    Bottom line: these traps work. You must move them around to figure out where the best yield is and once I zeroed in on the best spot, the sticky cards fill up fast. When you first use them. there is a new plastic small that deters some mosquitos but that goes away in about 1-2 weeks plus the water needs time to age. Excellent product and video breakdown by Dr Scott. Biogents makes a great product!

    I've owned two of these and can confirm that they kill mosquitoes. I highly recommend using the mentioned sticky card so that you can see the results easily without even opening the device. The sticky card is also useful for showing to neighbors who might be skeptical (I would suggest posting a video that focuses on these cards for that reason).

    I works, but this is to target 1 specific kind of mosquitoes (tiger mosquitoes), which as the most dangerous, not the most numerous.
    Results are not impressive like for the CO2 traps, but I really appreciate not to have any tiger mosquito in my office now thank to this trap.

    The term "affordable" sure is a loose term to use when it comes to the pricing of these traps. Add in shipping and taxes and that term seems to be even broader when in use. A DIY setup would likely cost virtually nothing and be just as effective to use. Not knocking the product for intended use and development, other than what they claim for the terminology of cost.

    What does the netting do? Is it above the water? How do they lay eggs with no contact on the water?

    • @biogentsag6648
      @biogentsag6648  6 років тому +1

      Dear LeSashea Feagin,
      Aedes mosquitoes tend to lay their eggs slightly above the water level. The barrier net is above the water and hinders the female Aedes mosquitoes to reach the water. Therefore, most of them will not lay their eggs, however, there might be some mosquitoes that still lay their eggs on the net. Of course, eggs can fall through the net into the water then. To prevent development of larvae, we recommend to put some larvicide (bti) into the water and/or empty the trap bucket at least once a week.

    How do we know what species we have? how many traps are needed for a1/2 acre property? Does this attract even more of these damn bugs? That's the last thing I want to do.
    We have no standing water so what else could be attracting them?

    • @biogentsag6648
      @biogentsag6648  6 років тому +6

      Dear Mr Keith Clark,
      To determine which species of mosquitoes you have on your property is difficult without conducting an actual survey. There are 176 species of mosquitoes in the U.S. with different geographic distributions, habitat preferences, daily and seasonal activity patterns, and host feeding preferences. If you are bothered by biting mosquitoes in your backyard during the daytime hours, you most likely have a problem with tiger mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus). Both are small black mosquitoes with distinct white bands on the legs and the abdomen. Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito, can be identified by a white marking in the form of a lyre on the top of the thorax, while Ae. albopictus has a single silvery-white stripe that begins on the head and continues down the center of the thorax. Both species breed exclusively in containers around the yard such as discarded tires, buckets, rainwater barrels, saucers under plant pots, black plastic downspout extensions, tarps over woodpiles, poorly maintained birdbaths, and anything else that will hold water for a week to ten days. They have a rather limited flight range and tend to stay in the same area. If you are troubled more at dusk and into the night, you may have a problem with pest mosquitoes that breed in floodwater, roadside ditches, woodland pools, grassy margins of streams and ponds, and other natural accumulations of water. These species tend to have a longer flight range than tiger mosquitoes and may be coming to your property from up to several miles away. More detailed information on different mosquito species can be found on our website (us.biogents.com/mosquitoes/).
      Biogents sells two types of traps. The BG Mosquitare is a powered suction trap that uses visual cues and an attractive human skin odor lure to attract and capture female tiger mosquitoes that are seeking for a blood host. The BG-GAT trap is a passive trap that requires no power and attracts and kills female tiger mosquitoes that are seeking a place to lay their eggs. The Mosquitare has an attractive radius of about 20 meters (65 feet) and does not attract mosquitoes which are further away. The GAT relies primarily on the short range visual cues it provides to attract female mosquitoes searching for an acceptable location to lay eggs. Because of its short effective range, we recommend placing it in greater densities than the Mosquitare for optimum effectiveness. Determining the number of traps required for a property depends on number of factors including, the shape of the property, how the house is situated, if there is a pool, patio area, vegetable garden, landscaping features, pond, stream, outbuildings, etc. All of these can all influence where mosquitoes will rest and where they may find a breeding site. For 1/2 acre property such as yours, we would recommend at least one BG Mosquitare and 2 BG-GAT traps. Please see (us.biogents.com/positioning-application/) for more information about placing traps for maximum effect.
      If you have different pest mosquito species such as the house mosquito (Culex pipiens or Cx. quinquefasciatus) or floodwater mosquitoes such as Aedes vexans or Ae. sticticus, you will get better trap performance by adding CO2 as a supplemental attractant, otherwise these species will not be attracted to the trap in large numbers. For more information on using CO2 please see (us.biogents.com/why-upgrade-to-carbon-dioxide/).

      thank you. We get both day time and evening/night assaults so I'm guessing we have a couple of types. we only started to notice it last year and it's worse this year for sure. I guess we'll get a couple of each traps and see if it helps. I would imagine we want the traps closer to the living areas in our yard?

    • @biogentsag6648
      @biogentsag6648  6 років тому +2

      Dear Mr Clark,
      Since you are bitten by mosquitoes in the evening as well, it is more likely that there are other mosquito species besides tiger mosquitoes, e.g. house mosquitoes. Therefore, we highly recommend adding CO2 to the BG-Mosquitaire trap in order to attract these types of mosquitoes. Additionally, CO2 increases the capture rate for tiger mosquitoes.
      The CO2 bottles (we recommend 10 kg bottles) are those, which are used in pubs and restaurants, and they are available at gas stores and gastronomy suppliers.
      The placement of the traps is a very complex issue. It is best to try different positions for a couple of days - a few meters can make a big difference. It is possible that the most effective location might be close to your living areas. In general it can be said, the best place for the traps is somewhere in the humid shadow where there is hardly wind, close to the breeding sites (e.g. rain barrels) and resting sites of mosquitoes (they rest under the leaves in bushes). Do not place the trap directly onto the patio or terrace where you are sitting. In this case you would get into competition with the trap and you would win :-). Maybe start with a position under loose bushes that are nearest to your patio.

    What kills no-semus in Florida.They go right thru screens they are so small I get bitten in my lani

    • @biogentsag6648
      @biogentsag6648  5 років тому

      Dear Roger Rabbit,
      There isn't really a good method of control for a large area. The midges can fly about 2 km from breeding sites which can include salt-marshes and mangrove swamps, on shores of streams and ponds, and in muddy substrates. In the tropics, the larval habitat of many species is in rotting fruit, bromeliads, and other water-holding plants. Other larval habitats include mud, sand, and debris at edges of ponds, lakes and springs, tree holes, and manure. Most species cannot exist more than a few inches below the air-water interface.
      But there are a few measures that you can take:
      Homeowners can install proper screening for windows and patios to prevent no-see-ums from entering residences and outdoor areas used for leisure and entertaining. Most biting midges can pass through 16-mesh insect wire screen and netting, so a smaller mesh size is required. The small mesh size does limit air flow through the screens. Additionally, because no-see-ums are so small and are weak fliers, ceiling and window fans can be used at high speeds to keep no-see-ums out of small areas.
      Repellents containing DEET (N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide) typically used as mosquito repellents are also labeled for use against no-see-ums and can be applied prior to exposure to the biting midges. It is important that the directions for application that are printed on the label are followed for any product used as a repellent.
      Coastal areas provide primary habitat for biting midges. Tourists and potential home- and landowners can consult local maps prior to visiting or purchasing property in coastal areas, to determine the proximity to biting midge producing areas. It is prudent to research the area of geographic interest prior to making decisions that can lead to an unpleasant vacation or unhappy homeowners. Knowing the habitats and that large-scale control operations are not feasible, one can be prepared with repellents or make decisions to build or visit elsewhere.

    Will this get the mosquitoes that live in Phoenix Arizona?

    • @biogentsag6648
      @biogentsag6648  6 років тому

      Dear Mr Tobias Bloyd,
      There are many different mosquito species in Arizona: aside from the Asian tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus) and the yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) and other Aedes species also various Culex, Psorophora, and Anopheles are quite common species in Arizona. Our BG-GAT trap (GAT=Gravid Aedes Trap) targets only pregnant female Aedes mosquitoes, mainly Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus.
      If you would like to get rid of mosquitoes of several species, we highly recommend to use not only the BG-GAT but additionally the suction trap "BG-Mosquitaire with CO2". This trap version with CO2 attracts all kinds of mosquito species. The addition of the BG-Mosquitaire CO2 suction trap to the BG-GATs adds another dimension to your control effort: While the BG-GATs target tiger mosquitoes that are looking for a place to lay their eggs, the BG-Mosquitaire CO2 targets females of all mosquito species that are seeking for a bloodmeal host.

      Dear Mariel Grace Mortejo,
      With our traps (BG-Mosquitaire or BG-Sentinel) you can catch the mosquitoes alive. They will be sucked into the trap, and after a while they will dry out. So I recommend to turn off the trap after about 12 hours, and you should be able to get the mosquitoes alive.

      This trap version runs with electricity and attracts with its shape and a special lure (BG-Sweetscent) tiger mosquitoes (Aedes species). In order to attract other blood-sucking mosquitoes, you need to add CO2. Further information can be found here: eu.biogents.com/mosquito-traps/

    What is BTI, how do I get it?

    • @biogentsag6648
      @biogentsag6648  5 років тому

      Dear Mr Gerard Haubert,
      Bti (Bacillus thuringiensis var israelensis) is probably the safest method for controlling mosquito larvae to prevent them from becoming flying adults. It is highly specific and toxic only to mosquitoes and a few related flies and will not harm people, pets, wildlife, or fish. The active ingredients are protein crystals that are produced by the bacteria. Mosquito larvae consume the Bti along with organic material in the water as they feed. Once ingested, Bti will kill 95-100% of the larvae within 24 hours. It can be applied to any standing water as a granular or liquid formulation and can be purchased online and at most garden and home improvement stores.
      For further information on Bti, please have a look at: www.epa.gov/mosquitocontrol/bti-mosquito-control
