  • When SwimSwam visited the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, and got the chance to document both the women's and men's programs in the weight room, we sat down with their strength coach, Greg Adamson, to see what his philosophy for training swimmers was like.

Yet another young S&C coach with limited knowledge of the sport and a professional agenda. Glad he’s willing to learn, but would you want your athletes’ careers to be a coach’s “experiment”?

S&C at the college level revolves around football. It's really hard to to get coaches with swimming backgrounds for the "minor" sports. It's kind of the nature of the beast. You just hope they know their craft enough to be able to adapt to a new challenge.

I agree. It’s a systemic issue. I’d like to see more former swimmers make their way into the S&C field, but it’s tough to compete with the mainstream sports. Looks like Coach Adamson has an open mind and is willing to learn. That’s progress!

If Erika Brown is the result of that experiment, then yes.

his title in the video is literally Director of Olympic Sports Performance. I highly doubt he does anything with football lmao

Did we even watch the same video? He came in with limited knowledge of the sport, but worked to learn about the ins and outs of it with the help of the coaching staff. His title lists him as the Strength Coach for Swimming/Diving and Soccer. So I'm sure his "professional agenda" is to help those athletes be the best they can be. The Tennessee coaches would have been involved in his hiring process. If they support him and his strength training, I'm sure that's all that matters.
