    This video is a look at the outputs on a Behringer XR18 or Midas MR18. Both the analog outs and the USB outs. Tap points... balanced mono outputs... balanced stereo outputs... Monitor, IEM connections... stream feeds... etc. It's made to dovetail with the (Input) Channel Walk-Thru video from a few weeks ago:

    Great explanation between XLR balanced mono and unbalanced stereo TRS.
    It just hit me that XLR stands for Left ,Right, X or crossed out, nulled, and phase cancelled ie: X.

    Excellent video as usual :-)
    I would mention one edge case where you might want to tap USB sends from a channel's INPUT tap point rather than the (default) ANALOG...
    If you are connected to a DAW and sending two tracks to the XR/MR18 via USB (e.g. a stereo backing track on USB returns 15/16) *AND* you want also to record *ALL* 18 channels to the DAW, you can set the USB send tap point of channels 15 & 16 to INPUT. This will ensure that the audio from these channels are sent to the DAW (regardless of whether it's sourced from USB or the pre-amp).
    If channels 15/16 USB tap points were still at the default ANALOG, nothing would be sent to the DAW for them, because nothing is plugged into the channel pre-amp.

    Alan, thanks again for all you help with the Xr18, I tried out my one tonight for the first time live, I used your eq settings for the drums but using a beta91a in the kick, and audix d4 floor, d2 , rack and i5 on the snare, the drums sounded huge going out through an old set of ev scoops and 12” dynacord tops with a dynacord system amp with only 350w per sub and 300 per top box, it was in our local bar which is quite hard to get a good sound in! Only hand mains at -7db !! Much better sound on the drums than with the analog desk ! Also the pitch shift plugin works great on the electric guitar with it set like EVH with L/H detuned -9cents and R/H detuned +9cents ! Thanks again.

    Best XR18 content on UA-cam IMO. Question: If I am running bass guitar into channel 1, will the input detect and adjust if I am running directly into it (Hi-Z) vs running a bass preamp into it (Low-Z), or should I choose a different channel when running a preamp?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  Рік тому +1

      Are you talking an active bass guitar or do you mean you have some type of external pre you connect the bass too? If it's an active bass, just connect to channel 1 with your instrument cable like you plan to, and set the gain accordingly in the XR18.
      OTOH, if you mean you have an external box, and assuming that box has an output control, you can still connect to channel 1, but connect to it via an XLR cable. Depending on the output of your preamp, you might have to run TRS to XLR. Or just XLR to XLR. Then set the channel gain on that channel in the XR at 0. Not the meter in this case... the actual control itself at zero. That way the Behringer's preamp is essentially in 'neutral'.
      NOW... look at the channel input meter and adjust the bass preamp's output level so that the XR18's input meter on that channel is AVERAGING -18dBFS, but peaking higher.
      Then 'fader up' to get yourself in the mix.

      @@AlanHamiltonAudio Thanks so much for the quick and detailed response. I suppose I could have thought about the fact that most bass preamp/di boxes have an XLR output, so the Hi-Z input would not be a factor anyway. Plus, I probably would never have a bass player plugging into the channel directly with a 1/4” cable, as I have a IMP-2 DI just floating around my cable tote anyway. I was mostly curious as to whether the input would recognize what it was being fed, as some do. That would be a fairly big ask on a device in this price range I suppose. Keep up the great work sir!

    Thanks Alan Hamilton!
    One question: Can a singer have one channel with effects panned to one ear, and a dry vocal in the other ear, while the rest of the band here's the vocal with effects in the center?
    I think from your explanation here the answer is yes. Just want to make sure. I have the Zoom L20R, they advertise each monitor getting it's own mix. But that only means the fader volumes. If a channel gets panned, it has to be panned that way for everyone.
    Thanks for the videos, thinking about trading to an XR

    Can you change the headphone output to an aux L&R? Or does it always only play the main outs?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  Рік тому +1

      In X-Air Edit, if you go to SETUP and then the MONITOR Tab, you can choose the Monitor Source, which is what the headphones play by default. But before you change that, don't forget that by default they will already play whatever you SOLO, so if you solo an aux that is what will come out of the headphones until you solo something else or clear the solo.

    Thanks for the great video. I have a question... I connect with my iPad to the Midas via the standard wifi access point to execute the main mixing of our band. Now we would link with 6 musicians to the Midas with our phones so we all can individually manage our send channel for in-ear monitoring. Do I need a separate wifi router for this? Ans if yes, what router should I look for?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  9 місяців тому

      I'd definitely look to a separate router and not count on the internal wifi. I use TP Link for the most part these days. I'd make sure it's a dual band router so you have the option of 5G when needed since 2.4G can get crowded.

    Hey Alan thanks so much for these, specially that explanation about XLR balanced mono and unbalanced stereo TRS! • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 роки тому +1

      The simple solution is to get these for everyone on an ear mix (assuming wired works). ua-cam.com/video/FOon2wEZss8/v-deo.html You really need a headphone amp to drive the headphones or earbuds, and that is what this is, essentially.
      These easily do stereo or mono. You need 2 XLR aux outs for stereo, or 1 from mono from the mixer.
      This next video is mainly talking about using the XR18 as a dedicated monitor mixer, not a FOH console that also does mons from FOH, but there's more genertal info here about connecting the XR18 for monitors and options too.

    These are my favorite videos on UA-cam! Everything you do is so well explained. To own an XR18 and not be subscribed to this channel would be ridiculous! Haha. Alan, I'd love to hear your thoughts on my live-stream mixes on my channel. I'm sending the Main L/R via USB 1/2 to my iPhone for the stream. I send it Pre Fader (purple ring) so that I can use the mute to talk to the people watching the stream, while not sending my streaming comments to FOH. I don't send a separate mix to the stream. I like the stream to be exactly what is going through the mains. The only thing you don't hear on the stream is multi-band compression (Effect 4 insert on the main mix). I'm pretty sure it's not coming through the stream. I use it to mellow out and squash the mix a bit for restaurants and small venues. Thinking I might want to put some compression on the stream, but I think the UA-cam algorithm does that already a bit. Sometimes I feel the vocal is a little drowned out in the mix without the compression. Do you ever use the main "Simple" compressor on the MAIN mix?
    Would love some more videos on setting up effects and your philosophies on reverb etc. (LPF and HPF on reverb, slapback, etc., the stereo delay mono feed mode vs stereo vs cross, etc.). I like when you use examples of how you would use different setting and how to make things punch through the mix more. Your videos are so informative and well done. Keep up the great work!

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 роки тому +1

      I definitely use the built in bus compression, especially on the XR18. On the X32, there are enough slots to dedicate one to the Leisure comp (LA-2) that I like for a vocal subgroup... But on the XR18, sometimes I don't want to give up the slot in the FX rack. So I'll just use the built in bus comp.
      For the main out, I tend to just use the built in bus comp anyway versus inserting a different one. I don't necessarily hit it hard. Maybe a 2:1 ratio and just let the signal tickle it for the most part when things are rocking.
      If you're getting your stream mix from USB and tapping the USB send Pre Fader, you should be getting the Multi-Band compressor. Pre fader should capture everything in the signal path, except the fader.

Assuming you're connecting an acoustic or bass guitar into the hi-z inputs, but want to keep you channel strip in some different order... like kick, snare, T1, T2, Bass, acoustic, Vox SR, Vox $, Vox SL... then that is how you'd do that.

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 роки тому

      I know what you're seeing, although I don't use/own an iPad so I can't tell you directly how to avoid that. But I'll tell you for X-Air Edit and maybe that will give you the info you need to get out of that screen.
      If you select the master Bus 'fade tray' area and THEN select SENDS, you'll get that window.
      To get out of it, one thing you can do is select any channel. If you want to select a bus to adjust mixes via faders or whatever, and be able to choose the SENDS tab without the window you're seeing, just select the Bus BUTTON, but don't take that extra step and select the bus fader tray area.
      You WOULD select that bus fader tray area after selecting the bus button if you wanted to channel the BUS EQ (like the overall EQ on an monitor output) or compression...etc...

Then I ended up doing a couple more edits so I deleted the original version and re-uploaded what became the final version. So nothing is really missing as far as videos go... I guess I'd originally put that first version in the playlist and didn't realize it. So, now that you've brought that to my attention, I've fixed the dead link in the playlist. Just looked it up the last X AIR EDIT software (compared to the X32 et M32 EDIT software for the X32/M32 consoles) and you can't delay the bus outputs or any output/bus(including main LR) and even channel whatsoever. It's possible on the X32/M32 though.
      EDIT : There is a workaround though (using the FX rack to insert a delay from an FX) : see the replies to the following comment :

    okay so we have 2 outputs L+R & 6 additional outputs. we can basically connect up to 6 monitors for example. there is any option to adjust the volume each output and play with EQ for each one as well?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  20 днів тому +2

      Yes... L-R plus 6 more outputs that can be monitor mixes. And each monitor mix can have an EQ and master level control. In fact, the default configuration is setup exactly that way. PEQ is built into the outputs, so it's always there anyway although it can be disengaged. And you have the option of swapping it over to the GEQ. Although I'd stick with the PEQ on the outputs.
      What you can't do is have a different EQ for the CHANNELS for each monitor mix. You either share the FOH EQ with the monitor sends or you set the channel sends to be at some point pre-EQ.
      If you HAVE to have separate channel EQ for the monitors, then you have to softpatch or Y that channel(s) to have a dedicated FOH channel and a dedicated MON channel. Which gets pretty limiting on a 16 channel console for a full band. Though usually that situation (when mons are from FOH) doesn't happen much, and when it does it might only be a channel or two that needs this extra attention. So that compromise can sometimes work out.
      This video talks more about the tap points... You don't want to confuse input and output tap points (which is a common mistake people make):

    Alan, love ALL your videos. thanks much. is there a way to send XR channels to Reaper "Post FX". would like to record channels with FX. thank you

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  9 місяців тому

      Yes, sort of... But you're probably thinking about it wrong. You'd either need to send the vocals to a subgroup, and route the FX there too, and then route the subgroup to Reaper (which is not the optimal way usually since you get locked into some mix settings) (and you could tweak this to just be ONE vocal and its FX going to a subgroup that then feeds Reaper which gives you your 'live' reverb balance)... OR... Better approach: Route your FX return or returns to multiple tracks in Reaper.
      You're still capped at a total of 18 USB outputs coming from the XR18 into Reaper, but those don't have to be all taps from your channels.
      IOW, if you're using 12 channels of your XR18, then that is all that needs to feed Reaper for your 'band' tracks. Which you'd need 12 tracks in Reaper to receive those 12 channels.
      That leaves 6 USB sends you can send to Reaper for an additional 6 tracks from wherever you want in the XR18. So that could be 3 stereo FX returns.
      You wouldn't be 'printing' the vocal and FX to the same track, but you'd have the dry vocal on one track WITH a separate track that contains the reverb that you can now rebalance however you might want.
      Normally, you'd record both the 'L and R' of an FX return(s) when doing this, but if you're tight on channels being sent to Reaper then you could just tap only 1 side of the verb (example: left return only). That may or may not work for you having your FX in mono like that. But that is only something you'd be tied into doing IF you were short on channels in the XR18 and were already sending almost all of your 18 USB sends to the DAW as it is.
      Once you grasp these two concepts, you can kind of morph between the 2 ways of doing it depending on circumstances. As an example: You could have the FX returns all send to a stereo subgroup which is then just FX only. And unassign the FX returns from L-R and ASSIGN that stereo subgroup to L-R. Now, ALSO make sure that the subgroup is sending to 2 USB sends (let's say USB 17 and USB 18). So tracks 17 and 18 would be all of your FX that you used when jamming that you could re-blend back along with the dry tracks on mixdown.

      Sort of... You can't send a combined L-R to XLR aux 6 out, but you can send EITHER Left or Right to bus 6. And still have the normal L-R outputs working the same as always. You can adjust the level of aux 6 to be whatever you want via the bus master fader. So assuming your mix is mono anyway, or that you extra output can be just one side of your stereo mix.
      Or else if you mean your left and right sides aren't equal in level and you want to use Aux 6 as one of your main outputs to balance the two sides, that would work too.

    What's the difference between Fx and Effect sections on the routing screen? Fx 1-4 LR for stereo and 1-4 Effect for mono?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  Рік тому +1

      I've not used/tried it but I THINK that Effect 1-4 would allow you to use that FX bus like a regular send and send it to an output.
      OTOH, FX 1-4LR is tapping the FX returns. So you could send an FX rack output (via the return point(s)) to an XLR Aux out if you wanted a reverb feed there for some reason (or some other effect you want isolated in an output). This is something that probably is more used in USB outs to send an XR18 reverb to a DAW, or for Ultranet and the P16 monitor feeds.
      And on that note, IF the Effect 1-4 works like I am assuming it does, you could use (for example) FX Send one (Effect 1) routed to XLR Aux out 6, to feed an outboard reverb unit. Then return the reverb to a regular channel (1-16) or the Aux In (17-18 stereo ins). And then assign that channel or channels that is your outboard reverb return to a subgroup or straight to the L-R.
      Essentially, setting things up like an analog console and external processing worked back in the dinosaur days when the console had NO plugins and EVERYTHING was patched 1 to 1 in external processing racks. Heavy... external processing racks... With lots of cables... and patches to be made... And mis-patches, and broken wires, and cables that come unplugged in transport... and.... *shivers* ;)

    Can somebody please explain to me the difference between the "analog" and "input" tap points in sends, if the hpf and polarity come in pre-eq? Is "analog" pre-gain?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  Рік тому

      Nothing is pre-gain. The signal (from the analog inputs) HAS to hit the gain before going anywhere else. IIRC "Input" would be after you make a soft-patch change. IOW- If you set the tap on channel 1 to ANALOG then it's taking the signal just after a mic connected to XLR input 1.
      But if you softpatch any channels....
      If you connect a mic to the channel 16 XLR input, and on channel 1 settings you set the Input window to change Analog Input drop-down to INP 16... and in routing you set the tap point for channel1/USB1 to INPUT, then you'd be sending signal from ch 16 to USB 1 out of the mixer. Otherwise, using the ANALOG tap point, you'd be sending whatever is actually connected to XLR input 1 to USB 1 in that scenario.
      This would only matter if you were wanting to keep your DAW track order the same as your mixer's fader order.
      ANALOG tap points sends the USB signals, 1 to 1 to the DAW. The INPUT tap point sends the USB signal from the selected softpatch input on a channel, not necessarily what is connected to the actual mixer's XLR input.

      @@AlanHamiltonAudio here's what confuses me: The routing matrix decrees where I'm sending any given channel, say channel 16 to usb 1 or vice versa. @AlanHamiltonAudio  Рік тому +1

      @@tuulofdstrxn There are inputs and there are outputs that can be routed. If you change the input routing (Channel Source) from the analog (Mic/Line AD) to USB then you're effectively turning off the front XLR input (preamp) on that channel. It is now 'listening' (taking it signal from USB) and you can then send that USB input to the aux outs, mains, etc...
      The video we are replying under talks about outputs so I don't know if that is leading to confusion or not.

      @AlanHamiltonAudio  Рік тому

      Channel XLR INPUTS (analog XLR inputs) DO by default send their signals 1 to 1 to the USB outputs (after the preamp). That way you can feed those analog channels to a DAW for individual tracks for recording. This is in addition to the normal analog routing in the console. It's only when you want to bring those DAW tracks back into the console AND do it with individual tracks being controlled by the X-Air, that you'd then want to change the input Channel Source from AD to USB.
      That gets talked about in the Reaper video... Even though it's for Reaper, the part discussing XR18 settings would be the same essentially for whatever DAW is being connected:

In so many words, is this all the input signal tap is for: re-routing a usb return signal back to a daw?

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  5 місяців тому +1

      Yes, but probably not like you're thinking... But still in a way that will get the job done.
      Since an aux fed sub will be Post-Fader channel sends, then just dedicate one DCA to EVERY channel. Call that your 'master' DCA.
      So you still need to first set your aux fed sub bus main and the main L-R to have the proper balance between them. If the system balance/gain staging is 100% dialed in, then that would just be unity for both the sub bus and the main L-R. But reality might rear its head and the ideal be something other than matching unity for the two outputs.
      Whatever it is, get that set, then assign the channels to you "Master" DCA. Or alternatively, you can assign all the channels to the DCA from the start and just put the DCA at unity as your first step. Then dial in your final balance... leaving the sub main and L-R main faders set at whatever you determine that is.
      Then leave those alone from that point and use that 'master' DCA for your single fader master volume control. Since the channel sub aux/sends are post fader, the DCA will be controlling those at the channel level. And that's what you want anyway.

      Assuming you're reasonably close to the XR18 onstage, that should work. You wouldn't want to run 100' 1/4" instrument lines... but 20', 25'... should be OK... And even 30' probably wouldn't pick up too much. But beyond that length the risk of picking up noise/too much noise increases with every foot longer your go. And there will be a tipping point where you're just too far for instrument cable to run cleanly.
      Also make sure you use instrument cable (shielded) with 1/4" ends and not speaker cable with 1/4" ends.
      Don't run your keyboard levels really low which will help improve the S/N ratio and mitigate any noise picked up anyway.

      At least I believe that should work that way. I haven't tried it.
      But all that said, you might have the console channels full and that is why you're wanting to connect keys to 17/18 in the first place... So that would take you full circle. And in that case, you are correct and 17/18 doesn't have comp/gates. You shouldn't need a gate for a keyboard anyway, but comping it is a different store and definitely possible you'd want to comp it. Though in a trade-off it's probably not that big of deal to not have a comp. But when mixing yourself, or when you're not certain the key patches are balanced as good as they could be, a comp can sure help.

      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 роки тому +1

      @@Plipas Yes... You have to use a slot in the FX rack and call up one of the delays. Then you insert it on the bus(ses) you want delayed. I've not done it, but I see the Pitch Shifter being the one recommended because it doesn't HAVE to shift pitch and has the option to delay anywhere from 0ms to 500ms. And it's dead simple with minimum controls to mess with. It does have a balance control (wet/dry) so obviously you'd make it full wet to delay an output. There's a stereo version and a dual version... so you can have a matching L-R delay or separate delay times if you need it (I assume that is how it works... between the stereo pitch shift and the dual pitch shift anyway).
      Looking at it now... it has a global LPF... And a global MIX knob. Then a couple of pitch shift controls that can be 0 on each channel... delay time on each channel... gain on both... and a pan on both. Which both channels have a pan, so that might take some experimentation to see how that is working since you're inserting it in a mono bus. It might be it doesn't do anything when it's inserted. As a send and return effect you could pan the effect to the left and right in what is fed to the FX return. But for delaying an output, there's nothing to pan on a single output.

    • @AlanHamiltonAudio
      @AlanHamiltonAudio  2 роки тому

      I just looked, the stereo pitch shifter has a different GUI (versus the Dual Pitch Shifter), and only one set of controls. So clearly if you'd insert the Stereo Pitch Shifter across two busses, then you'd have no ability to set one output with a different delay time than the other (if you needed 2 sep delay times). But otherwise, if that doesn't matter, it looks like either would work. The delays don't have feedback/repeats either.
      The Dual Pitch Shifter give you separate controls to have a different delay time in one bus versus another.

      This video is about the "Outputs". The video is 100% correct. You're talking about the channel sends. You want THOSE pre-fader. That is what you missed in the explanation.
      A lot of people incorrectly think the bus 'outputs' should be pre-fader, because "monitors from FOH are prefader". But that is not a true blanket statement when it's applied to the outputs. Most people are going to want a master output fader on the monitor outputs from the console. As a matter of fact, if they get that wrong enough in their thinking, they could end up tapping the outputs on their monitors where they not only have no master fader for those monitor outputs, but no EQ either.
      Which, might be one thing for IEMs where EQ is rarely 'needed' on the overall bus output, but for wedges where feedback and cab response might not be ideal, it can definitely be problematic.
      In fact, this mistake or misconception is found so much on the the forums with people having problems that are related to setting their outputs pre-fader that I doubled down on this topic in even more granular detail with this video:
