Forrest's enthusiasm is almost exhausting to watch! One quibble, though, when I was a biology student many moons ago, Cnidaria was pronounced with a silent "C" - maybe things have changed in marine biology, but I've never heard them referred to as snidaria before!
Amazing video. I dove Pennekamp some years ago. Like 45. I've only been able to read about it since, and from what I've heard, I'd be sad to see it today compared to my memory.
Thank you for checking in on Reggie for us. We all know that was the actual point of the visit.
An hour ago I was thinking of a joke I made up in 4th grade like 15 years ago that was "What animal helps you breath? A Whale: INwHALE EXwHALE". it was to my shock that an hour later I see the picture on this video say "This animal helps you breath"
It's like joking that the SI unit of a blue whale's diet is the Planck tonne.
It's going to be a dad joke isn't it?!?
That's no coincidence! Must be Jesus.
@@fukpoeslaw3613 you 🤡
@@fukpoeslaw3613Damn, beat me to it haha
Not sure I've ever cried at watching sea turtles just turtling, but for some reason I got all weepy eyed watching this. Thanks Forrest!
Your passion and enthusiasm is... I'm not even sure what word to use. Inspiring, exciting, infectious, uplifting, joyous?
You turn a video essay into an experience. Love the work, love the passion.
I came to make almost exactly the same comment. He's my favorite science communicator. Sorry Bill Nye, you've been usurped.
It's fun.
I know this may sound kind of lame, but I wasn’t allowed to watch bill nye for religious reasons. So I feel like Forrest is giving me, the childhood fun education I never had. And they kind of look alike.
Also, I love how at the very end, it’s just some girl gushing over Lizzo. Just an all around good video.
I had a similar experience. I don't think I was disallowed, but my evangelical christian upbringing caused me to scoff at science and not really appreciate it like I could have.
I'm glad we now have Forrest Valkai to experience that feeling we missed out on :D
Forest is absolutely a biology flavored Bill Nye, minus the bowtie and baby blue labcoat.
@@bow-tiedengineer4453 Imagine if they ever collaborated on something...
It is lame isn’t it? I also grew up religious but I did watch Bill Nye, at least in school we did. But It was before he started talking a lot about climate change which my parents don’t believe in lol I am so so so so happy Forest is doing what he’s doing and following in Bills footsteps! He’s really inspired me to want to go back to school at 36 years old! I want to be a biologist and I want to work in conservation.
Similarly, I was raised religious and homeschooled from 2nd to 12th grade so that I could be taught exclusively YEC curriculum.
I was allowed to watch Bill Nye but with constant reminders and denials from my parents that what the show was touting were lies and falsehoods.
Really kinda ruined it for me.
At least we have a wealth of stuff on UA-cam now. And my kids love Bill Nye the Science Guy.
If you ever have the opportunity to visit and/or support a local marine restoration project while on vacation, you should. They are doing amazing work!
Absolutely!
My 8 year old daughter and 5 year old son were absolutely captivated by your presentation style. From them: Thank you for putting so much work into this.
Aww, thats cute. I kinda wanna put aside my heavy doubts about Leftist-Content-Creators
and just recommeend you and your kids some nice, unpolitical Education-Channels,
so here we go: oversimplified, Tier Zoo, Bluejay, Zee Frankk, Veritasium.
Forrest, this video was _so fascinating._ I had no idea coral was so important. I think most people would probably be surprised by all the info in this video. I mean, we all have heard of bleaching events. We have all seen news reports of people purposefully sinking old ships or building underwater concrete structures for coral to grow on. But I never thought to ask why. I don't think most people are aware of how important coral is. I watched this video twice because it was so good. The thing about the airport runway and the sea turles is absolutely fascinating, too. Why can't we try to do all of our civil engineering this way? We won't always be able to but it should be the first priority when building new things. I mean, there's always environmental studies done before something is built. But that is usually done just as a mitigation step to make sure nothing is directly harmed. It isn't the same as engineers purposefully desiging a structure to benefit the environment. And that's what we should be doing on top of the environmental studies we already do before building something. Can this new bridge be built in a way that it benefits the water and animals it will be in contact with? That can go two ways:
No? Okay, at least we tried. Let's just make sure it won't harm anything.
Yes? Great! Let's do that!
Thanks for making this video. I found it endlessly fascinating.
The difference in the corals from my first visit in 2001 and second visit in 2023 were devastating. Thank you for showing us the people who are working to save the reefs and how to donate. I am doing my part and hope that others will join me.
these videos have helped me find the beauty and potential in life. they’ve given me a purpose and a reason to keep going. thank you, Forrest ❤
I was inspired as well.
Coral reefs are places of pure visual joy. There's always something happening, moving, hiding, and the colours are just about magical. Everybody loves a sea turtle and I've never heard anyone ever say, "ooh yuck, I hate coral". Why we evolved to love such places I can only imagine but we're so lucky on this planet.
They are busy cities
@@adrianmetzler2523 But prettier and every organism has a positive purpose, even if they go about it in ways that we'd be locked up for. Even the dangerous creatures are colourful. Portugese man o' war look like delicate glass blown figures with tentacles that trail beautifully and well, dangerously.
@@annakeye I remember finding them in Miami Beach and I was touching one a little bit knowing what they were or if they were dangerous. I did think they sting because I thought it was a jelly fish, so I was sort of cautious. The blue color they have is so gorgeous. You’re right, the coral world is a thousand times more beautiful than our civilizations
11:56 Forrest unironically saying, "Oh my Glob" makes me so unexplainably happy
I started looking into coral bleaching a little more deeply a few months ago and was just picking it up again over the last week. You kinda read my mind with this one.
I honestly learn more in one of Forrest's videos than I did in my entire high school science class. I wish I could've had a teacher like Forrest.
Thank you for helping to bring attention to the reefs. As an avid diver who doesn’t get to dive nearly often enough it’s incredible to see the efforts going into protecting these awesome creatures.
I couldn't get one guy to agree that humans are animals, he'll never agree coral are animals.
That's a fun argument to have with a dummy. Did you try asking him a) if we are not animals what are we? b) what do you think an animal is?
People tend to believe they know things just because they are familiar with them, it takes some questioning to make them realize they really are ignorant on X subject. As my sister used to say, if you can't define something you don't really know what that something is.
@@eleSDSU
Apparently, we're not animals because god created man ... animals are the mindless creatures like pigs rooting in mid and rotting vegetables. I suppose this guy used the phrase 'it was horrible, he was living like an animal' thus showing we don't start out as animals? I don't know, he was aghast at just the idea we're animals. Also, according to him, insects aren't animals either. Probably never got the whole species/animal/phylum thing.
Great video as always Forrest! And i’m happy to say that i’m part of that effort. I started a conservation and restoration project in the resort where I’m teaching, and there is nothing more exciting that watching the babycorals growing in the nursery!
Hopefully they’ll be able to repopulate the reefs it’d be lovely to see coral thriving again. I love how you included the alternative points. Thanks
As always, Forrest Valkai is the best science teacher!
Did they happen to show you the laser refraction trick to see if the coral is healthy or dead? I am not sure how widely it is used or if it is still used today but if you point a red laser (common laser pointer) at a dead sample of coral the laser refracts in a very interesting pattern through the skeleton of the coral, but if there is a healthy polyp colony in the sample it absorbs the light.
i have a question could you posibly grow the reefs like outside just like we saw in this video and then "transplant" them onto the skeleton of another reef after the bleaching event.
if so it could use the benefit of fast growth by any methon and avoid not having enough of the calsification.
This is exactly the idea of coral restoration using fragmentation, however it is not that simple. As forrest also alluded to, if you dont take away the stressor that caused the coral to die, just placing new coral wont fix the issues, it will only delay the inevitable. That is why coral reefs are under such tremendous pressure. Though i have to say the efforts in coral restoration are amazing and i myself have been lucky enough to experience a spawning event in a fully restored reef, which is to this day still one of the most amazing experiences i have ever had.
I’ve been running reef tanks for a decade. Nothing has humbled me more than the delicate complexities of a reef. We need to teach this as early as possible.
I’m a current student at the University of Gibraltar, studying to get my masters in marine biology. I appreciate people like you making this vital information available and easy to understand for large audiences, and I hope to do so as well soon. Also, you should come visit our program! I’d love to have a chat with you 😊
Forrest would even make the paint drying exciting.
Awesome video. I once thought about being a Marine Biologist, but I'm not good at math. Now i'm too old and not good at math lol.
This is FASCINATING. I'm gonna be honest that I haven't looked into too much biology so didn't know anything about coral reefs. My friend had a book at her house when we were around 11. It was a marine biology book. Childhood memory!
Gotta love the funny random moments in life. While I'm listening to forrest "You may have also noticed that corals are often so brightely colored that they appear to glow under the water. This is because --Low Battery--."
One of the best teachers and channel on UA-cam. Some of the best traits of a teacher are the ability to simplify, and inject comedy into the subject matter making learning fun and even addicting! You’re so loved Forrest! And should be up there with mr beast level channels.
Speaking of ocean heat, a recent study showed that hurricanes (and other tropical cyclones) pump heat far deeper in the ocean than originally thought, feeding to worse weather patterns due to a hotter ocean. See “Prolonged thermocline warming by near-inertial internal waves in the wakes of tropical cyclones” And, as we know, the increase in TC frequency is driven by global warming.
My boyfriend just went on a trip to Jamaica to participate in coral cleanup/planting!
I started watching you Forest after seeing your work with the atheist experience really love how your helping to educate people, as an avid scuba diver got to say that diving along a healthy reef can be some of the most beautiful wonders of our world. Keep all your great work education and aspiring people to grow and learn.
Being a coral farmer would be so cool
I love reefs
They’re my favorite biomes.
Oh how holy the sea.
Reggie just casually out here doing the lord's work.
Your enthusiasm for learning is an inspiration, and an absolute joy to listen to. Thank you for doing what you do!
Sometimes I feel like we're living in the future. This stuff is amazing. I have complete faith that humanity will solve climate change. In a couple centuries we'll live 99% sustainably, we won't have to kill animals for our food and we will bring back so much of the nature and wildlife we lost.
It's so nice to know there are people actually working this issue. Let's hope they don't get screwed over by rich ass holes who want to build parking lots in the ocean or something
with how hot the water is off of Florida this year, and the fact its likely just going to get warmer during this summer, the reefs there may be screwed because countries have been dragging their feet so long on trying to battle climate change.
Didn't know I needed this video in my life. So much love for the planet, sea creatures and us.
Thank you, your joy in and passion for the natural world reminds me of Sir. David Attenborough and his work exposing the general public to the life around us.
Thank You, you have one of the most upbeat extroverted on air personalities around. It is infectious listening to you talk.
I live in St. Thomas! I wish I could have met you while you were here.
Corals fighting in time lapse is brutal to watch
Imagine if we had to build villages with our families out of the bones of our ancestors. Metal af.
We very much do do that, just in a less materially literal way.
I would die for Reggie
Fantastic video, thanks! Minor lighting nitpick: the bright lighting of the edges of your background feels wrong somehow, as it creates this weird frame and seems to draw attention away from the center of the shot.
This video was so cool that I sent it to my mom!
This is why my name is MarineTeen because of the efforts that the ocean needs
This video made my day!! It was so educational! Thanks for what you do Forrest!!
This is honestly the best video i have ever watched explaining global warming and the effects man can have on it
Its never been made so clear and simple to understand
Thank u very much i will be showing this video to my children
And as a resident of the grate barrier reef i will do my best to direct anyone that ask for more info to this video
Never stop being the contagiously optimistic person you are. I was watching with a smile on my face the whole time.
I also wonder how hard would it be to sequester all that carbon just so we can reduce the ocean acidity?
Even if we could, why would we sequester the CO2 if we are just going to keep dumping more and more? This conservationist efforts are irrelevant as long as capitalism keeps creating and perpetuating incentives to destroy the environment.
The more I watch Forest videos the more I worry people are falling for this optimism trap, where people are investing a lot of hard work into something that doesn't solve any of the issues and is distracting from the real problem, which is not biological nor scientific but economic.
Coral dying is a symptom, not the disease.
That little turtle was so cool!! I have a photo of me nose to nose with giant sea tutrle bigger than me scooba diving around 40 feet deep.
Keep up the excellent work, Forrest!
Good video! Thanks for the info.
Amazing!
Man this is exactly the kind of thing I find really cool about science
This is amazing, thank~you SO much!
That was amazing.
Thank you.
Amazing video Forrest!
So many people think that anything sessile is a plant! We need more attention on and awareness of sessile animals :(
Thanks for the video :)
Been looking forward to this! And it lived up to expectations!
Such a great video. Thank you.
Since you mention colony creatures, this is my opportunity to plug an episode of Star Trek: The Animated Series called, "Bem."
That is all. There was an episode of a little-known 1970's animated Star Trek series that featured a colony creature who is a bipedal humanoid.
i wish Forrest was my Biology teacher
This is so relevant to my interests, so I'm excited to hear you sharing all of this! I have wondered whether it would be feasible to have an aquatic garden of some kind(recently started renting a house so having a backyard gave me all these bigheaded ideas lol), but the necessary utilities for water turnover/filtration would be quite expensive, even though I think it would be so incredible to cultivate algae and coral one day. This gives me a lot to think about! 🐙
This video gives me some much needed hope for the future. Thank you.
This is AWESOME! Thank you!
You’re an inspiration!
This is an amazing look at coral conservation!! Lovely!!
Your vids are SOOO great!
You're phenomenal Forrest. Thank you.

Thanks Forrest!,, fascinating from start to finish.
I love this video so much

YOU! Yooouuuu. You rock, Forrest.
That's cool!
Not me questioning my decision now of choosing human anatomy as my bio course for next semester instead of marine biology 😂😭 oh well! I’ll take it right after 🥰
you made a decent choice. there are marine biologists everywhere😅
@@theflyingdutchguy9870 haha true!! I think im going into biomed engineering overall but love to take all the fun bio courses I can in the meantime!
If you really want to help, study economics. No amount of conservationist efforts nor science will fix the real problem, Capitalism. As long as Capitalism keeps creating incentives and rewards for destroying the environment all of this is irrelevant.
@@eleSDSU true, but I have a passion for science. Everyone who likes economics should study economics and pursue that, but I just don’t. My friends aren’t into sciences and that’s okay, I don’t push them to pursue it, they have their own things they want to do. But since I do like it, I feel it’s my duty to pursue it and help because while maybe we need more people in Econ right now for environmental reasons, we still need the engineers, and all the other environmental scientists to help put those plans in action.
Just fantastic once again Forrest. Keep 'em coming! It's comforting to know there are scientists out there that are trying to help future generations.
Honestly what most of us in the field of biology do. This is one of the more crucial parts, though, cause they actively oppose the environmental change. This is one of the projects I wish I could work on
That is really, really cool! Such an important project. It probably didn’t suck for you to have to travel to the USVI to make this video, either…
I, for one, absolutely love the island of St. John in the USVI. Most beautiful beaches I’ve ever seen, with the most amazing snorkeling.
My parents lived on Bolongo Bay in the early 90’s rebuilding after Hurricane Hugo. I hear it’s good diving down there, save that damn coral!
