- There’s a bill working its way through the Parliament that presents a clear and present danger to the free and open internet, to freedom of expression and to privacy online. It’s a private member’s bill that shockingly has gotten traction.
In a nutshell, it will require any website on the entire global internet that makes sexually explicit material available to verify the age of anyone who wants access, to ensure that they are not under the age of eighteen. Keeping sexually explicit material away from kids sounds like a laudable goal and one that most people can get behind.
The devil, as they say, is in the details. It presents a real risk to privacy, a real risk to freedom of expression and a real danger to the open internet in Canada. The author of the Bill says it does none of that, but I believe she is mistaken.

This bill shouldn't fly in the slightest. There's so much wrong with this that those pushing this bill should be looked into to see if there were more insidious purposes for getting that info.
People can put child filters on their computers that do all of this without the need for the government to get involved. Especially when parents could just keep track of their childrens browser history.
If she was appointed by Trudeau I highly doubt she is legitimately independent.

And on the technical side, even if some common 0-knowledge or "AI-based" authentication method could be found for age-verification, _someone_ would find a way to subvert or exploit it. Your encyclopedia example is good. I can think of other examples in which foreign actors could wreak denial-of-service havoc in a world where cars, fridges, homes are connected just like my desktop computer and phone. People place too much faith in tech.
Thank you for posting this. This is one of the scariest things I have heard of recently. It raises so many questions and concerns that it is mind boggling that the bill is progressing. Some times good intentions are not enough.
So bureaucrats who are shielded from personal accountability get to make decisions on what I can do

I don't know anyone who would upload ID to use the internet. Like you said...bad things can happen when biometrics are involved. If it did become a law however, I'd just stop using the internet.

Seriously? What happens if you put your infrastructure outside Canada and register your company outside of Canada?
What about education, most porn can easily be defined as education, most BDSM porn is educational. It would be hard to claim Sexual Brokem, Device Bondage, The Upper Floor, HuCow, and other BDSM series aren't educational.
Another thing, just use a VPN and make sure your DNS resolvers are encrypted. Make sure your site informs people to alway use a VPN, and how. This is a stupid, stupid bill.
Sites hosted outside Canada will not be affected, but the CRTC could force Canadian ISPs to block access; though this is easily circumvented through VPNs as you mentioned. Your idea that most porn can be defined as educational is nonsense; pornography is produced with prurient intent and I know of no court case that says otherwise. Not that I am some kind of puritan looking to limit what adults access, and I agree it is a deeply stupid bill.
@andrewj464 okay but let's assume a child has questions about alternative sexual lifestyles, that's where BDSM porn, done safely, and with consent, becomes educational. Would you know a teacher or many parents who would be comfortable handling questions about BDSM themes?
