Sorry for being ill-informed, but this is the first time I heard Melis. I subscribed to his channel before I finished listening to this piece. I am a big fan of Rachmaninov and have heard Heifetz, Perlman, Vengerov, Bell, among others, playing the Vocalize. All are touching and moving. To my ears, however, this performance by Melis is the very one that plucks the strings of my soul. I love it so much that I will come back to this video again and again and try to emulate Melis.

Such a nice piece, however I had some much trouble to find a performance that suited my personal style as there are so many over the top/ or way too flat performances. Vengerov was the only one for a while but finally I found Melis. I love it, so pure, clean and simple yet still so deep. Fantastic!

To answer the question why singers of only the highest quality attempt to sing this piece.
It requires exquisite breath control, perfect vocal placement and a connected legato to execute the beautiful musical lines.
The phrasing and coloring of the tone is quite challenging as well.
Anna Moffo sings this

She makes you understand why it was written for the voice, as no instrument can pour out the emotion like the human voice.

В музыкальных школах скрипачи эту пьесу играют уже в средних классах, если не раньше. А вот как пьесу для голоса - за неё берутся только самые выдающиеся вокалисты. Интересно, почему такая разница?

Вокалисты прежде чем взяться за исполнение это произведение Рахманинова , должны пройти долгий и тернистый путь к высочайшему мастерству!!! Не знаю, что сложнее развернутая оперная ария или " Вокализ"!?!?!?
