- What is the difference between mixing and mastering? This video will explain what mixing and mastering is, and how it's used. This tutorial will teach you the difference between Mixing and Mastering and give you some good mixing and mastering examples. It will also give you some good tips and tricks on how to mix and master a song.
Mixing and mastering are two of the most fundamental processes in any song. If you don't know how to do this right, your music will never be as good as the competition, so this is something you simply have to learn eventually.
You can choose to let someone else do the mixing and mastering, but sooner or later you will have to learn to mix and master a track yourself. Knowing how to mix AND master a track is something every serious producer will need to know eventually.
Mixing a track has more to do with getting the volume right on the individual tracks in the mix. Processing such as EQ, compression, delay, and reverb is also typically added during mixing. Mastering is what happens after mixing a track. It's the final stage where the song is optimized to get the proper loudness, added clarity, and so on.
This mixing and mastering tutorial will teach you the difference between mixing and mastering, how we do it and why. it will show you some examples of what plugins are used for mixing and mastering, such as EQ, Compression, Saturation, Sidechaining, delay, reverb, etc.
Music that is not mixed and mastered won't sound good compared to mixed and mastered music.

@@Marcellus-Wallace bro too poor to spell poor tho???
i dont get that people dislike such beneficial videos.
Thanks! I've noticed that every time I upload a new video, almost instantly (usually) I get a dislike. Clearly someone subscribed to me is determined to dislike all my videos for some reason. I'm glad you found the video helpful! I'm here to help! :)
I just want to say that I disliked the video only because I don't want to be forced to watch the video twice (one to listen to and the other to read what's on screen). Other than that, the information seems pretty helpful, it just seems a bit disorganized ^~^
TheLastBrony: I'm glad you're letting me know the reason why, so that I can improve in the future. It was never my intention to make people watch the video twice. I was just trying to highlight / sum up the most important stuff with the animations, to make it easier to remember.
I assumed the pace was just slow enough that it wouldn't be a problem. I was just trying to be helpful. Apparently it backfired. I will keep this in mind in the future, and change my strategy accordingly! Thanks again for your helpful feedback. :)
I'm working on another tutorial now, and I'm now changing it so that there's no text and peach at the same time. :)
Thanks so much! I get so overwhelmed with too much information all at once ^~^
"After hearing a track over and over thousands of times" yeeeea i mix my own stuff and i cant stand the repitition and by then end the song has lost its magic 😬 ill reiterate his great tip- just because you can doesnt mean you should! Pass the track to a fresh pair of ears 👍
Indeed, that's exactly right. Many professionals send their tracks to an engineer to get the track mastered, not because they don't know how to do it themselves, but simply because a pair of fresh ears can do wonders for the track. :)
@W 9797 and maybe you a bitch ass nigga. You really want to play the guessin game?
Many actually recommend sending your tracks to someone else to be mastered, because you listen to the tracks very differently than someone else and might get deaf to the track and its flaws. For you its your own piece of work, but for someone else its either just a payday or a hobby.
CBAN LMAO yo this shit made me scream 😭😭
Parking the particular track for a week or 2 and working on something else, sometimes helps to get your ears "reset". You may be surprised how different things sound after just not working on it a while :-)
Some have professional studios for mastering.
Some make music in their bedroom, put around some speakers and do stuff.
I do that stuff in a crowded living room, on a computer over 10 years old, with a demo version of FL studio.
That's true. Mixing in less than ideal environments will be a challenge. Regardless, it's possible to get a good mix no matter the mixing environment, the clue is to know your equipment and your room. As long as you know exactly how it will translate to different gear and different rooms, you can still get the job done. :)
Damn I guess I'm the only one with no headset and broken speakers so I'm guessing what my beat sounds like?
Just spending an hour, watching your How To Mix Playlist has taught me more than than YEARS of burrowing through the landfill of the internet. Thank you, my friend!!
Hi Christopher, glad you found it helpful (and sorry for the late reply) :)
Thank you for creating this!!! This was SUPER helpful! I love how you broke things down and made analogies to make these concepts more understandable! I look forward to using what I learned. Thank you! 🙏🏼
You welcome

One of the best Music Tutorial Channels out right now. =)
Thank you very much! :)
agreed firewalk is the shit
I love the verbal and audible clarity. Thank you for making this!
Glad you liked it :)
I’ve learned so much from this channel and In The Mix that I feel like I owe you guys money at this point…
You should have way more subscribers. Your explanations are very clear, consise and you don't add annoying fillers that add nothing to do the video. Thanks for making these.
Thanks, very much appreciated. I try hard to make all my videos short and straight to the point.
Unfortunately I think that's also a big part of why I don't have more subscribers. The UA-cam algorithm favors longer videos that keep people on the platform longer. Most UA-camrs are aware of this and that's why they tend to add "fillers" as you say, to make the videos as long as possible.
Videos longer than 10 minutes can have more than one ads which means more revenue too.
This channel is all about helping people, so I refuse to do the same, even though I know that short videos won't get promoted as much by the UA-cam algorithm. Hopefully people will share the videos if they find them useful :)
Man you drew perfect circles effortless like that. Superb.
Thank you for all your work this is by far best tutorials ive seen with voice over explanation just what i needed i been producing for about 3 years and wonder why my stuff sound like trash not crisp not clear leads dont punch threw bad layering (i seen your other vid on that) i just stumbled on your channel and your going to help me improve as i apply what i learn from you to my producing . Thank you i hope i can finally get what these 17 year olds are doing that i cant seem to understand hahahah. Thank you.
You're welcome! Glad you find the videos useful :)
Those 17 year olds are probably very keen to learn new things fast, and they probably also have a lot more energy than those who are older, with full time jobs, kids and so on.
The best advice is to try and learn at least one new thing every day. A famous producer once said that you should never be content with your production skills. Even when you're at the top of your game and doing really well, you should never settle and think that "i'm good enough". Instead you should always try to evolve and learn new things. That's the best advice I've ever come across in this business, because it's so true.
If you keep doing the same thing day in and day out, you're not going anywhere. Instead, try to learn new things and incorporate those things into your productions, and you'll notice a huge leap forward eventually :)
Why the heck havent i discovered this channel before??
Being a beginner, its the best channel for learning thingd.Just went through Firewalk's 3 eq tutorials of How to mix series.Amaazing Tutorials. Its best for beginners.Other mixing tutorials just blew up my mind.😀
Thanks! Glad to hear that you found the content useful! :)
Great video. Mixing is easy but mastering can be very complicating. But luckily this video explained everything simple and efficiently. Thankyou.
Very true about if you don’t select the right sounds first then no amount of mixing will save it
Indeed :)
6:33 YES THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING EARLIER!! I COULDNT HAVE EXPLAINED THAT BETTER MYSELF!!

Great videos, thanks! As for tutorial requests, I've been deeply interested in making micro sound compositions, but can't find much on mixing, etc. the sounds. For those not familiar with Micro Sound, here some some examples: Alva Noto, Ryoji Ikeda, Richard Chartier, Bernhard Günter.
I would have to look into it, thanks! :)

Gutted, great tutorials my friend, was taking notes and getting into it then realised your tutorials were aimed from FL users!
Would highly recommend any new to FL to watch this guys videos, uncomplicated and concise........almost makes me want to change from Cubase, haha...almost. Picked up some good tips still, so thank you bro!
Thanks, glad you found some of the videos helpful despite using a different daw. Cubase is a great daw too. Theese days it's more about the workflow, and not so much about features. Cubase definitely has more "features" than FL Studio in terms of connectivity, compability and such, and is far better suited for recording and such. I still have an older version installed. I just couldn't afford to keep paying for updates, and because I mostly make pattern based music (trance etc) these days FL Studio gets the job done just fine. :)
this is the best tutorial i've ever seen
Glad you liked it :)
The music production version of “how it’s made”. Voices are even similar 😂😎. All joking aside, we appreciate you doing this man!
this is brilliant, thankyou so much !

Great tutorials!! Thanks! i subscribed!
Thanks :)
I've been recording and mixing for decades. Always cognizant of ear hearing fatigue. Make a point of getting out of the studio often for a walk in the woods or go for coffee and lunch. Then come back refreshed and ready to produce best work possible.
Usefull stuff man. Thank you so much 🤜🏻🤛🏻🔥

Nice one mate, it's true about listening that same track over thousands of times, at the end you don't hear any difference anymore. Luckely I use Ozone too, this helps me mastering my track too. Cheers buddy, again a nice video ! :-)
Thanks my friend! :D
Thing is this now days im hearing music and its sounding either stupid loud or meh mixed and its a growing trend...Back in the michael jackson and so forth tracks use to be tight and had that kick to it..Its not like that now imo i would rather master my self and get close to what i like and making it sound nice then to pay someone may/may not know what they doing and you dished out $$$ and the track sounds meh...
It was really helpful information Mahsha Allah may god bless u sir
Love your videos.
Glad you like the videos :)

You explained this perfect😭🙏🏽. When at a recording studio, should I pay for both ?
Thanks. :) Mixing & mastering will typically be more expensive than just mastering or just mixing.

Thanks, I will :)
Great video! I just talked about the subject on my channel as well. Super important to understand how the two work together!
Thanks! :) Indeed it is! A lot of people get this wrong. They finish their mixes, well aware of the problems in it, thinking that this will be fixed in the mastering stage..
thank for this wisdom
