Welcome back ladies! Once again you guys did an absolutely fantastic review!
My heart broke just a little more with each scene. It really was a tough episode to watch, but it was very necessary in order to bring to the forefront the realities of life in that era. And I truly take my hat off a million times over to the writers and Diana Gabaldon for tackling such a difficult topic once again!
Oh my goodness did I cry when it came to the last scenes with Rufus. I felt such sadness and fury at the injustice against him, and in general the injustices against p.o.c. of that time. It's very very difficult to digest. In many ways we're blessed to live in an era where such staunch injustices don't exist to such a vast degree. Unfortunately, the ancestors of p.o.c. had to go through all these horrific ordeals to reach where we are today.
Thank you for such a wonderful review! You 2 are truly one of my favorites!!

My 1st time watching your Outlander reviews. I'll have to go back & watch more. This episode was brutal, powerful, horrifying & necessary in many ways. Ron & the team have made a statement about where they are going. It's not just entertainment & even though this series is based on fiction they are serious about real issues of injustice, slavery, racism & more. The final scene of the rabid (used correctly & not as media uses to describe our fandom) mob dragging Rufus' lifeless body to the tree & hanging him in a frenzy of hate blew me away. Couldn't believe Outlander had the courage to show this. I was too stunned to cry while watching it, but now I do. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us.

Thank you for having this discussion. It was very well done and necessary. We usually pretend that our history in the US has no bearing on our lives today, and try to sweep all the ugliness under the rug. It's interesting to think about how Outlander told such an important story about the Jacobite rebellion that it couldn't be shown in the UK until after the Scottish Independence referendum in 2014. Now, here we are in the colonies at this point in the series, in what will soon become the United States of America. The spotlight is hard to take. It won't get easier as we have "The Fiery Cross" (!!!) for the 5th season coming up next. We do need to help each other work through the thoughts and emotions that are being brought out now, but long overdue.

this episode was heart wrenching and extremely hard to watch... and considering today's climate is all too seemly... Outlander should get major awards for taking on such incredibly difficult and controversial material, and doing it with such feeling...Claire is a twentieth century woman living in the eighteenth century, and that in itself has always presented her with huge challenges, when she has always been far ahead of her time, even in her own time... she knows the history, but that pales in comparison to actually LIVING it, and she experiences first hand the horrors that she only read about in books.. being a person who needs, who MUST practice the art of healing, no matter the cost, makes her see that in this point in history, she has few options where her feelings and her conscience are concerned... the writers were very brave in the changes from the book...( I really didn't believe we were going to see Claire operate on a man's privates on that dinner table!) but people need to understand that from here on out, Outlander is no longer a story about Scotland... it is a story about immigrants from Scotland, and how they adopt to their new environment and face the perilous journeys ahead...

Loved some of the changes from the book and didn't like some of the changes...over all...was very good....i miss Jamie from book. I recall him being very worried about being under a manipulative MacKenzie's thumb again...that did not come out as in the book. All-and-all ths tore my heart out.
By the way.... Love listening to your opinions......i also hope Phaedra's story gets told. I loved it in the book. I agree about what you said about the choice of how to die.....but remember Claire learns from each person she treats when in the past.....she is confronted with a lesson about the time she inhabits. She is an alpha female who rushes in before thinking......that is her nature and sometimes that is a good thing and sometimes....not so good. Do u remember in season one the man who was injured by the boar?

Ok. Excuse errors, but I'm still raw. And even though I've not read the books I am a HUGE fan. HUGE! And with all that I've watched in the last the season from Se1to now Se4...This one was rough. That including Black Jacks BS. The separations....to last week CRAZY Bonnet foolery. This Episode was rough. I watched it twice. And started the review last night but had to stop, and picked back on it today. It was rough guys so freaking rough to truly see what went down. How comfortable, and dismissive the residents were was jaw-dropping! The superiority, Hate, and Savagery...and I truly feel...that in actuality, it was worse. Lawd of mercy...I understand Jamie's and Clair decision. Even though, yes he was in clear mind, and should have been given the choice. But the heat of the moment and the chaos...they had to act quickly to help Rufus Pass with comfort and dignity and peace. But that ending...as Jamie laid that body down with absolute kindness and they had that Rope around his neck and dragging him to the Tree...my God...My God. I cried, just based at the injustice of it all on both ends and to what is to come...as I am of Afro and Native American, with a Slash of Scot!
I love this show. And hopefully, I can take what's next

It was so emotional and intense that I didn't realize that Claire took away Rufus' agency regarding his own death, but wow you are right it is inconsistent to the character arc of Claire; She always speaks her mind and explained the social problem CLEARLY to the "mistreated" person in every episode.
