St Pancras Station is one of my favourite train stations in Britain. It is a story of riches to rags to riches again. Once the largest single span arched roof in the world, it was opened in 1868 as part of the Midland Railway's London extension from Bedford (~50 miles north of London), it was bombed in both World Wars, poorly repaired afterwards (with solid metal panels replacing the original glass), seemed destined for the wrecking ball in the 1960's (it was proposed to close it and turn the site into a car park), became a dark and damp place with diesel fumes hanging in the air come the 1990's and with the Channel Tunnel Rail Link, what became HS1, it was sympathetically restored and adapted.
Since reopening in 2007, it has had the metal panels that were put in to repair the bomb damage to the roof replaced with glass and during the work, the engineers uncovered the original sky blue colour, which they christened "Barlow Blue," after the original designer of the station, William Barlow

I used to use St Pancras back in the 70s as it was my London terminus. It was dark and smelled of diesel fumes (which as a young child I found wildly exciting lol!) - but it is now just stunning - just shows what a bit of TLC can do to a building.

It's hated by Parisians , let me tell you. The suburban commuting sections (underground) are hellish to navigate.
There are plans to "move" the station north and create a new one at Saint Denis Pleyel. Starting everything from scratch, you know. By 2040, it should happen i believe.

I’ve only been on Eurostar once London to Paris and loved it, I had a standard seat which was very comfortable and lots of legroom and there was only about 6 people in our carriage, so clean, fast and comfortable, and surprisingly quiet and definitely faster than going out to Heathrow with the recommended 2 to 3 hours prior to departure.

Just as a nitpick, the route you show at 0:48 is the legacy "slow" lines between Paris and Calais, the Eurostar uses the LGV Nord, which takes a slightly longer route past Lille, but has a much higher top speed than the legacy line, making it much faster for the Eurostar.
Also the top speed of the Eurostar is 190mph, 100mph is the speed limit through the channel tunnel, but the LGV Nord and HS1 lines both have top speeds of 190mph.

    • @bottletopgirl
      @bottletopgirl 2 роки тому

The maximum speed of Eurostar in normal service is 186mph. The E300 trains are limited to that speed, the newer E320 trains can go 200mph. Speed limits through the tunnel is around 65mph, and you don't travel much above 140mph in the UK.

The javelin class trains that also run on the high speed line run much slower. It takes 40 ish minutes to get from ashford station to st pancras with those trains. Those are going 140mph which is roughly 225km/h but I believe the Eurostar runs at 270 I believe on the section.

Soon after my 2nd wife and I were married in 2010, one of her 1st husband's daughters was getting married at a town in southern France (Don't recall the name). We flew in, stayed there for several days and then took the train to northern France, changed trains and then went through the Chunnel to London. First, I could hardy believe the speed (425 kilometers/hour) and the smoothness. The landscape was literally zooming by so fast I couldn't make out any details. All I can say is....America has MUCH to learn about trains! BHE

Then when we did pull out we passed through what I think must have been a Loyalist area and had a whole lot of kids stone the train! Then we had the IRA regularly leaving bombs on the track, though I think that was an attempt to lure out and kill British soldiers!

One correction, when you leave St Pancras Station you are in the London Borough of Camden, not the City of London. If you walk south you will be in the City of Westminster. The City of London refers to the square mile around the Bank of England devoted to finance. The City of London is a medieval throwback that has its own local government and is legally separate from Greater London, which surrounds it. So London is one of the world's great cities, but only a tiny, separate part is called the City of London!

Rode Eurostar round trip from London to Paris back in June of this year. This is by far the fastest way to travel between the two cities. I also had to do this with three other people one of whom could not walk very well and eight large pieces of luggage (I only had one suitcase and my backpack). While riding it I was always thinking about how badly we need this in the U.S. There are plenty of routes in the U.S need a train route like this. London to Paris is roughly the same distance between NYC and Boston which Amtrak Acela does in 3 hrs 50 mins and D.C and NYC which Acela does in just under 3 hrs.
Trains like this are great because the get you from city center to city center. Flying this route means getting to Charles De Gaulle Airport which can be up to a hour by car with traffic or shorter by train. Then going through security, waiting for plane, boarding said plane, flying the less than one hour to either Heathrow or Gatwick, go through passport control get checked luggage (if you brought it with you), get either car (which is another hour during rush hour) or take train into city. This same principal applies in both scenarios in from NYC to Boston or D.C to NYC. In Jeb's video where he did the train or plane from D.C to NYC the train won. Other people did the exact same video from London to Paris and the train won handily.

I love traveling all over Europe in the train. It’s economical, a lot of fun and none of the herding you like cattle which I feel every time I fly!

hi, jeb, I live in London and come from France and the Eurostar for me is a way to go from Paris to London and vis versa. I have been taking that train since i was probably 3 and it for the most part didn't change at all. If you end up on a packed train, i can tell you, this is miserable (talking abt business rn). Most of the time seats are filthy and the tables too. Food is also discusting.

Another great review. The seat of Eurostar is much better than Business Class in the aircraft, as in the air, they sell narrow and barely reclinable economy class seats with a blocked middle seat as business class.

I took the Eurostar in 1995. It was out of Waterloo station. Gare du Nord is a great station. There are some great stations in Europe.

    Jeb,could I suggest a few ideas?
1)An updated baggage handler video(in light of all the troubles people had last summer globally)
2)A video dedicated to a London to Paris and back in 24 hrs. Is it possible?
3)Train travel with the UK and how to do it.
Your videos are so detailed and hope to see more as spring and summer approach!

Decided to do a quick Paris visit during a recent London trip. With Eurostar, I was able to arrive in Paris in the morning and spend a full day, before heading back to London in the evening. I was impressed by the whole experience. I did Standard going, and Standard Premiere on the return. Both were comfortable, with Standard Premiere we were also served meals and it wasn't much more than Standard. The service was great. I can see myself checking out other Eurostar destinations when the opportunity arises.

This is what I plan to do. Do a day trip to Paris. What sounds good to me about business class is skipping the long lines to get on the train. (Security/Immigration)?

It wasn't long for me at all. It was a Monday in August and I took the earliest train out and the last one returning. I was late getting back to the station but thankfully sailed right through security.

For the past couple of years, I've taken the Eurostar quite a lot (about once per month), travelling between Rotterdam and London. I travel equally on Standard Premier and Standard; however, in May I took a trip in Business Premier as most other tickets were sold out or very expensive. To be honest, I was very disappointed. Yes, you get to skip the long normal security line, which is a benefit, but the lounge in London was rammed, with standing room only, and the food on offer was poor. On board, the seats are the same as Standard Premier, and they often even serve the same wines. The food was also the same, except for the main course, which was hot instead of cold, and slightly bigger portion-wise. Overall, it was a poor value for money (Business Premier is £299 each way). Standard Premier is typically far better value for leisure travel, or if you're paying yourself, as you get the same seats and almost as delicious food on board (the desserts are always very tasty!)
That said, regular Standard class is also very nice, with plenty of space on the new e320 trains, and there's always the option of buying some food and wine before you get on-board (or at the café car)...

The Channel tunnel always gets a lot of publicity while the Seikan tunnel in Japan connecting Honshu and Hokkaido islands barely gets a mention, it's longer, opened earlier and the trains are faster.

Takes 20 mins through the tunnel on Eurostar, 35 mins for the LeShuttle. They have 4G leaky feeders in the tunnel. Probably best just to use mobile signal.

It's interesting that Kuga's Travel (a popular Japanese travel vlogger, does a lot of videos of Japanese trains and overnight ferries) released a Eurostar video yesterday and has a Caledonian Sleeper video coming soon. It's very possible you crossed paths. Good to see different perspectives too.

Great video. Such a civilised way to travel. My wife and I didn’t St Pancras to Paris in Business Premier and it was a bucket list moment for me. I was so impressed with the train and level of service. The interesting part is that you clear French passport control in London

And if travelling paris->london, passports are cleared for both countries in gare du nord. So if travelling -> Paris and if travelling-> london, on arrival at each end one merely walks off the train!!
