It's a shame they didn't do that so much, cause if they had, we would have had a more consistent and coherent development of the characters and it would have given more life to each one of them and of course Supercorp would have happened. (Have I mentioned before how smart and articulate this woman is? Oh already? doesn't matter I say it again! Lol 😄☺

    I think the screen writer changed the time change from Holloween to Christmas that Rogers travel to Brianna and Claire with news that Jaime( A. Malcolm) is at the printing press because Roger is a professor so it's unrealistic that he'd travel to America to Bri and Claire during the semester.; And on Camera Bri and Roger spending time together during Christmas solidifies theadvancement/ blossoming of their flirty/ love. Holloween is a partying crowded affair opposed to Christmas that is an intimate and family/good friends and loving affair.

    No It does in fact make sense that Jamie's life is so sad because his people are oppressed, over policed by redcoats, and intrusive systematic opressive laws against the now dead Gaelic language speaking Catholic Scotts had sad lives. They did it to them on purpose systematically. The " should be" lair of Lalybrook, Jamie was forced to be a outlaw criminal Red Jaime just because he was Scottish Catholic man who silly laws made hime a "fugitive". Those men were stomped out of society. That's what being systematic stomped out and deviously controlled lives are like ; so of couse Jaime's life is sad and complicated and set up to fail if they dair to hold their heqds high with a strong back... How many time did Ian get arrested and humilated in Lalybrook?

    Geneva raped/ sexual harrased Jamie ... threatens his family with red coats army and revoking his parole Jamie; it's about power even if she is a woman...Also she clearly stated that the soon to be husband was old enough to be her grandfather and she expressed disgust toward him.

    It was so emotional and intense that I didn't realize that Claire took away Rufus' agency regarding his own death, but wow you are right it is inconsistent to the character arc of Claire; She always speaks her mind and explained the social problem CLEARLY to the "mistreated" person in every episode.

    The disgusting way laws were used as a systematic way to uphold slavery and perpetuate the perverted institutions of slavery was upheld by people who were oppressed in the Old World . I also thought it was profound , as you ladies said, that Ian saw the similarities of the Scottish/ Gaelic oprression by the British.

    I wish the rape scenes were not in the books nor the TV series. I remember in the earlier series episodes, Claire would always have a close call, but was saved. I am not a reader of the books, yet. So I thought this too with Bree at first, I thought someone would end up saving her. I was truly shocked and traumatized when I realized she was really being raped. I felt upset for couple days.

    Her father had been chief when Otter Tooth was there. The current chief was young at that time. Not her father. In the book, Otter Tooth was very upset when he came to the village after going through the stones & found that they already had iron pots which meant the white man was already in their lives. He had wanted to arrive before there was influence, at least 50 years before. The show was also inaccurate with the opal. That was given to Claire by one of the women of the tribe after they arrived. The opal would not have survived the trip through the stones.

    Once again....Bree did not communicate to her parents the entire situation. Jamie is wanting to make sure Roger treats Brianna....but obviously he didn't know the entire story. Was the Jamie/Roger thing/fight supposed to be the "male testosterone" thing that happened at the Ridge in the book? I terribly, terribly, terribly miss Jamie and Claire helping Birth Jemmie but there were some nice little touches to the way the baby is born. But that change from the book is a very disappointment to me. I don't think Bree thinks Phaedra is any less a person.....but she is trying to navigate this awkward living situation. Remember when Claire asked her to call her "Claire" ? unfortunately Phaedra does not have the freedom to behave in any other way. It is sad. I felt sorry for Claire and Jamie when they first arrived back at River Run.....Family=Jamie and Claire....Fergus and Marsly. It's the only thing she can do to comfort her at this point. The writers said the reason Sam didn't hold the baby ( the script called for it) his because every time he went to take him the baby fussed so they did it differently. Why not a different baby? These are important scenes. I also missed Jamie and Briannah coming together and repairing things. It is the biggest disappointment of this entire season.....a great season...but a huge, huge missed opportunity to make us all so happy. You are right. How did these red coats know where and WHEN Jamie was? Do they think we wouldn't notice? I like how in the BOOK Roger asks Jamie to cut his wrist, being his closest blood relative and he does the "Blood of my blood, bone of my bone...." Oath and claims his baby then says, "He is my son, are you my wife?" Loved that. You are right Funmbi about the setting up storylines for season 5 by cutting out the season 4 story. At the Gathering, even Roger and Jamie were coming together....respect is growing. And the letter from Frank. "If Claire knew Jamie lived, would she had left me and Brianna to back to him?" And Roger asks Jamie if he would tell Claire and Jamie says, I promised her honesty so, yes. Frank asks for forgiveness and feels guilty for keeping the news from Claire and yet.....he was going to continue to not tell Claire....How about Jamie taking Jem to go play cards... And Claire shaking her head. Jamie says, "never to soon to learn a new skill." And what about the Scottish regiment comes marching up to Jamie? This was my favorite part of the book and somewhat ignored. Katie....read end of DOA....you'll love it. In a way Frank on the tv show helped Brianna let go of her guilt in going back. But unlike in the book Jamie and Claire don't get to exorcise Frank's spirit hanging over them. And when Bree says to Roger that she has seen a marriage of obligation and she has seen a marriage of love and she chooses love. Jamie snap swings his head to Claire. And they have a moment...eye to eye.

      Hey you said my name! And pronounced it correctly! :-) Merrill (executive producer) said in a magazine article this week that they are tenitively shooting for April 2020. It takes 10 months to just film a season, then edit it/refilling.... And on Twitter Sam said he is taking the month off to rest (Feb) before they start filming. Cait said in a magazine interview that she was starting sometime in Feb. And I read that after finishing season 4 (June) that the "actors" asked for seven months off before filming season 5. As of yesterday....Sam said he hadn't seen a script yet but was expecting it soon.

    I want to commend Funmbi and Katie for an excellent year of Outlander reviews. I’ve watched your show each and every episode and sometimes participated in the live chat. I find your commentary to be fun, engaging and intelligent. I do agree that this season was very mixed in terms of content and the way the writers approached the source material. I also agreed that an exploration of early America was going to be extremely problematic based on the depictions of early American life in the book Drums of Autumn. I think my biggest disappointment is that the indigenous people and African slaves were not given more of an interesting storyline. It would have been good to have Native Americans and Africans slaves as more than background and plot devices for the main characters. The controversial tone of European colonialism still echos today. And as a response from fans... some discussions have become heated even borderline racist for example a complaint like “Why does Phaedre have a Scottish accent?” I sooo wanted to break that one down! Crazy reviews that are nothing but complaint rant sessions. This season has NOT brought out the best of the fandom. But you beautiful ladies have been a light for in depth conversation on this and the previous season. Thank you for your time and dedication. Continued blessings! 😘

    If memory serves ( and it may not, lol) I recall that Otter Tooth was part of a group called the Montauk 5... Raymond (under another guise) had a hand in orchestrating their passage & they had intended to go back further in time when they might have made an impact. I think when Otter Tooth realizes the Mohawk have already accepted the conveniences of the white settlers, he knows it's far too late & lends a sort of desperation to his plight... I think the writers went off the rails w/ this season, the important & big moments are glossed over or deleted, i.e... J/C being there for the birth, the Mohawk camp, developing Ian's integration into the tribe as it was laid out in the book, LJG still being at River Run when J/C return? I understand that an adaptation can't include everything, it's a lot of info to cover but they wasted time on insignificant things. I had really expected a longer final episode or at least one more to give some of the big moments their due. I am really curious how they will develop Murtagh's character in the next season... as it is, he would need a pardon to marry Jocasta, do we get a version of Duncan Innes aka regulator leader in disguise, name change to pull it off while his face is plastered all over broadsheets? Idk? Lol... [Edit]. " Maintaining integrity of timelines" that was it exactly Funmbi, you said in 4 words what I tried to express in paragraphs, thank you. I felt the ending missed a great opportunity to give us the reconciliation we wanted. It was just messed up w/ the redcoats usurping that moment. At the end of the day, I am very grateful we even have Outlander brought to life on film, while I can critique certain things that miss the mark, I still enjoy some of the sweet moments that are included. Thank you both for your time, it's going to be a long Droughtlander, lol... meantime, wish you both the best.

    I agree with you, Fumbi: the writers seem to be more interested in action in this final episode than in showing us - however briefly - several important relationships. Maybe they could have shortened the Roger beating on Jamie scenes & given us one little darn Jamie/Bree moment; just one. I agree that the Jocasta wedding & the Gathering was well-written in the book. Another weird writers decision. (You ARE respectful, BTW).

  • @moniquearenas5338
    @moniquearenas5338 5 років тому

    The gathering is quite a nice chunk of book five. My thoughts are that they’re keeping the gathering all in one season instead of splitting it into two seasons.

  • @lilymack4028
    @lilymack4028 5 років тому

    As always, loved your video. Couple of things (just my opinion): 1.) Yes Fumbi, I agree that Otter Tooth was such a sad, tragic character. 2.) About the Native sitting on the park bench: I saw an angry Native man; not one rolling his eyes at the antics of kids playing Cowboys & Indians. 3.) On that note, if that was Otter Tooth, known by her grandfather (so maybe 70-80 years before), why was the he shown on the park bench in the '60's? Shouldn't he have been pictured on a park bench back in the early 20th century. IE; 19015? 3.) The fight to get Roger out was weird & just dumb (& BTW, not in the original story). Mohawk warriors-including the Chief's daughter (or wife?) - would have never gone against the leader's declaration. Maybe they should add a Native writer to the writers' team? There's more to culturally-appropriate story lines than getting the buildings & costumes right. The thinking is "White"; not Native. 4.) I know this is the show & not the book, but why did the writers' change the profound birth scenario including new grandparents Claire & Jamie? It was such a bonding family event when Claire delivers him & Jamie takes his newborn grandson in his arms. Instead, the writer's decide to make that 1st moment when Jamie sees his 2 month old grandchild a non-event. He barely looks at the child. Do they not know our Jamie? He would never have acted that way. Great acting by one & all, but serious problems with the writing of this episodes, IMHO. (Except for "Murcosta", obviously. THAT was awesome).

    Hi Funmbi & Katie, I just want to say I always enjoy your reviews... you both made so many good points :) As a book reader I have always loved LJG, I recall last episode he told Bree, "Sometimes people do the wrong things for the right reasons", I thought that so poetic & true to human nature & as it turns out prophetic to all the central characters involved... There is so much to pack into this last episode, I am hoping for more than 1 hour to do so, lol... I thought the mvp's for this episode were Marsali, she always nails it, what a great actress Lauren Lyle & Roger gave us an outstanding performance 👏🏼 I think the dichotomy between Roger, a 20th century man & not versed in Catholicism vs a Catholic priest in the 1700's, a position Roger cannot really relate to is so poignant... Roger tries to get to the bottom line of a practical solution while the priest indoctrinated as he is, cannot conceive of such an escape... I was so alarmed when the red coat Mohawk picked up the baby, I was afraid he was going to toss her into the fire! >.< ... I still can't believe we are looking at the final episode, oh my gosh this season went so fast! Thank you for taking the time for us, you two are the best review out here :)

    Hi. I just stumbled upon your video recap this past week and am sad that I didn't "run into" you guys sooner. You've done a wonderful job. So many other Outlander recaps and reviews get dozens of details wrong that it's utterly exasperating. However, you both clearly take notes to ensure that your comments and analysis are based on what actually happened and not what you think you remembered. Thank you! For that reason, I was able to relax and enjoy learning about how you felt it. Brava!

    Knowledge of narrative device makes me pretty sure Bonnet survived - and the reason we saw his 'moment of realisation' is because it sets up him arriving at Fraser's Ridge to claim paternity and mess up any Brianna/Roger reunion... And am I the only one who read Roger's "I'm an idiot" monologue as a guy desperately trying to convince himself that he has finally given up? It's why the moment of his turning back was both beautiful funny and inevitable - Roger is not the kind of guy to just 'look out for number one', even if he can be an idiot sometimes...

    The fire/suicide scene was SO amazing & horrible. I knew it was coming but still cried so much I got a headache. It was so well done. Just to let you know, no, it wasn't a Native custom for wives to suicide with husband's. They wouldn't be left to live alone; they'd move in with another family or move in with a sibling's family. Also, Natives don't burn bodies after death. IOW, her decision was not culturally-related. (In the book, she simply handed off the baby to a woman she was standing nearby.)

    Katie, you explained it well, Roger talks the big talk but at heart, he is who he is. A lot of Mohawk would have spoken French at that time....due to being so close to the French speaking folks there and in Canada. Roger tells Fr. Alexander to just take the shortcut and save himself and he out of a bad situation....but Roger could have touched the stone as an exit out of a bad situation and did not. Father Alexander can not perform a sacrament if he has fallen from grace. I see him as a hero in a way....he is trying to return to his vow to God. Remember the Catholic faith has a large component.....of Sainthood who stood fast against torture and styed steadfast to your faith and love of God. Father Alexander is looking for redemption. I do not think any thing would have changed in Father A's mind...He was determined to martyr himself to redeem his soul. You don't change from who you are....as Roger doesn't really.
