  • Are you studying in a WSET, MS, or SWE program and need to know about Malbec? Or maybe you just love Malbec and want to know more about its history? Dr. Laura Catena, Managing Director of Catena Zapata, Argentina’s premier winery, has created this video that within a few minutes will give you a solid foundation of useful information.
Malbec has risen to become one of the most popular grape varieties in the world, but this is not a new phenomenon, it’s been a long time coming. Did you know that Eleanor of Aquitaine might be considered its earliest celebrity endorser? Up until the mid-1800s Malbec was a key component in the best Bordeaux, but disappeared from the vineyards seemingly overnight. Why? One word: phylloxera! But how did this root pest cause Malbec's demise in Europe but lead to its resurrection in the new world? And how did Malbec get from France to Argentina? Why does Malbec thrive in the high-altitude, cool climate vineyards of Argentina? This video answers these questions and a lot more.
(Note: watching this video while tasting Malbec will enhance the learning experience!)
The Catena family has been making wine in Argentina for 115+ years. For more information on the wines and history of Catena Zapata, please visit www.catenawines.com/ And if you’re scientifically-inclined, catch up with what the Catena Institute of Wine is up to at www.catenainstitute.com/

The best explanation of the History of Malbec grapes and wines on UA-cam that I have seen and yes I have watched quite a few as I am a lover of fine Argentian Malbec wines , I would like to see a video on aeration of fine Malbecs , as for me it helps with a profound improvement of the taste and quality , but that might just be me .

Very informative video, lots of details about the history of Malbec I was not aware of. Beautiful history of how Malbec made it to Argentina. Have had many Catena Zapata wines and they are overall excellent. It is awesome how a single type of wine variety (Malbec) which was forgotten by France was adopted by Argentina and improved upon and has been made famous world wide with great quality and flavor. I hope to visit your vineyard in Mendoza in the next few years.

It was never forgotten by France; after all it is one of the premier Bourdeaux grapes, the five grapes associated with the area, but it is rare to have it presented as a single varietal from France. I have actually had a Cohors Malbec and it was absolutely amazing. The Catenas have perfected the grape, as the growing conditions in Argentina are perfect for Malbecs and I am eternally grateful for that.
