    A few things most people don't know:
    1) EVs, believe it ir not, existed 120 years ago. At that time, the competition was between gas-powered cars, EVs, and steam-powered cars. The company Stanley Steemer is actually the only company I'm aware of today that began it's company life selling steam-powered cars. And in point of fact, Jay Leno not only has a 1908 EV, but also 3 Stanley Steemer cars. Of course, as we all know, cars themselves were invented at a time when horses and wagons were still the default mode of going from place to place, and cars from 1884 to 1910 were considered a "novelty."
    2) Louis is 100% right about the "What if...gas engines were designed today?" question. The way it would work is, a digital key would control a microswitch in the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). That microswitch would basically block, if not turned on, the engine's Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKS) from telling the ECU/PCM to fire the ignition coils. On diesels, because they operate off of compression alone, the control signal would be used to keep the ECU/PCM from firing the fuel injectors, thus preventing a diesel engine from running.
    3) John Deere actually lost a lawsuit against a farmer who refused to pay a John Deere tech more than $800 to travel 150 miles and back from a John Deere dealership to reset his $60K combine's ECU after it bricked, when he had to change out a $125 sensor that went bad, and the combine entered "Limp Mode." That farmer won a Right-To-Repair lawsuit by getting a court to force John Deere to allow independent dealers and shops access to what John Deere wanted as propietary software for diagnostics and repair functions. The independent dealership was only 20 minutes away from the farmer by car, but originally could not access the John Deere combine they sold the farmer. And in all honesty, I'm a believer in Right-To-Repair, not to mention I'm a DIYer myself.
    Lastly, I will say to anyone who likes liberty, likes freedom, NOT TO BUY any new car after 2026. Why? Simple: In the Infrastructure Act passed by Congress last year, it is mandated that all new vehicles, no matter powertrain, have to have installed passive monitoring systems that monitor for drunk driving. If that system gets tripped, for whatever reason, law enforcement will be notified, and you'll get pulled over, even if all you did was avoid a pothole or other road hazard, and even if you are sober. Such a system will also track you and your location, I believe to set the groundwork for a mileage-based tax tied to your license. And why do I think this? Because states like Ohio, California, Washington State, Oregon, Illinois, New York, Delaware, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut are scrambling to replace the lost fuel taxes they anticipate are going to happen, when they claim EVs are going to phase out ICE cars and trucks.

      I'd be fine with a "you are drunk, pull over" notification and maybe the car being a little more hands-on with driver aids when it detects I'm drunk. It's not about my freedom to drive hammered but about everybody else's freedom to not die on the road because of some drunk idiot.
      But this is ridiculous. Calling law enforcement?
      At least we know one thing for a fact. Tesla's implementation will be so fucked up that law enforcement will disregard these notifications coming from tesla cars

      @@Thenolife3 They already do. But in the future, those spywares would have legally mandated power to sabotage you/override your individual decisions. The spywares would be used for more reasons than selling user data to brokers/advertizers and the market analysis of the manufacturers

      I'd be wary of buying a specialized bicycle anyways. They have all kinds of wear parts. Do you really want to have to buy brake pads, chains, sprockets, and all kinds of other things online because your manufacturer didn't conform to standard? Just buy a bog-standard frame, get an ebike conversion kit, and you can get your bike maintained by any bike shop in the world.

      Anything that relies on a phone app for basic functionality is extra stupid because in a few years the OS will drop support for the API level of the app and you will either have to rely on an old phone just for the app (if it's even still available in the app store), or throw the device in the trash.

      Companies factor in the fact that they're gonna make more money by having a closed eco system into their profits. Would you pay more for something without an app? We both probably would since we are here. But what about most people out there that only focus on the price. As a society we have encouraged companies to do everything they can to have lower prices. And somewhere along the lines they figured out they can increase profitability while reducing prices by having locked down ecosystem and poor repairability

      Imagine considering buying a *car* that is dependent on a phone app. The US auto manufacturer I retired from was introducing phone-based keys, I'm sure with an eye on eliminating physical keys eventually as a cost-saving move.

      Since the introduction of ECUs, more and more restrictions/DRMs have been imposed to ICE cars that reduce right to repair and increase dependency on first party maitenance/repair.

      A lot of cars require a scan tool just to reset maintenance lights and retract electric rear parking brake motors in order to change the brake pads. Even Honda does this shit and it's infuriating.

    I think part of the problem is that since EVs are new, companies feel like they can lock everything down because it doesn’t come with the preexisting culture of repairability like ICE, regular bicycles, etc

      ​@@weird-guy The question is how much software updates you need? Really. In super easy and inaccurate terms, electric motor is a device that starts spinning when you connect it to the right electric source. So, you have battery, wire, motor and some switch. What else is needed? Let's add some device that checks how much power it consumes and another one that checks heat on the motor and on the battery. So far no software updates are needed. Honestly, not much software is needed.
      So far we have nothing to get hacked there, there is no external connection and basically no software. So, the question is, do you NEED any updates? I think that all those problems start when you connect to Internet, but do you NEED Internet connection? You don't need it for navigation, I remember those GPS devices for cars that had antenna and no Internet.
      There is only one kind of electric vehicles where you need Internet and that is drone with control over Internet. That is crazy thing, you put in SIM card with cell data and you can control it from anywhere. OK, that one needs some updates to protect it from hacking, but for all personal transportation devices a key is good enough.

      @@simonspacek3670 I have a 20 year old fan here that doesn't need internet, doesn't need bluetooth, doesn't need apps, doesn't need any keys. EVs don't need that either. If the vehicle doesn't have a build-in monitor to tell me things like battery status or distance travelled I could accept a phone app to tell me those things, but that's about it. And even that app doesn't need network connection. It only needs to read stuff from the EV, nothing else.

      Most of the sponsor offers I get are garbage. I'd happily sponsor a company like ebikes.ca or em3ev but since they're actually good companies with proper support and quality products they do not need random UA-camrs shilling them and shouting them out 50000x a day to hypnotize people into buying junk; because they _don't sell junk!_ so it would be a waste of $$$ for them.
      Unpaid word of mouth from happy customers who can demonstrate the superiority of your products is the best and most trusted form of advertising.

    Just wanted to say, BMW put subscription heated seats in a car that wasn't full electric.

      That's my point, it is not inherent to the technology, it is inherent to the company producing it. Making electric bikes or electric vehicles that are not freedom respecting is a design decision, not something that is inherent to the actual drive train technology being used.

      Depends. A lot of "freedom" approved products are garbage and quickly made due to some political bs going on. See the freedom phone.
      If it's anything like that or similar, it's not worth covering.
      Gotta be cautious nowadays with anything claiming to be freedom or patriotic, because usually it's just a political show and not an actual freedom product.

    Loosely related, in China they put so many regulations on eBikes and scioters trying to push people to buy electric cars that you have a contramovement where healy people buy electric wheelchairs because they aren't regulated and they have speed and autonomy. Insane times.

      It is kinda also happpening in my city, stores have been offering and pushing electric stepscooters.
      And they are dangerous, unstable, bad brakes and very small wheels but they go like 20mph and the speed they need to react to other traffic is about 10mph, so soon they are gonna be heavily regulated. And hopefully those pesky stepscooters will disapear. hehehehe (I am 28 but got into many near accidents with these drivers with a death wish that can't break on time even if they wanted to)
      And i don't want them to endanger others and me :P

    VanMoof already went belly up last week. It was all over the news here in The Netherlands. Bikes are offered on marktplaats (our e-Bay equivalent) for scraps because no one can service them and the official VanMoof stores were closed because angry customers were lining up there to complain.
    Let's hope this debacle will be a lesson to everyone.

      Heb je die ene debiel gezien die 2 vanmoof ebikes had omdat er altijd eentje ter reparatie was hahahaha. En volgens my stonden ze allemaal voor de deur om hun defecte ter reparatie aangeboden fiets terug te halen. Als je je fiets 6x per jaar ter reparatie aan moet bieden en je doet dat nog steeds dan ben je volgens niet echt boos, en klagen doen ze hier altijd voor alles maar het zijn nog steeds vanmoof fanbois.

    I always find it sad when people talk about how much they hate computers, but they use locked down operating systems and software and are too scared to take things apart. It's a lot of fun tinkering with things, either on the software or hardware side.

I know how to tinker and I like to tinker, but I'm human and I know that we [humans] make mistakes. I can't necessarily afford to replace any given device should I fuck it up - most devices aren't really designed to be disassembled easily with the adhesives they use and such either ...

    Justin, the owner of Grin, is an amazing person. One of my friends used to work for them back when they were at their old shop. They went above and beyond to experiment and verify what the best materials, design, etc to use for motor design, controllers, batteries, and literally everything else. Louis is right about how helpful and supportive they are at Grin.

    Yeah, my colleagues and I in this hobby/industry work on and build PEVs (personal electric vehicles) every day. Many are easily fixable, some are not. When I can’t fix something, it’s because the manufacturer chose to use parts that can’t be worked with unless you get them from the manufacturer. More and more though, people are electing to gut the electronics of these PEVs and replace them with open-source based ESCs, custom batteries, etc. My goal when I build a PEV is that A) It doesn’t break easily, so I never have to hear about it again, and B) If I died tomorrow, they could bring it to any decent tech or builder to have it fixed if it does break.

In Portugal someone EV converted a MK1 Ford Escort, so a REALLY OLD classic rally legend and the car took the longest time to get legalized by the DMV. Looking up information on the laws to convert cars here are opaque and explain jack about what exactly you can and CANNOT do to your car, or what is required for certain types of modifications... It's infuriating.
      And before anyone mentions the "sin" of EV swapping a classic and excusing these murky laws of my country, just know that if Hydrogen combustion (what ICE fanboys claim will save that type of engine) conversions were a thing these days, the owner would be facing the exact same problems.

    Not so long ago we had vehicles that used an actual key.
    No app or internet needed or even a battery needed.

    I'm glad you clarified this as I have encountered people who believe that promoting R2R/independent ownership is against security, which is not the case. I am actually a fan of security keys for bikes, cars, homes, etc. However, I am wary of having a third-party company come between me and my property and potentially acting as middlemen or holding my possessions hostage. I believe it is reasonable to want complete control over the things I own and not be locked out due to technical errors or mistakes.

      The trouble is that the vast majority of owners aren't knowledgeable enough about security to be able to implement their own security systems effectively. Of course, that's not to say that R2R and independent ownership ARE actually against security, as it's entirely possible to for a third party to make security systems that still respect independent ownership (physical keys, or cryptographic keys that are stored or generated on the host device, not a cloud server as an example), but the majority of consumers are rather forced to rely on a third party for the security of their systems simply because they lack the knowledge required to do it themselves.

    Another good thing about a removable battery: theft deterrent. I know someone who always removes their bike battery after locking their bike and takes it with them to reduce the probability that it will be targeted for stealing

    I would also argue that companies that lock their vehicles and devices are anti-sustainability and they should be penalized for false advertising. When you make it very difficult to repair your electronics devices or your vehicles, and you make it more expensive to get them repaired, that makes you less likely to want to keep it for a long time and just replaced it for a new one therefore increasing the amount of waste.

    I’ve watched a lot of eBike videos over the past 3 years and Louis is the first person I’ve seen to describe what an advantage it is to be able to accelerate with city traffic. For me, this is one of the greatest features of an eBike.

    You're absolulty right, thank you Louis! I have a disability and use an e-trike for recreation. I purchased it about 7 years ago and it came with a Bionx hub motor. Last year the motor failed and since Bionx is now out of business and their system is locked down I had to look elsewhere. I purchased a kit from Grin Technologies and I couldn't' be happier. I'm not sponsored by them in any way, I'm just a very satisfied customer who wants to spread the word that in my experience Grin is an all around great company that really does respect user's freedoms.

      dont know how feasible it is, maybe doable with maybe not, may just need some relays and thats it.
      i do know of a rather bad example on a honda?(probably not) EV in which when you stop breaking and start accelerating, the switch from regenerative breaking to usage actually clashes, ie there will be twice as much energy coming from the motors themselves AND the batteries thusly burning/exploding the motor because of overamperage.
      technology connections also showed a rather bad example on evs that use regenerative breaking...to break... BUT not lighting up the break light, IF you're using one pedal mode that is.

    This is a common misconception that older generations have. The idea that "if its electric, then it does not respect freedom" needs to be changed. I think that Tesla helped establish this idea. But as Louis says, electric vehicles can be as free as you design them to be. Many electric bike manufacturers are required to sell bikes locked at a certain max speed but this is easily reversed. Your ebike is as free as you build it to be.

      How much freedom will you have when the ICE bans go into effect and you discover that, since the electric grid can't support that many EVs and they require rare materials to build, the total cost of EV ownership shoots up to something almost nobody can afford? Then it won't matter how the EV is built.
      EVs are here to assuage your concerns about the ICE bans that are being passed in various places. You're not meant to realize that the real goal is to force everybody to rely solely on public transportation and bicycles.

      LRIG - the LRIG brings together long term values investors to seed companies doing XYZ and meeting ABC principals. Standard minimum investment terms bring some value to LRiG today when they become customers, otherwise reward is long term, based on company success over 5-10years.

      That is why the "too big to fail" doctrine brought in during the 2008 financial crisis is so dangerous.
      it is similar to how the rail workers were legislated back to work: with only 1 sick day per year during a pandemic requiring at least 10 sick days* if you get sick. The railroads are too important to the economy to allow the workers to cause a necessary disruption. Their safety concerns were proven correct within 3 months of being legislated back to work.
      *You may have seen the revised guidance saying you only need to stay home 5 days. That is because the airlines did not have enough healthy staff left to work Christmas/New Year 2021. So instead to taking steps to mitigate the ongoing pandemic: they just changed the rules.

    I'm a fair bit lazier than Louis when I built my electric bike. I converted my old, year 2000, Apollo Summit MTB to electric with a $700AU TDR 1000w 48v kit from eBay. Works well, even though I'm fat as (148kg), it still hits 25km/h (maximum legal speed here for e bikes, although I can disable the limiter and I've taken it up to 48km/h).
    I have had to pull apart the battery pack and replace the BMS once, but other than that it's great. I just hit the switch and off I go. No DRM, no phone app, nothing. It was a tonne of fun to build, and I can service it and repair it myself.
    I would never buy one of those fully Integrated battery in the frame nonsense e bikes.

      Welp if I go electric it will be a true E-MTB Enduro for the sport and there is only one with a motor and gearbox combined that can provide that. Proprietary stuff is in it but I still would buy it because anything else is trash on the market compared to this solution.

    Around where I live, this practice of including software on ebikes is actually outlandish. We have a really strong culture of repairing our own bikes here or going to a local (vendor-independent) repair shop, so bikes that are locked in like Apple devices wouldn't fly.

    Sounds like an amazing market for engineers and programmers to start making custom open source boards to bypass restricted features.
    I knew a student in 2021 that was selling custom raspberry pi assemblies set up and wired up as a bypass tool for car heated seats and was gonna have a potential heated seat subscription. It bypassed the infotainment system completely and wired straight to the battery.
    I’d rather not let it get to that point, but if it does, hopefully there is proper retaliation.

    Plenty of ICE vehicles have "subscription"/ app-based shit. The issue is NOT EV vs ICE, it's about OWNER control of the shit they BOUGHT. Electric propulsion is fine and for some use cases preferred. There is nothing about a bike (or any other vehicle) being electric that REQUIRES communicating to some server somewhere or having DRM "protected" controls. A $20 box fan is equally powered by an electric motor. The normal "app" for those is a four-position mechanical switch, LOL. I do like the idea of building one's own E-Bike! My grandfather used to say: "Do it yourself, and YOU know where the bodies are buried"- No, he was not a mob hit man, just his colorful way of saying that you know where the potential flaws are in your own project. LOL.

    That's an example of "issue linkage" where unrelated issues are frequently combined together. Freedom of access has been linked to the drive train being electric. You're 100% on the nose and thank you for bringing it up. When these are linked in legislation its often called "logrolling".

    I totally agree with you. However I think the main problem is not everyone is willing to build a bike themselves as it adds so much more friction to obtaining a bike. Same as cars, not everyone will retrofit EV tech into a non EV vehicle to make it not anti-freedom. For now the best option for those people are to just not touch EVs, till we get a couple companies actually doing things the right way.

      There are builders that do it the right way, Magnum makes there bikes within in the limits set forth by law, while giving you the freedom to set up your prefered power level and utilize Generic easily replaceable parts. Aerial Rider, is another and Rider1up. none of these bikes need anything more than you pressing a button to get them to work.

    Louis, in many of these types of videos I often hear you speak about how companies and society used to be more freedom respecting, and this is true. However, I think this pairs with an equally important trait that has gone missing from society: Self Reliance.
    In my house growing up, my dad did basically everything that needed to be done to the house, the yard, or the cars to keep everything in usable and adequate condition.
    I learned these skills from him, and continue to do almost everything in life myself, but combined with an even greater skillset than he could ever have imagined, thanks to insane advancements in technology.
    It seems that society has been conditioned to call in someone else for every little job, and to hand over all sense of self reliance to some other entity, be it corporate, an AI bot, or some government lackey.
    One thing I have always admired about your channel is your "can-do-it" attitude, and the fact that you don't gatekeep your knowledge; but on the contrary, you readily share it, and nudge people to exercise power over their own day-to-day lives.

      100% this. I grew up in a lower income family. We didn't have the money to call someone to fix something. Our only option was to fix it ourselves. It didn't matter what the problem was or what was broken. We did our best to figure it out and fix it ourselves. If we couldn't fix it then we could call someone who could. I'm still this way. Why would I take my car to a mechanic when I can just fix it myself for a fraction of the cost.
      Another problem I've ran into many times is that these so called "professionals" don't always do good work. Just about every time we've hired someone to do work at our house, they do mediocre work. Don't get me wrong. They get the job done and it's acceptable, but it's not great. They don't do what we ask or argue about how to complete the work. The don't want to do work that's up to code. My experience with multiple mechanics have been the same. I've had multiple mechanics do less than what was in the quote and then try to overcharge. I've also experienced the opposite, they will do twice as much as what was in the quote and the bill is double. This is why I tend to do my own work.

Only if I do not have the required and expensive tools or skills I will pay someone for work. The problem is that manufacturers are as if trying to ensure that this will not be the way. Also, in this day and age some things are unnecessary complicated.

    I started building electric bikes about a year ago, ive never had so much fun. My own personal bike is capable of 4x the legal limit, but i only go that fast in reasonable places, because i respect the hobby and i dont want other bikers to get a bad reputation

      Most path limits top out at 15 mph, if you can go 60 mph that isn't really an e bike any longer. E moped, e motorcycle realistically.

    I foresee that sometime soon there will be geo subscriptions for your vehicle. That is, if you want to drive in a specific city or neighborhood you will have to buy a subscription and if you don't you will get a ticket or your car will be disabled remotely.

    The "anti freedom" stuff is much older than EVs. A while ago, before EVs where really a thing (tinkerers and people that where willing to pick up a soldering iron had their vehicles). The company i used to work for, had BMWs as their company fleet. The car refused to start in front of a railway crossing, no message, no indication. Just wont budge after stopping for a train to pass.
    Since the company had a fleet, i just called the hotline. They told me, they already knew about the problem and someone is on their way. The service man opened a panel on the drivers door, exchanged a board with who knows what on it and the car would turn on again no problem. Sure I was in a place where they could get to me quickly, but there was nothing inherently wrong with the car - and I could just have drove the 1 km to the companies parking lot. Their self-diagnostic stuff could just have notified the contractor to replace the board later. But without noticing the driver, that company decided to not allow the car to be operational any more - until they replaced a board which was had nothing to do with safely operating the vehicle.

    4:40 this argument is exactly why I don't own an e-bake in the UK.
    15.5mph top speed limit and 250w motor limit.
    Not enough speed or acceleration to achieve being ignored by traffic, so you get overtaken by idiots who hate cyclists. High speeds are dangerous, but not as dangerous as being hit by 2T of steel box trying to squeeze past.

    Grin Technologies are great, I remember them sending me out a replacement cover for the CAv2 (the buttons became unglued after 7 years) overseas to me for free - no shipping cost, no nothing. A very different experience than most companies when you ask for a replacement part! Oh and em3ev are great too, I still use one of their battery packs that they made 13 years ago.

    So well said. I know exactly what you mean after I built my own 2kW ebike 8 years ago, and painstakingly sifted through thousands of laptop battery packs to get enough good cels together to make a 2kWh battery pack.
    8 years later, I still love it to bits!

    My Gen1 LEAF is an actual electric car. It's got none of the "features" of a lot of the cars have today and I love it. All the internal controls are buttons - not a single touch screen in the whole thing. Seat warmers are free of any subscription. The most connectivity it has is BT with the radio.
    It looks a little weird (for that slippy aero) so it's unpopular, but it's the only car I can see myself driving until we (hopefully) get past this syncing phase. OBD2 port's a little weird, but someone fortunately reverse engineered the output and it's entirely manageable.

      If there is any interface that I need to operate while I can't look at the buttons, it shouldn't be a touch screen. I can operate my light switch while the light is off. I can change the settings on my monitor while keeping my eyes on the screen area, I can change channels on my radio while keeping the eyes forward. I can skip a song on my media player while keeping it in my pocket.

    I'm planning on building an electric bike over the next year, or so. I started building and flying quadcopters last year, and sometimes I am not sure which I like more, building or flying.     I like the restrictive and app controlled stuff on rentals. Downloading an app and seeing a map of twelve rental options near me and grabbing one and unlocking it with my phone and then it charges my PayPal and I just drop it on the floor when I'm done with it. It's very convenient for me to be able to find them and use them and not need anything except my phone for it. Ten years ago I visited Cologne and they had rental bikes that my university bus/train pass was valid for so I could grab any of those bikes and use them for 30 minutes for free, and then some cheap amount if I used it longer than that. They weren't EVs yet but it was still amazing to find them with an app and unlock them with an app. I've used e-scooters that worked similarly. Haven't seen it with actual e-bikes yet but it would be weird if it wasn't a thing.
    But for my own property? Absolutely not. Maybe GPS tracking to log my routes and also find it if it's stolen, a nice lock and a nice key, and none of the online connection stuff, except for the GPS features to be remotely accessible, and that's just a personal choice I'm willing to make so I can recover it if it gets stolen. Heck, just throw in a couple phone parts and having it show up on Google's "where's my phone?" would be enough.

      Also for rental it is useful that if you steal that car/scooter, they can turn if off remotely.
      But having that "feature" on something you bought is just wrong.

    I was always in the camp that ebikes are for old people but that changed. Ebikes are a game changer for commuting. I can do the 25min bike ride without coming to work sweaty. Makes every day better

      For me the best part is I have the confidence to bike to my heart's content without having to worry about having enough energy to get home if I get too tired I just use the throttle till I feel like pedaling again a couple weeks ago I went on a 40 miles bike ride I would never have had the confidence to go that hard if it wasn't for the reassurance that I could at any time stop pedaling twist the throttle and zip back home if I wanted to

    This same "lockout" problem has been around ever since the Digital Rights Management concept was implemented heavily in the 1990s.
    It used to be a software issue, but now they are tying hardware to software in such a way that the software issue has become a hardware issue.
    People are only blaming EVs for it because it's the first *real* mainstream product in which the replacement cost is greater than the repair cost.
    laptop or phone stops working? buy another one.
    can't do that with an $80,000 item quite as easily. (in other words, it actually effects the pocketbook of the upper middle class and higher).

    I agree that it's not that EV's are bad. It's that companies are just using the paradigm shift as a way to do as they please.
    I'm thinking about building my own eBike powered off of drill batteries. But for some reason I couldn't build one, I'd buy one from a company that doesn't require me to use an app to ride it. If I really wanted to lock it I'd just use a D shackle lock and loosen the stem a bit when I park it so if someone does try to cut the D shackle and take off, it'd be hilarious to watch.
    As far as the anti-repair moves, I thoroughly believe that even if the shift was to a different fuel source instead of EV's, these companies would still try a lot of the same crap.

    i love the point you bring about ebikes beeing MORE safe with more power..
    i stopped using my 3grand ebike because it was simply not fast enough for the city, it was simply too dangerous.
    now i am driving around with a 2 ton ev, much safer
    not so much for the environment though

      There's a tradeoff though. I didn't feel safe going 28mph on most of the roads because they're shitty roads, and the cars were still going faster anyway (despite speed limit: 25mph). I'm not sure if I'd trust the bike at higher speeds to not have issues, especially if the weather is suboptimal or the road is littered with potholes. My ebike having iffy connections between components didn't help inspire confidence either, and since it was a fancy battery-in-frame one it's not terribly repairable.
      I went back to just using my trusty single speed that does ~15mph usually. If I do try an ebike again, it'll be a DIY setup that I understand.

    Yeah, one of the big concerns I have about owning a Tesla is that the app you use to control remote features goes through Tesla servers with no option to do it through a server of your choice. If Tesla decides to be evil in some way or the company goes belly up, what happens to the app? I don't know how the app and car actually talk to each other but it makes most sense that there's a server between them, and I think if you own a car you should be able to run that server yourself if you want to.

      The app itself *is reliant on Tesla’s servers staying up* for remote operation but the vehicle remains operable if you have a physical key or your phone already paired over Bluetooth.
      I’m still not a fan of how they Apple-ify servicing parts of the vehicle that aren’t the brakes & tires but I’m not worried my car will be a dud in case the company goes belly-up or has some insane server outage.

    I bought an Engwe e-bike earlier this year and to be honest I didn’t really even think of any of this. However my Engwe is started with a mechanical key same as a car/scooter/motorcycle. One thing I did notice in the package is that they provided the manual for the controller along with all of the ‘secret’ menus that I could use to remove the speed cap, add fine grained motor controls, etc. Unlocked the bike is absolutely a hoot to ride and I’m now a fan of e-bikes. When the day comes and I want to sell my e-bike, it will be easy since I just hand the new owner the keys and off they go.

    i bought an old razor mini dirt bike off a friend, stripped it of all the original components, and replaced them with my own. i can easily reach 30 mph maybe 45 if i tried, and all for less than $1500. no drm whatsoever, except for a physical key with no transponder. its small, relatively light, and costs very little to power, as its electric. folks, this is the definition of freedom, and i agree with every word louis says.

    My Fiat 126 comes with a manual that includes maintenance guide and diagrams for repair/adjusting. Essentially everything what is needed to keep it running.

    There is a corralation between EVs(and other devices) and anti-repair measures. It is just so much easier to design products that are anti repair, when main functions rely on software. Basically modern technologies enabled more anti-repair measures. They do not have to exist, but companies want to implement them, because they think it protects them and not you the customer.

      It's just a way for companies to sell you less for the same price. When as a government policy you make money increasingly worthless, companies seek to cut corners to stay afloat. Shoddy quality, planned obsolescence, ridiculous packaging, reducing your rights... all means to make more $$ without (or actually in addition to) raising prices. And market mechanisms that correct that are increasingly knocked out because business is concentrated in monopolies.

    I work at (a) FedEx. I did some OT in the 102+ Tx heat and when I got to my last stop I got out of my truck to find out where this hospital wanted me to deliver their stuff. I got back to my truck to move it to that area and it doesn't turn on. It's a gasoline Ford e650 with a boxtruck on the end owned by a rental company.
    Long story short, my managers forgot to renew the rental fee that morning and my truck was remotely disabled.
    While my managers were getting that figured out and I wanted to be proactive instead of baking in the driver's seat, plus I still needed to make service on my time commitment and before the place closed so I used a flatbed dolly to take my 40+ boxes from the side parking lot to the opposite side of the hospital. Shout out to the administrator that supplied me with water and gatorade and didn't lock the main door on me (otherwise I'd have to drag all this stuff even further).

    For folding electric scooters, Voro Motors is very repair and customer friendly. The only key it has is a physical one that came with it when I bought. All of the functions/parameters on the controller are there, even though a little cryptic. They sell any parts and even have videos show how to replace and fix parts on it.

    I appreciate the video just for the mentions of some decent e bike companies. EVs live in a weird headspace for me. I love modifying and fixing my IC car and fundamentally EVs are simpler in design. So they could be just as good if not better to own and work on if it wasnt for all the baricades in soft/hardware. For instance I really like the companies doing E conversions of older cars and what that promises for weekend mechanics in the future

    I have a Radpower e-bike, and I really like it. But I'm not really a tinkerer, use it as a daily, or live in a busy city. The 0-20 accel time is fine for my needs, but I see how if you were trying to navigate New York or similar you'd need a lot more customization. The website has a fair amount of parts available but not everything. Can't get the controller or hub motor. Maybe if you called them, I don't know.
    I just use it to go on general rides and bike paths. I can't tune it or anything, but it also doesn't use any sort of wireless connectivity. It's just a power button. Pretty simple.

    I have an ebike and when I saw this news this was the first time I have ever heard of an app powered ebike. Most of them are not like that. I don't have to get it repaired by the company that made it or anything like that either. I had no idea people had this misconception.     Even their non EV is a piece of thrash, it's build with vendor specific parts, which are already a pain to get a hold of...
    They wanted to be the Apple of bikes, in a way they were, because they were quite popular in the more progressive circles, but they went too niche.

      I once came across a creator who, throughout the whole 10+ minute video did the out of focus and back to focus transition effect on a 10-second loop. Needless to say, I couldn't watch, as my eyes started to hurt after a minute hunting for focus. Unfortunately, the topic in the video was interesting, so I still stayed.

    I remember one of my old friends bought one of those sketchy chinese pre-fab electric motorcycles (just generic parts slapped in a frame that looked like a motorbike). Since it was all generic off the shelf parts, whenever something would fail (the original breaker was not triggering correctly, just overheating and shutting down for 30 minutes) we could order another off the shelf breaker. We could replace all the wiring, upgrade the batteries, jailbreak the governor to allow it to go faster or in his case, be able to go up hills without overheating the breaker, even upgrade the motor. Everything was off the shelf and it was great.

    I also do not like factory made e-bikes. They are very expensive with overpriced batteries! For example BOSCH battery costs 2x more ($/Wh) than the same for DIY.
    For example 750Wh battery costs ~750 euro. Meanwhile 1200Wh in Polly DP9 case using SAMSUNG 21700-50E cost me ~550 euro!

    My neighbor got with his second hand car 230V EVSE set at 16A, and internals can do 32A. As cars is imported from Norway, I asked the Norvegian office how to set the current.
    They said that I can not do it, but EVSE has to be set to, connected to the internet and user account (for tracking energy usage and scheduling charging at low rates), and checked by their technitian (which they do not have in my country), before current rate can be changed.
    So I opened it, seen that it has all the hardware for 3 phase charging but not 3 phase cable connected. So I spent 10$ on 3 phase cable and household socket and kept it software locked at 16A. Not it charges 3x as fast and does 11kW.
    EVSE is not connected to the Internet. I lookee up on their website, 3 phase model costs almost the double 1 phase one.

    You are very correct. For years now IC cars have had electronic throttle and steering assist. The sensor and technology to make a self driving car is completely separate from the drivetrain and could be implemented on an IC car.

    There is one giant caveat, Here (Belgium, and probably many other EU countries) you CANT make a bike yourself just like that and drive around with it. Here there's a 25kph(16mph) limit for the normal electric bikes you buy and a 45kph(27mph) limit for "speed bikes", these "speed bikes" require a license plate AND a drivers license.
    Also all (electrically) motorized vehicles need to be checked and conform to regulations and limitations (such as no higher speed than 45kph and max 4kW)...
    If I were to make this kind of bicycle myself I need to get a certificate for series production (yes, to make a whole batch of bikes). Which I can't do since I need to be a recognized producer of bikes.
    So legally, you cannot do any of this as stupid as it sounds. Or risk a fine costing you the price of the bike itself... I wish it was different

    Woah, I know quite a few people with electric bikes, and none of them have anything like what you describe. That is truly dystopian, and the worst part is, I'm not even surprised.
    Saved this video for future reference, in case my bike ever breaks down - thank you!
    Regarding the speed limit, I actually understand why it exists, at least in my (European) country.
    Upon reaching certain specs, you would be riding something akin to a motorcycle (there are some very low horse power ones here that require a lesser license). That would mean regulation regarding license plate, turn signals, regular inspections, taxes etc.
    What's more, there are plenty of bike-only lanes here. Motorcycles aren't allowed on there, so why should something that's basically an electronic motorcycle be allowed? E-bikes get to go on there, due to their lesser power (and, I suspect, because the government is actively encouraging their use).
    All that very well may not apply to the US, of course, and for that matter, I might be mistaken on some or all of it. That being said, those things sure are handy to have around - the dumb ones, at least.

    I feel the same about my first AR-15, which I chose to build as opposed to just going to a store and buying already built.
    I searched forums and UA-cam on how to build one, what parts I would need, what the parts do, etc.
    I then took my time and found the parts I wanted and waited for sales and bought them. I then started putting it altogether, piece by piece and now I have MY rifle.
    I enjoyed the process immensely and, despite being a total Fudd, it is amazing that I can go into a gun store and request specific parts for my rifle that deal with the build and the gun store sales person doesn't know what I'm talking about because he or she has always just bought prebhilt rifles and MAYBE knows how to clean it and lubricate it, but beyond that hasn't a clue.

    I think the issue with electric stuff is its become the beachhead/trojan horse/pebble before an avalanche of DRM hell.
    So now "we" can't trust anything and lash out like an abused animal at anything that smells like change.
    Heck, the recent Steam update that was touched on last week. I loaded Steam, saw the UI change, and immediately knew I was going to have issues with it. Sure enough, that's what has happened. Self fulfilling maybe, but still where I am in life. And I'm betting its not just me.

    I am not a big fan of all thing EV, but what Louis says makes perfect sense about freedom on control regardless of the means of propulsion. I can't imagine how people get along out in the Mountain West where cell and data coverage is spotty at best.

    I went to a company called Lekker.
    They took one of their designs and then modified it to work as an E-Bike by adding a bafang power train and controller, the gearing is Shimano gearing and tektro brakes
    Anything that breaks I can go back to the manufacturers and get replacements, or I can upgrade any of them
    No stupid app. A simple button to turn it on/off with a simple key to release the battery.

    I think a lot of people dislike EVs because of the way they are being introduced. There's the issues with privacy, ownership and subscriptions with the actual cars (which is now a problem with regular cars too), and then there's the way that many governments are trying to force people to get EVs. My country is literally banning petrol cars from 2030.

      No it wont. The transition cant be made that quickly, politicians will just extend the time line. Its just not possible for all countries to switch simultaneously because of the resource and manufacturing constraints. It is possible to talk about it though because politicians unlike the mining and manufacturing industries are not constrained by reality.

      My country also plans to ban any gasoline cars starting in 2035 in order to meet the "net zero carbon policy" in 2050 and as late as 2060
      But I'm sure if those stupid subscription thing never exist, the transition to EV would be much faster

    I actually somewhat disagree with you on your last point about unlimited speed on an electric bike. While I understand that it works great for you and I can only imagine how fun riding such a bike would be, this kind of thing only really works if you aren't sharing your bike-lane with other people.
    Here in germany, iirc, electric bikes are limited to going 25kmph. For any speed above that, you will no longer get motor assistance. If you're bike allows you to go significantly above that, it is classified as an electric motorbike or mofa or something like that. This means it would require a license plate and so on. And while that might sound kinda dumb, I do actually think this makes sense when you have proper bike infrastructure and usage. It would be really annoying to be on some bike path as a normal biker and constantly have people rushing by going 15-20 kph faster than would be doable on a normal bike.
    And in my opinion, equating this "freedom" with cars is a really bad argument. Because on a bike, the expectation is, that on flat ground, everybody will naturally go between 20 and 30 kph. This means there are no speed limits necessary, because, except for the few professional bycicle athletes, no one can really sustain going at any significantly higher speed. The same thing simply cannot be said about cars. Therefore they require speed limits, licenses etc.
    An electric bike should make biking easier, not automatically transform it into a different category of vehicle. And the off-the-shelf variants should reflect that. If you want to make your e-bike go as fast as proper motorvehicles, go for it, but don't be surprised if it gets classified as such.

      @@uis246 E-bikes are designed with a motor cut-off speed to make them kid compatible. Adults who need/want faster speeds should be looking at vehicles that require a license.
      People have been sold the lie that an E-bike is an E-motorbike that doesn't have the license(and other legal) requirements.

    I've built an ebike and everytime I look at prebuilt ones now I struggle see anything which is open enough to my satisfaction.
    This is anecdotal but while waiting to have bafang my hub laced at the local bike shop 3 bosch mid-drive bikes were brought in with different error codes. I will likely now not ever buy a off-the-shelf ebike.

      Bafang systems have error codes too. There are always going to be people who see an error code and look into how to fix it themselves versus people who see an error code and immediately bring it into the shop.
      My first bike gave me an error code the first day I got it; turned out one of the brake signal wires didn’t have quite enough slack and when you turned the bike the brake signal wire would disconnect. Figured that out on my own, but I know people who would have brought it into a shop.

      @@GreySim You're right error codes are useful, I get the impression that at least one of the bikes motors was not operable.
      I'd be curious to know people's experiences with bosch systems on cargo bikes and such.
