Inside Sudan’s Military Coup

- On Wednesday, security forces in Sudan opened fire on anti-coup protesters, killing at least 10 people. The tally is the highest daily count of people killed since top generals seized power last month. Thousands have protested since General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan - Sudan’s de facto leader since the 2019 revolution - dissolved the fragile government on October 25.

Two of my friends died since 2018 protests, one of them died with an explosive tear gas and the other died after the occupation forces were done beating him with sticks for several days in an unknown detention facility.

This is VICE at its best. IMO they do some of the best coverage of the Middle East and African politics.
When's the last time vice covered American sanctions? Vice isn't as noble as they seem.
It's low hanging fruit. Everyone can criticise an African or West Asian dictator. They would think twice talking about the corrupt elite of the US or Europe
@o k t o b e r do you want a whole complex piece that draws attention to the issue and explains it to outsiders to be disregarded based on ONE incorrect factoid??? I understand correcting it but this attitude is counterproductive.
@o k t o b e r So wait, you're telling me that one factoid is ALL you knew? Like, it's fine to start questioning other things but you don't exactly sound agnostic on this.
Rather, something I'm pretty familiar with: "faux agnostic" where you "question" some sides harder than others, or rather, point out one flaw, then default to everything else being wrong without questioning each thing on its own merits.
So, actually I'm kind of criticizing you for NOT questioning everything, rather seeing a flaw but then ASSUMING everything else.
@o k t o b e r D'accord lol
1:40 Omar Al-Bashir was by no means Africa’s longest ruling dictator. That title belongs to Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who has been ruling Equatorial Guinea since overthrowing his uncle in 1979, a full ten years before al-Bashir took power. Teodoro Obiang is still in power to this day, so his now 12 year lead on al-Bashir will only keep growing.
Ah yes ! Who can forget Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasago ! 🤣

Great reporting in a place far far away from our 🇺🇸 comforts. Thank you for bringing the REAL news from Sudan.
If Africa is ever going to have a chance, somehow, someway, the corruption has to be driven out. Completely.
It will never go away. It is part of their values system. The same as ancient religious beliefs who they find more important than anything else.
Keeping throwing resources at most of the African countries is just a complete waste. It needs to stop.
@Bettie Rage It has nothing to do with that & everything to do with complete civilisation collapse under the colonial scramble for Africa period, followed by the 1885 Berlin conference that just drew all the countries on the map. Half of one country that might be thousands of years old, is now spliced with parts or all of others. None of them share the same ethnicity & usually whichever group was closest to the europeans at the time was given all of the power to form a government. These tribes, nations or countries that formed the government were often 20% or made up as little as 4% of the population. Regions that extracted wealth for colonial powers with no rights for a group of people they shared nothing in common with far away from them, remained the system under minority led governments at the opposite side of their country. When these governments get overthrown, usually it is by only one ethnic-regional group that has managed to become dominant & powerful - but the only way to get such wealth and power to oppose a whole nation in such a short time with force come only one way in Africa: exploitation, violence & crime.
So now the original minority governments colonised the other people locked into their countries, but powerful groups(essentially war-lords) who steal wealth from the people & commit horrible acts are the only ones in the position to replace them. Well-intended people have to team up with these key powers if they want to change government; but if they succeed now these key powers are in their government; now they have a government with corruption again.
@Bettie Rage So no, Mr racist.
It isn't some inherent fault of a coloured man.
It is the fault of the West 150 years ago, 100years ago and again 50-70years ago.
-----------
That which makes/keeps Africa unstable & have a unique issue with political corruption. Is from outside. Is from history.
Everyone was raped & pillaged only 150years ago. All the wealth that built the society that now exists in Europe, that funded the industrial revolution, all the produce that filled the rum bottles along with any other luxury, put cotton in the shirts of every European man walking the street was taken by annihilating the pre-existing civilisations.
The suites, cigars, luxury - all started by being bankrolled by & made of taking things from Africa.
Everything stable & nice about consumer European culture today, was founded by being taken from crushing African cultures.
From their ivory tower they look back at Africa & say Africans have an issue from the African culture; nothing else.
Then when Europe was done with Africa, they did not care for it as it was not their countries to start with.
They handed power to the wrong people, but worse the sin of founding a nation they took from its people.
Now the continent tears itself apart, collapsed nations cut in-half ruled by other peoples trying to stitch together live-able conditions for 100 years.
Guess who then goes into Africa with another cause to overthrow governments in the 60s&70's? America and Russia.
A war of ideology. These countries that are just limping into existence, are toppled again for no reason of their own peoples good. Pick a side, either choice and a foreign power with see it as wrong & start a rival faction in your country with much better modern tech than yours. You have to pick, they will fund a rival or assassinate you otherwise
America overthrew countries that were finally led well, to put in the minority ethnic-group dictators again in any countries that picked the wrong side. Russia did the same. Restart the "african government cycle of violence" in the few countries that had managed to lift themselves into civilian led majority government.
The west has directly intervened to destroy African stability again & again.
@@donkeytwoddle Nope. It is a value system. Look at the countries in the Middle East like Lebanon or in Arabian Peninsula like Yemen. They have never been colonies of the "west" and have had exactly the same behavior in their governments (only a tiny port in Lebanon belonged to the "west" and Lebanon was shortly governed by France after WW2). These values in African countries, Yemen and Lebanon are directly derived from ancient and backward religiosity. Look at Poland, the country was kept invaded and under control by all neighboring countries between the 17th and 20th centuries. Even after 2 world wars, it was occupied by the Soviet Union until 1989. As soon as it got freedom it turned into a high-functioning democracy, It is because of the value system in the culture. Nice, "racist" card you have drawn out. Typical ad hominem when someone is not able to debate logically. This infinite "bad west" accusation has to stop. Maybe the west still has influence in some African countries but not all.
Don't be foolish. Africa is a big continent. There are countries within Africa who operate democratically. There was hyperinflation in Venezuela not too long ago. Does that mean I should generalize and say "South America experienced hyperinflation"?

@@tomaszzalewski4541 Once the people gather the courage to protest they wont be afraid of anything anymore. In 2019 hundreds died and thousands got injured yet that did not phase the protestors of today, the difference this time is that they are seeking a complete withdrawal of the military from the political scene and they seem to be adamant about it.
