Hi Jen! I found (and have since lost) a video of a gal cleaning dried lettering enamel out of lettering brushes by heating up motor oil (I think) with a lighter somehow, maybe on metal? alternating rubbing the brush in the heated oil and cleaning it in mineral spirits. Im somewhat new to lettering so I've been terrible at maintaining my brushes, my Kafka brush oil sits unused in my painting crate. Are you familiar with this method or do you have any different tips? Thanks so much!
Hi Jen. The clothespin idea is brilliant. Curious, how long can you leave the brushes suspended in mineral spirits? I’m just starting my striping journey and your vids are concise and soooooo helpful. Appreciated.
Didn't see this until now! You can leave it suspended for a bit ive done it accidentally overnight i dont recommend that but it didn't kill my brush, I leave them suspended while I get my next color ready all the time then clean ,oil and store away when I'm done painting with them
hiya i put my paper towels in a fire proof bin for awhile(a few months) and then i throw them out in the trash. as for spirits its quite the process! i do a lot of recycling of them, when ready to dispose of them you need to look up how to do it in your area every town/county is different some of them have a special facility you can bring them too for a small fee
Hi Jen, I haven't used my signwriting brushes for many years. I always used vaseline after cleaning them in white spirit. I have tried to clean the vaseline out with white spirit recently but it is not working. Have you got any suggestions? Perhaps they've been left too long? Thanks
Sorry I am only seeing this now, I use Vaseline too sometimes and never had issues cleaning out with mineral spirits. Keep at it maybe suspend the brush for a few mins then clean out
@@HotRodJenPinstriping Thanks Jen. Do you then use washing up detergent to clean out the white spirit? I never thought I would forget how to do something so simple as cleaning a brush!
@@felicityshine like in the video I use the 1st jar of spirits to clean my oils(including Vaseline, paint etc) then go on to clean the brush in the other 2 jars, so the 1st one will always be the dirtiest, use the jars in this fashion until the 1st one develops enough sludge to start a new 1st dirty wash jar, which could be a whole other video to make

I am not a pinstripe artist, but I do use pinstripe brushes in lettering and even nail art but I want to spread my wings and use them more in my art. I get mineral spirits but at the beginning you mentioned your brushes are soaked in oil before you start to clean them, Is this oil also mineral spirits or something else? I am always cleaning them and they are my favorite brushes and I want to treat them as well as they have treated me. Thank-you, have a lovely day. Rose.
the mineral spirits cleans the paint out if the paint is a oil based style paint like lettering enamels and the oil after each use is to keep the hairs nice and also if there was any left over paint residue from drying up in the heel of the brush which can cause hairs to break
I’ve heard not to use laquer thinner from somewhere... then I saw a Steve Kafka video and he went straight for the laquer thinner - ha! What are your thoughts - mineral spirits only? Thanks!!!
depending on the paint you are using you may end up needing Lacquer thinner to clean up, enamels can be cleaned with MS, and another good cleaner for them is enamel reducers. but if you are using Urethane paint to stripe with MS will not work you will need to use Lacquer thinner/ Urethane reducer.
It's nice to know how? But does anybody know how to pinstripe the side n length of a car.There are alot of videos on cleaning n designs.10 yrs later the same kind of videos but no pinstriping sides of cars 😢
