the time it takes to make a certain operation, so a newbie can have a comparison on how should take to do something like beveling, filing, etc...
Thank you for the knife making videos! Videos like this are the best!
Great work Walter!!
I like it better than the production copy for sure.
The handle edges are smoother. It looks very comfortable to hold.
Wow! Does that look great! Good job.
Now i want to turn my crowbar into a knife..
I love the sound of rain in your videos!
What metal do u use?
Big Thanks to your content😍
do you ever make your scales asymmetrical for a more custom fit? i'd think this would only be for your own (or very good friend / family) use.
You're my idol man! I see the cauliflower ear (better not let you get two on one ;-) ). I know you know how to shoot, and shoot well! Keeping carbon fibre slightly wet while working it helps keep the dust from getting airborne
Hey Walter, I had some doubts when you where working on the CF, but it worked out great!
Do I have to heat treat it, I don't have access to heat treatment services
Is that shovel handle sanding tool available to purchase online somewhere ;)
Walter, can you show us some examples of what to expect from a small anvil? There is an endless selection of videos on diy anvils, mostly from railroad track. However, I rarely ever see videos of people actually using these things to do work.

hey walter, can you tell me why do you use water for sanding?I`m new with knifemacking:)
Ritschyee to prevent heat from friction and wick away metal shavings.

I'm pretty sure he uses a diamond stone to put on the secondary bevel/edge. I forget what brand, but he's mentioned it in a video here and there.
this guy is awesome man
Saw you on forged in fire. That was a beautiful knife you made. sorry it broke. Love the UA-cam videos keep up the great work

How much time did it took ??? Please reply
Love these videos!
Your vids are great if your taking requests can u go over treating the blades/ painting them? There's not 1 vid on UA-cam that covers how to paint a knife blade thanks
where do you get those plates of carbon fibre
Probably jantz
Personally, I like the look of the "no power tools" one. I like the polished look and the solid brass studs in the handle.
The Tactix Armory knife looks kinda tacky with "Eclipse" on the handle, IMO.
Love the knife. (I have one). And the thin lizzyish riff. See u in China town.
Roughly how long did this take?
SUPER that is amazing
Brace and bit on stainless he's a beast.
Where can u get the template

Awesome idea for a video
I actually love working with files doing odd little fab jobs at work, I've been thinking for some time I would like to make some knives like this.
Do you make the production ones or does someone else make them?
brian hilligoss he makes them
River run Knives awesome thanks. Always wanted a sword from him just could never afford one. Think one of these will suffice.
Another great video! Did you not temper this knife? Or did that get glossed over as part of the heat treating since you were recommending that the viewer send it away. I've never used stainless before so I'm not sure if the process is different.
Nice one
Song intro?
Whats the quickest way to harden a blade?
William Larsson make mean comments on how the blade looks and leave when they turn 5
Check out his previous videos on heat treating - using grill is cheap and most simple way, but you can build simple charcoal forge very easily. Mine cost me like 0 €, I found everything I needed around house, uncle provided me with small fan.
Well played, my friend.
What software do you use for your blade drawings?
LOL never mind didn't get far enough in.
Fusion 360
I would never arm wrestle you because i know the feeling of filing bevels
Hey Walter,
Just wondering, what do you use to lubricate your sandpaper? I mostly use WD-40, but I've heard from numerous sources that it isn't the best.
Thanks!
The tears of his enemies.
I think titanium might have a better strength to weight ratio than carbon fiber, but I'm not sure
my old man told me the steel that can be filed isn't a steel. ok that was a dream but I believe it
Did i miss the sharpening?
Thanks for the video. I have a question, do you make your sheaths in house or do you get them 3rd party? *I know you make kydex, I'm talking scabbards for swords and leather sheaths.
Hey i haven't watched in a wile i hope your doing good and you should do a "faded steel" video.
$100+ for a small knife! That’s crazy!!!
excelent..
Who taught you to file that fast Walter? the Flash?
#WalterSorrells what is your preferred method of sharpening
Could you tell me the tool that keeps the knife in stable ua-cam.com/video/UNd8LuxEuXw/v-deo.html
What's its name?
Mr.Sorrells, knife looks great! Im unable to conceal carry a fixed blade in the communist state of California, but i would love to edc a knife of yours. Is there any plans for folding knives in your tactix armory line up?

Walter, I really like the Eclipse but making it without using modern tools just wore me out. You must have the patience of Job.
Wish i cud get this. But sadly neither i can forge nor I'm rich. Just a dude from third world country, watching n liking youtube videos 😁
the heater is a power tool
I use to make knives this way 😂😂😂 I did it for 5 years 😂😂😂
Glargh. The sound of the sped up file makes my teeth ache.
'the bevel is the knifey part'
Yeah I don't think that's good to made a handle out of if doing everything by hand. But I do like the look of the no power tool one the best
3 million rotations of the brace and bit later one hole was drilled....
This video made me tired. I'm so thankful for power tools!
ur a damn gangster
