    You're on point. Many musicians today do it for the fame and fortune and I understand making a living, but the idea of performing for the love of the art is getting lost. Do you think Metallica is putting out new music and touring because they need the cash? No, it's for the love of what they do. Do what you truly love and you'll never work a day in your life.

      Metallica is my favorite heavy metal band of all time. Since they started their journey they have been through a ton of devastating moments that could've stopped them as with other bands but it hast. They always come out moving forward and I believe it's the love of what they do that drives that unwaivering strength and dedication to keep them rocking.

    Hetfield's very metal growl works surprisingly well in a ballad. Gives it sincerity and muscle.

    You're completely right about modern guitar solos. It's all about technique now. All the emotion has gone out of guitar playing. I blame UA-cam. There have been millions of videos posted by bedroom shredders, and it's become an almost competitive thing that's resulted in a generation of guitarist clones who are unbelievable technicians but have no soul.

    So glad you did this one, probably in my top 5 Metallica list. Great lyrics, beautiful arrangement & James' vocals were perfect. That acoustic is just spot on, I could've had another minute of it. (You blushing when talking about your Janes Newsted crush was adorable!😄)

    8:45 That's a very good call, about the guitar solos. Very true. It's kind of all been done already and there's not much more a new/young guitarist can bring to the table that we haven't experienced. I realized this 24 years ago, when starting to learn to play guitar; no matter how technically-advanced you are, it's very tough to be an original...

    • @damioncollins6097
      @damioncollins6097 Рік тому +1

      It’s fine not being original. But you don’t have to do something similar to someone else when it comes to solos. Modern day solos lack feeling, emotion. It’s just mindless shredding. Solos back then told stories. They don’t do that today

    • @heavenhelp1982
      @heavenhelp1982 Рік тому +1

      @@damioncollins6097 That's a very good point but I would also say that it applies to non-shred solos, typically hiding behind special-effects pedals. I heard a decent band the other day (Salvation Jayne) that are song-oriented, rather than technique-obsessed. Good vocalist. But the lead guitarist is so derivative; all I heard was obvious influences like The Cure, the Smiths, U2 and loads of other bands who did it better. So many new bands/acts have this issue to overcome.

    • @AECH_CH
      @AECH_CH Рік тому

      @@damioncollins6097 This all very depends on what you listen too. I can enjoy a lot of guitar solos, even today with newer bands. But yeah the "golden age" of guitar solos is over.

    I think it’s very cool you actually know the name of that album’s producer, because that kind of detail never seems to be noted by most fans. To me Bob Rock has gotten great sounds on his records, from the instruments to the vocals. And, inside story: before these album sessions, James hadn’t quite known how to sing properly. But he told Rock he wanted to do melodic singing on a couple of tracks. So Bob gave him some vocal lessons and instruction in the studio. The result is his lead vocals on this song and others.

    I still have the Black album on vinyl though I don't have a turntable anymore, such an iconic album imo. BTW, checked out your "Silly Milly' video, loved it, I was born in the 60's and it has that wholesome, catchy flavour, Bravo! Will definitely check out for more from you.
    My favourite band at the moment is The Warning, 3 sisters from Mexico that absolutely rock, would love to see your reaction to them. They don't have any bad songs but my faves are Evolve, Animosity, Choke and the cover of Enter Sandman they did in collaboration with Alessia Cara (its the first track on Metallica's Blacklist Project album).

    If u think the members of Metallica look upset or stressed out or p+++ed off in the video... it's because they were! 😂
    When Metallica went into the studio in 1990 - '91 to work on the self-titled 'black' album, the problems began right away when James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich had 2 different ideas for the record and kept clashing. Producer Bob Rock tried to keep the peace, but he was dragged into the conflicts as well... Kirk Hammett (lead guitar) and Jason Newsted (bass) also wanted their input into the album and were frustrated as well.
    James would reportedly work during the day, and then Lars came in at night to override his work... and this went on for months. The infighting got so bad that James admitted that they had "forgotten what they came to do... to write and record music..."
    "Nothing else matters" was a track James had written as a love song for his then-GF, and Kirk was like, "Whoa! James wrote a song about his girlfriend!"... Classical composer Michael Kamen (who had worked w/ Pink Floyd and Queensryche) was contacted to put strings on the track, so he recorded an orchestra and sent the tapes - When Kamen heard the mix, he couldn't hear the orchestra very well... and when he confronted the band, they told him that his string track was played isolated in the studio and called 'Nothing else matters' (elevator version).
    When the sessions for the 'black' album were finished in 1991, the damage was already done - Lars, Kirk and Jason were all handed divorce papers by their then-wives... James and his girlfriend were history. So, without the family obligations anymore, the band launched a massive tour in the fall of 1991 and did not stop touring until 1994.

    Millie, you need to understand something: "Every Bad Boy has a soft side." That was actually a "tagline" for an album compilation back in the 90s. I can't remember the name off the top of my head, but it was an entire album of "Power Ballads" from various artists. It was a good compilation, too. Maybe someone else remember the name of it?

      @@Daskaren You might check in with the latest developments in AI, friend. It's shocking. But my point is more general about boring song structure, if you can even call it that, when there is one melody that never changes. It's the artists themselves, that are writing boring music with computers. They could instead write music that isn't boring, and serves a purpose beyond Tik Tok dance background music.

    Their recent performances of songs done on the Jimmy Kimmel show LIVE a couple weeks ago ... as a week-long chat and performances and chat of them today you can view on UA-cam with quickly gaining 100s of 1000s of views. How GREAT James still sounds and the band can perform hitting 60+ of age ... not just singing, but playing and singing metal yet today. Also with the release of a new album of new songs that may not break sales records.... but will do well as last I heard was nearing top 20 in sales. Keeps them relevant to today's generations and sealing their Iconic status as unmatchable in still able to perform at a high level in live concerts. I recommend others view those Jimmy Kimmel live performances on UA-cam and clearly proves iconic levels still in performing as a group.

    You're absolitely right about guitar solos now days and I think most listeners are aware of it. Its funny though. In the past it was nearly a requirement and therefore making it predictable and redundant, but even if it was, you can here the hard work, creativity and bared emotion they wanted to express in those tracks.
    The solo may have once been obligatory, but if it was of an overall high quality, it never sounded that way.
