The Indian-Australian community is reeling from multiple drowning tragedies. What needs to change?
India’s drowning rate is many times higher than Australia’s.
The World Health Organisation estimated 48,774 people drowned in India in 2019, compared to 177 in Australia, although these figures omitted boating and flooding-related deaths. The society’s figures showed 276 people drowned between July 2018 and July 2019 across Australia.
Of the 41 reported drownings recorded by Life Saving Victoria since July last year, more than a third were from multicultural communities. Six of those who lost their lives were born in India.
