  • 1. Tapped the steering column first incase it was the immobiliser acting up, didn't work
    2. Disconnected the battery for about a minute, didn't work
    3. Checked fuses, ask were fine
Did a continuity test with a multimeter, there was no continuous connection from battery to starter
    4. Traced the cable first from the battery which then goes to the starter. Noticed the broken cable which is common in these puntos
    Car starts now

FIXED! Thank you, this wire was torn at the lower connector, it had held on just couple of copper strands, rest of them was already green- it was happening on a longer period of time.

Hi this is the exact problem I have, a few months ago I just disconnected the corroded earth wire from starter and connected a new earth from battery to body. So this week its died, no cranking. Battery fully charged, continuity test okay etc. Did you get a permanent fix on the starter earth. Its pretty hard to replace the starter without a pit by all accounts.

I had the same issue with the other fiat with the same problem. I did a continuity test and it showed continuous current. I ended up changing the starter motor which was a ball ache, but after changing the starter, there was still no change. Checked the cable again, and upon proper inspection, realised just at the end, there were broken pieces on the earth cable not visible to the eye. Changed the cable and it started. The starter requires a lot of current, so if the earth cable is weak, it won't crank, if it does, it will sound like the battery is dying. The earth cable tends to burn out because it carries a lot of current, alternator to battery charge as well, just not the starter motor, so it's always loaded were as on other models it isn't the case. The best solution is to get a really thick cable. I'd suggest not buying the original fiat as they break, but get thicker cables you can retrofit neatly that can allow more current without resistance.
