Josh, OU never hires head coaches (except Schnelly which was a mistake). Benny, Bud, Barry, Bob, Brent were all coordinators hired as HC's. Barry & Lincoln were OC's hired directly from within, but the others were from outside. OU's built a tradition without having to have that 'splash' hire. Splash hires haven't worked that well at Texas or Nebraska, etc.
Nailed it. That’s why I think it’ll be a good transition for OU culture under BV. unlike Texas where their football culture is in shambles and they try to fix it every few years by hiring the biggest name
@Jason V Nobody said joining the SEC was going to be a cakewalk. But discounting the Sooners is a mistake. SEC will be even more of a bloodbath, but somebody has to come out as the winner. When Saban leaves, 'Bama will come back to earth - and it might already be coming back to earth over the next few years. But OU is not a Mizzou or an Arky or the Milkmen (A&M). They are a top shelf program. I understand the hate, because many SEC (and other) fans are fairly ignorant when it comes to other teams from other conferences. And yes, OU has only won one Natty this century, granted, but for any UGA fan under 40, this last years was the first title in their lifetime. In my 50 years of life, OU's won 4. I'll always say they shoulda won in '03, '08, and '17 as well. But due to injuries or boneheaded coaching or illegal filming of practices (yes, Saban & LSU in '03 I'm talking about you) it didn't happen. I'm not bitchin', crap happens but scoreboard matters. Can't wait to mix it up down south.
To be honest I think OU will do just fine in the SEC. Coach V will have sometime under his belt as head coach. Plus it wouldn’t be the first time he’s played an SEC team. Count out OU but I promise you they are on the come up.
OU played four teams out of the SEC for either the natty or in the playoffs in this century, namely, LSU, UF, UGA and "Bama ... and Big game Bob or OU never came through .... I promise you will not be running the table in the SEC like you did in the Big 10 ... and to think OU used to win at least one or two national title/s every decade ... but hope do spring eternal as they say so keep hoping!
@@tianzi49 we don’t need to run the table every season in the SEC. Our already historical program will be making more money, going into facility and staff which will help with recruiting as well as conditioning. Look at our record vs SEC teams outside of playoff/natty games in that same time span. Once we receive all of the SEC benefits we’ll be right up there with Bama/Georgia/UF/LSU. I like our chances. Also we play in the Big 12, not the Big 10
@@LittlePimp2024 haha you are right about one thing and that is the historical nature of OU football program's utter failures of late. So then when was it the last natty? ... perhaps when the T-rex was called the king of the jungle? w/ the recent advent of NIL and the transfer portals, I don't see the blue-chips flocking to Norman whereas in the past when you said to a recruit that after three years player development here at OU you will be headed to the NFL ... which did make a good sense. But not anymore, as an example do you think Rodney Anderson would have appreciated a little financial help/incentive at OU before he got sidelined due to injury which ended his NFL prospects ... or for that matter those three young OU players who robbed a weed dealer for a little desperate financial help ... w/ everything being equal they all just might have welcomed a little relief! I remember that you guys gave Rattler, a pre-season projected Heisman winner, lousy two cheap automobiles form an OKC dealer ... good thing he was committed to OU pre-NIL ... but even his biggest payday came from Steinberg Sports Entertainment form So-Cal for the amount of $800,000. ... OU, ya must raise your NIL game ... just as TAMU did w/ $30 million to be the top recruiting class in 2022 ... the stake will be higher in the SEC. Oh btw, I love the way you said the money will be better but for whom? ... the school or the actual athletes, at OU the answer is the former ... while some kids are tempted to go robbing and stealing!
As often as you say it I can see some people growing numb to it, but it is so refreshing to hear someone saying "don't know means don't know and I'm not afraid to say that I don't know." Your intellectual integrity is always appreciated.
It's actually amazing to watch the Oklahoma football program invest in Brent Venables. Because they did not invest in Lincoln Riley this way. They let Brent bring in a legit SEC sized coaching staff. Hired legendary football operations directors and analysts that were head coaches last year. Almost all their assistants are from Alabama, Clemson or other SEC schools. They brought in Thad Turnupseed who built the Alabama program with Saban and then went and built the Clemson program with Dabo. The intensity and drive this staff has puts the last one to shame. Venables fully understands what it takes to beat the SEC. Oklahoma is going all out. They even just approved 300 million dollars in stadium renovations after just rounding the entire stadium the other year. The entire athletic department got a huge budget for improvements. Brent Venables will have this team ready to compete day 1.
Is that the same BV that Bob dismissed in favor of his own brother Mike Stoops as the DC in 2012, after his brother Mikey got canned at UA? That same Mikey who then turned vaunted OU defense into 128th in the Div I football ... tsk, tsk just askin'!
@@tianzi49 yep, that same guy. How does putting down Mike Stoops prove anything negative about BV? Just askin. I'm not sure where you're trying to go with this. BV has had 19 top ten defenses and 7 #1 ranked defenses in his career and has done everything right on and off the field. There's literally nothing to complain about. He also brings in an amazing culture for these young men.
Ou is ready 😥 ready too get their teeth kicked in! The sec is the top notch, sooners will get run over like josh jacobs ran over your player n scored 6 come on get embarassed sooner.
Brent Venables brings a lot of core values that I think are paramount to running a football program. He treats his players like family and prioritizes teaching his players to be exceptional young men above all else. He is exceptionally detail oriented. He is extremely passionate and intense. He understands what it takes to run a successful top tier program having served under Bob Stoops and Dabo Swinney for the past 2 decades. He has had many opportunities to be a head coach but it took his dream job to become avaliable to make the jump. And that's another major positive. He has so much respect for OU tradition and views this as a final destination type of job(as he should). He is very passionate about Oklahoma football and when he visits recruits that is going to be very apparent and very influential. He also has a great deal of self confidence and a great defensive mind. I honestly do not believe there was a better candidate for the job and he brought stability to a program at a time of panic. He is a slam dunk hire. How does all of this translate to results? I believe OU fans will need to temper expectations a little bit. We're not going to dominate like we did in the big 12. But I still see OU winning 10 games most years and competing for SEC titles and national titles on a pretty regular basis.
so then Jalen comeback against Baylor was soft and Kyler's 3-TD performance in the 4th Qtr. alone in the 3R was soft, and Rattler 4-OT win against UT where the veteran QB Ehlinger blinked first was soft, and to top it all off Caleb Williams come back from 28-7 deficit after the 1st Qtr. vs the UT last year was soft ... dang then what is hard? grass is always greener isn't it as in in the last three years when Clemson went up against national powers these were the scores; LSU 42-25, ND 47-40, OSU 49-28 ... real tough huh I mean 40+ given up! To top it off, they gave up over 450 yards against Pitt last year and gave NC State 45 minutes of offensive possession! and ended up going to a real farting/stink-it-up contest called "Cheez-it Bowl" last year, how impressive!
@@1185AspAve correction its just Mikey's defense was weak as baby tinkle and soft as Twinkie fillings ... if you had decent defense when ya had Baker and Kyler with that potent offense that broke all kinds of NCAA records, ya would of had at least 1 or 2 more natties ... Grinch had to deal with Mikey's legacy first, but even w/ relatively less talents, because OU was known as the offensive school and therefore could not attract high quality players on D vis-a-vis SEC schools, Grinch's defense was far better and even won few games for OU when the offense sputtered ... i.e. 7 sacks recorded against UT's Ehlinger for an example! Btw, was not BV given the heave-ho in favor Bob's dear brother Mikey in 2012 - after getting canned by UA and OU ended up w/ 128th D in the country ... just askin'!
@@tianzi49 Coach BV left OU on his own accord. He didn't want to be Co-DC with Mike Stoops again. Dabo offered him the DC job at Clemson and he took it. At least know what you're talking about before saying idiotic stuff.
I’m just glad someone said it. Everytime I say BV may be a great coach but making that jump to head coach is not as easy as many ou fans say. He could get totally humbled and fizzle out or he could be what ou needs to get over the hump. No hate, just being realistic.
Venables and his Sooners will be just fine in the SEC. Sure, they’ll have some bumps along the way but in a worst-case scenario, they’ll go 10-2 in a random season. Now Texas, that’s a different story. OU has the pedigree and story that puts them in the CFB legendarium.
Lol, they won’t go 10-2 worse case bud. Depending on what division there in, they will have to deal with Bama, UGA, UF, LSU, TAM, Miss, Auburn, etc. 9 SEC teams are pre-season top 25, Big 12 has 3, and UTex is one of them lol. Lot tougher in the SEC, won’t be a cake walk 10-2 every year, which they will find out.
You’re right the SEC won’t be a cake walk. That’s why OU got Venables who is one of the best defensive minded coaches in any conference with experience, and an understanding of how to beat top SEC teams which is why he helped beat Bama in 2 national title games. He’s also brought some world class recruiters and a very good offensive coordinator from Ole Miss
@@Andrew-mp9hu OU has never had to recruit directly against Alabama and UGA, just to name the two current top dogs. Once the conference change happens, OU will most likely settle into being a perennial 7-5/8-4 team like the vast majority of the SEC, with occasional standout seasons.
Despite recent years, OU has a winning record against the SEC. Got hammered by LSU, but when your defense gives up 63 points it's hard to win any game. Alabama game was not the blow-out people like to throw around. After a half-time adjustment, OU readily out scored them in the second half. Too many points given up to make a winning comeback. Anyway, I'm a Sooner and most of us don't make excuses. Facts are facts, and it looks like OU's defensive woes are coming to an end soon. Time will tell, but guessing the offense is going to be right up there like they always are. They will be more than ready to compete (and win) in the SEC.
Let's be fair. That LSU team wasn't gonna lose to anyone and kinda the same with some of those bama teams. Can't be too mad losing to those teams in the playoff
The Alabama game was absolutely a blowout. After 9 minutes into the first quarter, OU never came within 10 points of Bama. 3 and 4 touchdown leads at points in the game. OU scored near the end which prevented a 3-score loss, though Bama took a knee at OU's goal line at the end. When a game is never in question, it's fundamentally a blowout. A 24-14 second half isn't "readily outscored", especially when Bama decided not to score at the end.
@@mitchconner2021 For sure, but that is how good you have to be to win a national title. OU is going to get there. BV has been there and knows what it takes.
Oklahoma has been the least well rounded top 5 time of the past 5 years because Riley is just an OC. This team will be more well rounded and more reliable moving forward. The past defenses were full of small, slow, unathletic whiny children who quit after the 2nd quarter. That LSU game is the best example of that.
Venables is the next Kirby Smart. I don't think he'll get #1 classes, but he will maintain a top 5-10 level in recruiting with multiple 5 star defenders.
Yup, I pretty much see the same thing here. This year I don’t expect much, but recruits are gonna see smash mouth defense at OU and They’re gonna see that Venables is going in the right direction.
Realistically Oklahoma will be SEC recruiting bottom feeders. That is unless they can pay the players better then the other schools. Sorry I mean better NIL deals 😒
@@samright4661 what are you talking about sparky We rank number six in players on nfl rosters that's only going to improve now that we rid OUrselves of TBOW💩
When you look at OU losses to SEC teams they were to a national championship team or a team that took the champion to double overtime. In other words they lost to the same team that all the other sec team lost too. Other than that their big losses were too CLEMSON by way of there offense getting shut down by the new man in charge.
Well that should tell you that OU will not fair well with the top teams in the SEC, until they change their style. Defensive changes that is. OU should compete well with most SEC teams, I agree when a top SEC team gets it rolling, not many can stop them. Bama, UGA, LSU etc which all have won the CFP championship.
@@chuckroutionGB2022 Big recruiting classes with many highly rated recruits do help but it is not absolutely necessary. Any top 10 recruiting class can produce and even outside of that you get teams that just have the right chemistry, drive, and talent.
BV isn't the only unknown in the SEC. Sooner Nation will need to step it up as well. Support the team during that entire, BRUTAL schedule. Support the facilities and recruiting. With BV at the helm though, we are very optimistic. Looking back, I am so grateful to Riley for leaving, taking the staff and players with him. Both OU and USC got major step ups. And BV was able to come in to a clean house, make minimal firing decisions, install a staff and team that "got" his way of doing things and a fanbase that is behind him ALL THE WAY. I don't know what will happen in the 2022 season. But until BV, I was worried about the SEC. Now, I believe we have the foundation set and will build an awesome structure heading into the conference. Thanks Riley!!
I am an OU alum and life-long fan. I’m trying to be realistic, but I’ll admit that I have some bias. I truly believe OU will have a winning record most years in the SEC, and that includes the conference record too. Do I think we’ll be like Alabama? No. I think we will contend much like Kirby Smart has, but it’ll take some time. Sports guys with short attention spans often don’t remember what the SEC teams were like prior to Nick Saban. Nick Saban transformed the league. Eventually, dynasties fall and dynamics change. Parity will become more common in the SEC soon.
Josh, solid analysis. Sooner fans believe BV will be successful at OU. The X factor? Recruiting due to NIL OU appeared to be at a disadvantage in the 2022 cycle versus, TxA&M, UT, and LSU. Certainly Lincoln Riley abruptly leaving OU impacted 2022 and 2023 recruiting classes. So, if OU’s 2023 recruiting is also adversely impacted, then NIL will have a drag effect on OU that’ll eventually make it challenging to optimize on-field performance versus top tier programs. That said, the current mix of recruits and transfer players BV and his assistants have secured to date is remarkable.
What gives the SEC an edge over other conferences is that they are battle tested more often. Any SEC team that comes out the SEC as a Champ or runner up has a competitive chance in the CFP. I like Arkansas nevertheless if they were to win or become the runner up, I bet they will have a chance to win it. Look at Texas A&M LSU and Georgia all outside of Alabama. Georgia has been consistent and won, LSU had a one and done, and TAMU was knocking on the door. All that I ask for OU is to be competitive in play to give themselves a competitive chance and BV is one of the best coaches that can do that for OU. I'm not discrediting ACC or Big 10 because they have produced CFP Champions. The Group of 5, PAC-12, and Big 12 have yet to produce one. Only Oregon, OU and Cincinnati has had their chance and didn't win. Iron sharpens iron so I don't expect OU to win the first few seasons but I do expect them to compete.
Fair assessment. There are so many SEC sycophants that for some reason think teams like OU are on the level of South Carolina or Miss St or Auburn. Oklahoma is one of the best football programs in all of the NCAA. We will make the SEC even more fun. I think Georgia is a great comparison based on recent success. Also, Saban will retire and itll be a dog fight to see who emerges as top dawg (pun intended)
I think that Bama and auburn will be moved to the east and Oklahoma and Texas will be placed in the west. That's a big advantage to OU and Texas. Don't sleep on Texas A&M or LSU though. Arkansas made the state of Texas their bitch last year also. Tennessee can out score anybody that don't have a good defense. It's gonna be very interesting.
@@Decade_of_the_Dawg you can sleep on Texas. Theres nothing new happening in Austin. Same talent, same recruiting class, same chronic lack of leadership from the top down. Just remember Texas has won the second most big 12 titles: 3 of them. Oklahoma has won 14. That says far more about Texas than it does Oklahoma. They're a 2nd tier football program at best. Ironically Darrell Royal and Mack brown are their greatest coaches and they're from OU
BV and OU is an interesting situation. He's not going into a full rebuild like Lincoln Riley is at USC. He got handed the keys to a mansion with a Porche in the garage. That Porche isnt BV's style of car though. He has to recruit his type of team while working with OU's high end talent that's not kids he would have recruited to play his kind of football. It will be interesting to see how he handles the transition and uses the talent he inherited mixed with the different kind of talent he's recruiting.
IMO it comes down to how well he can recruit in the state of Texas and what OU can offer top talent in regards to NIL money. Norman, Oklahoma doesn't recruit itself.
It will be interesting to see the effect of what kind of chemistry OU will bring to the SEC. Many predicted Nebraska would dominate the Big 10 when they made the jump - and that didn't turn out to well for them. We'll see how soon the Sooners adjust.
You're certainly correct about me assuming Nebraska will dominate the big 10, boy was I wrong, I'ma lifelong BAMA fan but I remember saying something to that effect about Nebraska will be the new dominate team in the Big 10 when they made the jump
The difference here I think is that OU can actually recruit. Nebraska lost the Texas pipeline. All we're doing is gaining recruiting grounds in the South. Also, we were always the better program :p
Well I doubt that a whole lot because, first they have to build the defensive talent to get to that point, and you're dealing with multiple recruiting giants and big money spenders. This isn’t the Big 12.
@@8MoneyIzmyMission8 You dudes can keep saying "this isn't the big 12" all you want but most of you dont actually watch or follow CFB like you portray. The big 12 isn't some weak sorry conference like ESPN and SEC homers love to say. Defense will not be a problem, and its only been a problem during the riley era of our program. We have now one of the best defensive coaches of recent years as our head coach. Fun fact, big 12 went undefeated against the SEC in bowl games last year. Oklahoma leads in wins against 8 SEC schools. The only notable 2 we dont are Georgia(which we have played once with no defense and that game went into 2OT) and LSU which that record is 1-2. oklahoma is a blue blood program with plenty of money to compete with the deepest pockets. @@wesleyowens4089 I don't know if you've heard, but the SEC has made a monumental shift over the last 2 years. Lane Kiffin is at Ole Miss and instantly made a mediocre program, a tough opponent Pittman at Arkansas, immediately made a horrible team, a tough opponent Heupel at Tennessee immediately brought them an offense and a promising future LSU hired Kelly, the first time we've had a grown up HC since Nick Saban. He's also the first coach since Saban to dedicate personal QB coaches and really value the QB position. Kentucky is now a consistent program and just pulled in a top 20 recruiting class. UGA just won the national championship by knocking the Bama monkey off their backs TAMU just got the green light to spend millions and millions a year on NIL deals When Texas comes, they'll also spend millions and millions. If Auburn and Florida gets it together, they are at least competitive teams. This isn't the big 12. The amount of players the SEC sends to the NFL on a yearly basis dwarfs the Big 12. Their recruiting classes make the Big 12's look like a joke. And I see you didn't realize my comment about big money spenders was about the conference as a whole, not Oklahoma. Just realize it's not going to be some instant success. If may take 3 years or more inro his SEC stint before he can reach the SEC championship. The SEC championship is more than likely doing pods and more than likely will pick the best 2 teams if the win records are a tie.
@@Quawnn you gotta stop thinking of one off games being the benchmark. I had this same convo with a kid hollering about Boise St. The SEC is a grind. Playing a team at the end of the year that doesn't want to be there is not the same as playing them during the regular season grind. Also, if you looked further than the couple bowls we had together, the SEC as a whole outside of Bama and UGA stunk up the bowl scene. LOTS of kids opted out, LOTS of kids were hurt, coaches were hired and were planning for the future. My LSU squad had 39 scholarship players with our senior WR playing QB and 2 walk on playing in the secondary.
Both TEXAS & OU will have to, and will adjust to SEC style ball. The B12 is NOT generally a "physical" mode of play. That will have to change. Both must get bigger, stronger along both lines. Faster linebackers, better running games. I have every confidence both will adapt..
Can’t wait to smile in all the SEC fans faces after they realize OU isn’t a team like Tennessee or Texas A&M. Since 2009 those teams had a leg up due to the tv rights. You just gave you best weapon to a top 5 program all time. Thanks 😘
SEC fanboys are stupid. OU will succeed in any league because they always have. There is literally zero logic applied to the SEC argument agains OU. Recruiting classes are always top 10-15, Oklahoma beats on the SEC in bowl games historically, half of the teams in the SEC came from the big12, SW conference and Big 8. Oklahoma has had more Heisman the past 10 years and crushes it in the transfer portal. This argument is just as stupid as talking shit on ohio state as if they wouldnt do well in the SEC. Give me a break. Btw OU stomped on OSU at the shoe before losing a nail biter against Georgia in the playoffs with the worst defense in the power 5

Great take! Oklahoma will enjoy success in the SEC as they are a great program. HOWEVER, if they want to win SEC Championships, they will have to improve their recruiting. The posted recruiting graphic spoke volumes. It showed they were always 1 or 2 in the Big 12 but their National recruiting ranking was much lower. To win in the SEC you have to be top 5 EVERY year, because Bama, UGA, or another SEC school will be!

All depends if the can recruit Texas better. Without Texas zero u is Kansas South. Either way they can do ok, but win th SEC might take a long long time
SEC fans are hilarious. I love that Vols fan and the like, sitting around doubting that OU can compete with them. I love how they ignore all national rankings and national recruiting rankings, and just blindly disregard anyone without that SEC patch on their chest. Just because your scrub team plays in the SEC, doesn't mean they can beat higher ranked programs.
Long term worst case scenario: OU comes to the SEC and fights a team like Ole Miss for highest position every year. More realistically: OU will be top five in the conference every year. I’m thinking something along the lines of a less successful Georgia, but a more consistent LSU in the last ten years.
I see it this way, if Missouri can come in and play in SEC championship in first year we will do just fine. I'm not knocking Missouri here but they never won a Big 12 championship. A$$$M only won 1 in 98 and has not sniffed one since. I think we will hold our own in the SEC.
I mean Missouri came into the SEC from the Big 12 and played in 2 SEC title games... Missouri.... Oklahoma will be just fine lol all this hot air from SEC country is making me think they're afraid.
Missouri lost both title games and wasn't that competitive. They got lucky and caught UGA, Florida, and Tennessee in down years. One year they got in because of a 3 way tiebreaker. Look at their overall SEC record for a more accurate assessment. OU is obviously much better than Missouri, but it would be a huge mistake to think OU will waltz in and dominate the SEC.
Missouri has beat Ga once . And both times they got killed in the SEC title game How is Misery doing now? . Y'all will be 😭. When Chokelahoma has to play Between the Hedge's or in the Swamp or Death Valley, Tuscaloosa

Also SEC doesn't have some base NIL thing and the schools don't control it.
The last coordinator from Clemson that left to be head coach on an SEC team was an absolutely terrible move. @Chad Morris and the the Arkansas Razorbacks.
What if Brent Venables comes into the SEC and averages 8 to 9 wins in a season instead of the 10 to 11 wins that Sooner fans have been accustomed to? My guess is that they give him the axe just like Nebraska fans gave Frank Solich the axe when “good” wasn’t good enough.
One thing is for sure,Oklahoma is going to find the sledding much more difficult in the SEC than in the Big 12 and all the Sooner fan's wishful thinking isn't going to change that fact one bit.
Nobody with any sense thinks ou will have as easy of a tine in the sec. Not even the most delusional fans. Silly take. The sec fans that say ou will go 5-7 or be a 500 team are dreaming big, real big. Ou has a winning record against many sec teams including Bama
I don’t think any OU fan has been saying OU would be as dominate in the SEC as they are in the Big 12. But if they are continuously in the hunt for SEC titles and win a national title here and there than that would be considered a success
Average take bordering on a D. Not all sec teams are in top 5, the difference between top 5 and 10 isn't as great as is perceived, nothing indicates venables won't be able to recruit a top 3 class or more. He's coached in 8 nsttys, more than anyone except Saban who has one more. He knows what it takes. Whether he can do it is unknown. The question that Josh wasted a segment on was no good. I know we raised a lot of eyebrows when he was named HC. OU gonna have some growing pains in the SEC. There's just no way around it. OU has way more talent than Arkansas did when we joined and I suspect they will beat some of the better SEC teams maybe even in the first season but the SEC schedule grind is going to expose them. They will lose to some teams that is gonna shock OU. There aren't many glorified bye weeks in the SEC as there are in the big 12
Funny how people think Oklahoma can't win in the sec. For many years before oh I would say 2003 it was a he big 12 that was the premiere conference before bamas run sec had never won shit. History repeats itself. It's easy to see why sec had passed them up on the passed 20 years. Bama plays Georgia. What once every ,10 years. Back loading there schedule with teams like la Monroe and the citidel. Affording them a well rested healthy team going into playoffs. Sec knows it's on borrowed time at the top. OU has been in a conference with teams that simply can't compete with them. Outside of Texas, the rest of the big 12 can compete with OU, they dont have the ability to secure enough top tier talent. That will not be the case in the SEC. Big 12 may get 3 teams in the top 25 in recruiting. SEC can have 8 or 9 teams in the top 15. Big difference in talent on a week in, week out basis in the SEC.
Texas has 3 big 12 titles. OU has 14. They dont compete with OU. Baylor, OSU, Texas Tech, TAMU, Mizzou and Neb were all better than Texas. SEC teams are nothing new to Oklahoma. OU has a fantastic bowl record agains the SEC. The expectation is for Oklahoma to play in SEC championships. If they do not it will be considered a disappointment
Lincoln Riley might have stayed at Oklahoma if Oklahoma had stayed in the Big 12. Heck, he was pretty much garanteed to win the Big 12 every other year at worst. Probably a CFP spot evry 3 years at worst. In the SEC they will be lucky to get a conference championship every other decade. It makes total sense to go to USC where he can pretty puch replicate the odds of winning the conference and getting to the CFP as he had at Oklahoma.
@@thunderousooner527 Well, we have some NIL, but not like the rich parts of the country. We can't dish out $1 mill to a kid. Will we compete? It will be interesting to see how it works out. I'm just not optimistic for OU in the grand scheme.
Oklahoma will be 2nd tier in the SEC, their days of playing in the CFP will be drastically limited until CFP expansion. I believe Oklahoma is 0-4 in the CFP. This is the main stat that supports my theory.

Venables was coached by one of the greatest college football coaches of all time, Bill Snyder
Thats correct, to work with Snyder, Stoops and Swinney. Those guys are hall a famers.
Then Bob stoops then Dabo Sweeney. Easily one of the most coveted coordinators in history.

Venables and his Sooners will be just fine in the SEC. Sure, they’ll have some bumps along the way but in a worst-case scenario, they’ll go 10-2 in a random season. Now Texas, that’s a different story. OU has the pedigree and story that puts them in the CFB legendarium.

@@Andrew-mp9hu OU has never had to recruit directly against Alabama and UGA, just to name the two current top dogs. Once the conference change happens, OU will most likely settle into being a perennial 7-5/8-4 team like the vast majority of the SEC, with occasional standout seasons.
The Sooner will be ready Day 1 when the SEC move happens on every level good move for all parties involved can't wait for the good times to begin
Being a contender is where a lot of teams want to be. Oklahoma has been one for many years.
Not a OU fan but I think they'll compete in the SEC for the long term though. I hope both them and Texas join next year.
Next several years:
UGA / Bama
LSU / UF
A&M / Ole Miss
OU
UT / Arkansas
Everyone else
Kansas
UT-Austin

Good job. Agree with you
BV and OU is an interesting situation.
How is Kirby Smart working out for ya at Georgia?
SEC will be surprised how good Oklahoma football team is
We may not be the best team in the SEC but we will be one of the top teams in the SEC

But we know - Our Program has the right Coach & Staff going forward into the SEC!
It's not Oklahoma you should be concerned about it's Texas Oklahoma will do just fine in the Southeast conference

OU will do fine in the SEC

All depends if the can recruit Texas better. Without Texas zero u is Kansas South. Either way they can do ok, but win th SEC might take a long long time

Go tell Kirby smart a first time coach can't be a slam dunk
To win the SEC, slim to none.
No one really thought Ryan Day was going to be as good as he is and just keep the train at Ohio State rolling.

Once Saban retires maybe
brent/dabo have owned saban recently
Long term worst case scenario: OU comes to the SEC and fights a team like Ole Miss for highest position every year.
More realistically: OU will be top five in the conference every year. I’m thinking something along the lines of a less successful Georgia, but a more consistent LSU in the last ten years.
Beating South Carolina every year doesn’t mean anything “against SEC”

I see it this way, if Missouri can come in and play in SEC championship in first year we will do just fine. I'm not knocking Missouri here but they never won a Big 12 championship. A$$$M only won 1 in 98 and has not sniffed one since. I think we will hold our own in the SEC.

OU's move to the SEC was a money move at the sacrifice of their football success Riley isn't leaving if thought he could win at OU.
heres why oklahoma went to the SEC.
1 better recruits
2 more money bigger NIL deals
3 better competition (iron sharpens iron)
4 better TV deals and benefit of the doubt when it comes to making the playoffs
oklahoma moving to the sec is just going to make them a stronger program and will start to push them into national title comtenders yearly
@@zoomdoof6107 First off OU announced in 2018 they were $1 billion dollars in debt, their endowment in 2.7 billion. This was for money. If it was about football they'd stay in the big 12 where they get into the payoffs and own the conference. You don't see Clemson sniffing around the Big 10 or SEC.
Also SEC doesn't have some base NIL thing and the schools don't control it.
Charlie Strongs are much more common than Lincoln Rileys. Good luck OU, failure is much more likely for a first time ever HC than success is
The last coordinator from Clemson that left to be head coach on an SEC team was an absolutely terrible move. @Chad Morris and the the Arkansas Razorbacks.
Good luck Sooners
What if Brent Venables comes into the SEC and averages 8 to 9 wins in a season instead of the 10 to 11 wins that Sooner fans have been accustomed to? My guess is that they give him the axe just like Nebraska fans gave Frank Solich the axe when “good” wasn’t good enough.
if he averages 8-9 wins over several years and never has a top 10 team, id think itd be reasonable to find a new coach

Right on. I think that's the main reason LR left. He saw Sark get a #1 recruiting class at USC in 2016 and thought "if that guy can do it at USC..."
@@mark1778 He left because he knew he couldn't win in the SEC at OU. He was smart he left before his stock took a hit from the move.
Of course no one knows until it happens. 🙄
@@willcover6142 all the teams that are in the playoffs and have one the national championship the last 5 years have all had top 5 recruiting classes in that window. That's the gap. @@mark1778 I know that. Small sample size, and I think he can recruit with the big boys and did so at Clemson. Check out his boys at Clemson. It pleases me to hear that people point to Sam Pittman as a positive example. Granted I know we (Arkansas) havent won anything big yet but he's put up enough results in a tough environment to be viewed as a successful hire.
Once Saban is gone the gravy train is over and it's back to being mediocre so what they do is go out and get Texas and Oklahoma to keep the dominance affloat
If OU was going to the East they would do a lot better.
A lot of speculation has Alabama and Auburn switching to the East and Oklahoma and Texas joining the west

Oklahoma will dominate the SEC.
The Big 12 was 3-0 against the SEC in bowls last year. The SEC is Alabama. Oklahoma will be fine.

Oklahoma is too much of a blue blood to not eventually win the SEC. Whether Brent does, remains to be seen.
