  • One of a series of 25 heavy rail guns produced for the Wehrmacht by Krupp of Essen. Developed as the K5 series from 1934 onwards, the first test firing took place in 1936.
    Statistically, the gun had an overall length of 30 metres, increased to 32 metres in the firing position, and a weight of 218 tons.
    The barrel had a length of 21.5 metres (70'8"), a calibre of 283 mm (11.1") and an elevation of 50 degrees.
    The shell weighed 255 kg, and the range was in excess of 40 miles.

    My grandfather had been born and raised in the Essen area, but then left Germany a few years before WW1 began. Anyway, what a great effort went into modeling these trains to scale, and I'm impressed with the result (if not the wars in which these guns were used.)

      Craftsmanship is definitely not dead. Nor is pride of work of detailing. Thank you for showing. P.S. I built a model of a K5; Anzio Anne some years back. Made a dinoramma in scale with German WWII vehicles from Minitank. Gave it to a hobby store as a display because we moved out of state and it would have never survived the trip.

    With the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) 2010, the US Army Ordnance
    School was moved to Ft Lee, Virginia. All the weapons associated with
    the museum were moved to Ft. Lee. The captured Leopold Railway Gun is on Display
    on the Installation, which is open to the public.

    Should be. Gun is Hornby-Rivarossi HR6026 "Schweres Eisenbahn Geschütz Leopold". Try the Importers for UK, Ontracks.
    Locomotive is Roco Br 50. Try Arcadia models, Shaw, near Oldham. They may be able to help you with the others, Liliput Reichkonferenzwagen and the Norwegian Sleeping Car (repainted from the brown with added decoration).

    Very nice video and 99% accurate: the brown freight car has an UIC 10-digit computer-number. Another question is if bridges along the route would support the weight of the two guns coupled together? I would expect the guns should be separated by at least a couple of empty freight cars - or the passenger cars for the staff?

    I don't suppose you have got a 'Dora' railway gun in HO scale? Would like to see this sort of detailed featurette about those monsters! Also what a great demonstration of the precision performance and detailing of the train models we see. Especially the slow speed control of the side view around 2:30 ... Roco always were a top class manufacturer although it was Fleischmann who originally acted as the first 'excellence' benchmark in HO scale back in the 1970s IIRC.

    • @letzterinstanz
      @letzterinstanz  9 років тому +1

      Rumple Stiltskin Hello Rumple Stiltskin. Thank you for your kind comment. Scale of railway when displaying continental trains is 1:87(HO); when displaying British trains is 1:76 (OO - which means British trains are slightly bigger but run on track gauge 4 ft 6 inches. It is an anomaly that has been present since the beginning of railway modelling)!

  • @raybarker9201
    @raybarker9201 7 років тому +7

    Nice railway but the rail guns cannot fire cross tracks thay not built to recoil thay only capable of firing in a straight line, all that metal and men plus Material to lob a shell 30 to 40 k is not practical that why they only used a few times special track and a vast amount of time to set it all up things in short supply to the German forces,

      Yes, I'm amazed too. I think 4:3 vision will do. After all, it's only a toy train. Perhaps not the spirit the majority of viewers have been inspired by.
