    Looking forward to watching this project, ive just started reloading, I’m hoping to work up some accurate hunting loads in 243 and 308, videos like this helps with understanding the process 👍

    My .22-250 loved both the 53 grain Hornady V max and 53 grain Nosler Varmagedon over 36 grains Imr 4166. Used Winchester and Nosler brass. All seat depths were 2.400. Was always a cloverleaf group and 3600 fps.Rifle was a Savage 12 VLP. Not sure if you can acquire these bullets and powder. But something to try if you can. Imr 4166 is the alternative to Varget and RL15 in the USA. An updated Imr 4064 by some claims.

      Forgot to mention all my loads were developed with Winchester Large Rifle Standard primers. Some people claim a huge difference in primer brand but I haven’t seen it. If brass, powder and bullet are equal I’ve seen minimal to zero difference in velocity, point of impact or accuracy when comparing standard primers from Winchester,Remington, Federal and CCI. Changes might be more significant if one brand were magnum and one were standardized. Just my experience. Good luck and thank you for your videos.

    I have the same rifle blued steel. I placed it in an MTD XRS chassis and the thing is superb! I am shooting Hornady V-Max 40 grain bullets with Varget powder. The Hogue stock is trash, get a chassis system if you are looking for accuracy.

      G'day Jack. I might get a chassis for it one day, but this little project was to see what I could do with it on a budget; still working on my own skills and knowledge for now.

    can i suggest .22cal 55gr Nosler Varmint BT (orange) & 2206H 35.5gr that is also in a 1:12 twist barrell

    I have a Howa 1500 heavy barrel. My accuracy has been disappointing with 55 gr bullets. Research suggests the Howa has a 1:12 or 1:14 twist and don’t stabilize bullets over 53 gr that well. I’m going to try 50 gr and 53 gr to see if I do better. Finding reloading components in the States is challenging at this time. I want Nosler Partition and they are not to be had. I built my Howa with a Boyd stock, glass bedded it. Bought it asa barreled action.

      @practicalnottactical  2 роки тому

      Hi Carl if you have a 1:14 it probably won’t stabilise 55gr but should shoot 50gr like a laser. You can see my results with the 22-250 1:12 barrel.

    I'd try a 50 grain bullet. Howa is a 1-12 twist. I have a #3 Ruger 1-14 twist and had to go under 50 grain bullet weight with that slow twist. Just a thought

      G'day mate. During the continued load development, I quite easily found a very accurate 50gr load, however I was always wanting to use at least 55gr in this rifle. If you haven't already, check out part two of this load development video series.

    Hey mate really enjoy your knowledge regarding hand loading your own ammo, have you shot any known good factory rounds to see how good that howa is ?
    I own a couple in 243 and 223 both capable of sub .5’ at 200m with ADI or outback rounds..
    Only reason I ask is I am looking at purchasing the exact piece less the scope you’ve acquired

      Thanks for your support Nikolai. No I have not tried any factory ammo in this rifle, I just don't bother when I can tailor a round to match perfectly by hand loading. Wait till I upload part 2 video on this rifle, it has some nice results.

    very interesting video P n T , could I ask a question off subject plz , could you point me in the right direction to find a rear action screw for my 1895 Spanish Mauser cavalry carbine , any information would be gratefully appreciated . cheers Shane

      A few years ago we in Australian could just buy the small parts from websites in US, however, all of them now will not ship any part, even a screw, internationally. There are websites like Brownells and Liberty Tree Collectors that have new parts available. Brownells Australia list the part you need as "out of stock" so I would contact them and ask to have the required part sought from Brownells in the US. Alternatively you could advertise on the online gun sites, or ask the question on the Enoughgun forum if anybody has one or knows where to get it. The last resort is to have a gunsmith make one for you. The same receiver screws fit in all 1893-1896 small -ring Mausers, so don't just look for a Spanish one.

      @@shanedobson6376 I bought my Spanish carbine from Southeast Firearms at Sorell while holidaying in Tassie. It was the weirdest experience I've had at a gunshop when they wouldn't let me physically touch the gun because I didn't have my licence on me. I had to inspect the rifle I wanted to buy with the salesperson holding the rifle over the counter in front of my face. Seemed like a good way not to sell many guns.

    G'day, I have the Mk5 and wish to get a magazine for it but I dont think the typical Howa 1500 short action stuff fits it, so can you advise me on what floor plate to buy that takes a magazine for this gun. I am learning but struggle to find any advice on this one? Hope you can help, cheers

    • @practicalnottactical
      @practicalnottactical  Рік тому

      Hi Rob, I will assume you mean the Weatherby Mk5. I did a quick search and learned that the Mk5 is not the same as the Vanguard / Howa so you are right, the Howa 1500 magazine conversion by Legacy Sport will not fit into the Mk5. I had a Vanguard at one point with the LS conversion kit and I thought it was rubbish anyway. It was all plastic and the magazine often fell out of the rifle. A quick search for "Weatherby Mk5 magazine conversion" suggests that your options are limited and a little expensive, but there are a few manufacturers supply a mag conversion kit. These will likely all be from US and even more expensive in Australia.

    Are dingoes protected in Australia?

    • @practicalnottactical
      @practicalnottactical  2 роки тому +1

      The laws are very contradictory. There a Biosecurity laws that make it an obligation for every land owner to control dingos and wild dogs, but there are also Conservation laws protecting dingos in "protected areas" like National Parks.

    You seem to like these 22-250’s. Good buying with that barrelled action. Have you tried 2206-H powder. I get good results out of both my 22-250’s with it pushing 55 grain V-Max and the Sierra Game Kings. I’ll be watching to see how this one pans out. Cheers.

    • @practicalnottactical
      @practicalnottactical  2 роки тому +1

      G'day 2 Clicks Up. No I haven't tried 2206H powder as most of what I read on the internet suggests the most success with 22-250 comes with slower burning powder. I know there are plenty of people having success with 8208 which is an even faster burning powder than 2206H. The reason I am reluctant to use the faster powders is probably my experience with the accuracy and consistency coming with filling the case capacity. The 22-250 can take about 41gr of powder so I prefer to fill the case with bulkier, slower burning powders and seat the bullet close to the powder column.
      My reloading journey has had me chasing dream loads of max book speeds only to be defeated by everything I try. Accurate loads for a particular bullet only come when the right stability and consistency is achieved; this equates to matching the barrel twist to the right pressure behind the bullet. Fighting against what that bullet needs to achieve stability and consistency only increases my knowledge in what not to do. But that's part of the enjoyment with hand loading, gaining that education in what works and what doesn't.

    • @2clicksup910
      @2clicksup910 2 роки тому

      @@practicalnottactical yes there’s plenty of rainbows to chase, many of which are shrouded in frustration and disappointment. I might give the 2209 a crack one day just out of curiosity. My Ruger American has a 1:10 twist and my Weatherby Mark 5 has a 1:14 twist. How does the 2209 go in terms of noise? I know it really booms in the bigger calibers.

    • @practicalnottactical
      @practicalnottactical  2 роки тому +1

      @@2clicksup910 I know what you mean by the boom, I love the sound of my 7mm and 6.5mm Mausers with 2209 powder. The small bore 22-250 doesn't boom, it still is a loud shorter bang sound.
