    FAQ AT BOTTOM!!
    Hey all, thanks for watching! I made an Instagram to post more simple short updates! If you want to see what I'm up to more often than I post here you should check it out =) @marshallspins
    FAQ
    How often do you skate?
    My ice time has varied a lot just depending on my weekly work+school schedule. I'd say on average 5-7 hours a week, but some weeks I wouldn't be able to go at all, or only a couple hours and some weeks I would get significantly more.
    How many lessons?
    My first 6 weeks I was taking 2 30 min group lessons a week, then I took 1 a week for my second 6 weeks (though I missed a couple), and I haven't been able to take classes since then so everything after that has been independent practice
    What kind of skates do you use?
    Jackson freestyles! I started on jackson soft skates but I "outgrew" them once I started jumping
    Are you a dancer/ did you do sports??
    I did colorguard at a high level for 7 years. For those not familiar, it's a type of dance similar to baton twirling. If you've ever seen a marching band half time show, we are the people with the flags! For those who are familiar, I competed at both wgi and dci =
    How old are you?
    I'm 22

    Hello I am a 25-year-old Korean adult figure skater. See your video for the first time through an algorithm I fell in love You have such a beautiful posture and a strong and healthy body Also, I think you use the edge well and have good cool movements and speed. Watching your fast level up through the video I feel the thrill I wish I had the same talent as you. You are lucky and I envy you so much. I can't skate right now because of a ligament rupture in my knee. Maybe I'll never skate again when you are drenched in sorrow When I first saw your video, I was amazed. Your video has comforted me I feel like I have been satisfied Will I be able to stand on the ice again someday? Congratulations and encouragement to your skating

    Your progress is amazing. I'm starting lessons in 10 days and I am terrified as I haven't skated in a very, very long time. You're giving me hope!! I read somewhere that you have dance experience too, I've been doing ballet forever and I'm confident it will help me but I also know I'm not a good jumper so that terrifies me further :'D I guess we will see if I am brave enough to do a progress video too ;-)

    On you’re tap toe you’re leading with your toe into the rotation which will get downgraded to a waltz jump. Think of leading with your right heel instead of the right toe☺️

      Thank you so much!!! The biggest thing for me is probably just not being afraid of falling haha. That way I can fearlessly throw myself in the air and even if I screw up it's not a big deal. I also ask a LOT of questions when I learn stuff bc if I feel like something's weird it usually means I misunderstood an instruction somewhere. Doing jumps off ice is really helpful as well! Also the reason I started recording myself was so I could watch it back and see what I was doing wrong which I really recommend!!! That way you can learn to watch yourself critically and gain body awareness. I hope that helps!!

    Hi there, I saw you using roller blades to practice on the 1st month. I'm about to start figure skating and wonder if it helps? I want to try buying some to practice of ice if it's worth it. 😀

    • @marshallspins8348
      @marshallspins8348  2 роки тому

      Hi!! So it kinda depends on if you already know how to Rollerblade imo. If it's something you're already comfortable with, then standard recreational rollerblades can be helpful for practicing your basic skills, such a stroking, crossovers, and 1 foot glide. However, it actually feels quite different to skate in rec rollerblades than figure skates. Recreational rollerblades are completely flat and don't have a rocker, which means that you wouldn't be able to practice things like 3 turns, spins, or anything else that uses your rocker. The same goes for anything requiring a toe pick, like jumps, as standard rollerblades do not have a toe stop. If you don't already know how to Rollerblade, then the difference in feel between the two would very possibly make you progress slower on both types of skate, since you would have to readjust every time you switch skates. Personally, even though I've been rollerblading my whole life, when I spend a lot of time figure skating then try to pick rollerblading again, I feel extremely clunky and not dexterous. That being said, there are inline figure skates, which are a really great option for practicing off ice! They are built with a rocker and toe stop and use a standard figure skating boot, and pretty much everything you do on ice is possible with them. If you have trouble getting ice time these are a great option, and I definitely plan to get some someday. The only downside is that inline figure skates are quite expensive, so they may not be an investment a beginner is interested in making, especially if getting ice time isn't an issue. I hope that all makes sense and is helpful!

    This is amazing. I’m looking to start ice skating lessons (I have zero background in ice skating and have only been in skates a couple of times). I’ve just always dreamed of being able to skate properly. What kind of progress do you think a complete novice could make in 3 months ?

    • @marshallspins8348
      @marshallspins8348  Рік тому

      Hi!! My short answer is that if you work hard I think you can start your waltz jump and two foot spin in 3 months. But my long answer is more complicated. Everyone improves at such drastically different rates, especially early on, that it's really hard to say. Some people can only make it to their group class once a week, some practice once or twice between classes, some people skate every day. The time you put in is very closely correlated with how fast you improve. Everyone also has certain parts of skating that they are more drawn to and will improve faster at those things. For example, I LOVE jumping haha. As a result I not only practice them more, but have a much more keen analytical eye for noticing minor details that could be improved. Meanwhile it took me like a year and a half of skating to realize that my spin entrances are still wrong lol! So my spins and jumps are at drastically different achievement levels.
      Setting goals is important for improving, but remember that your goal probably isn't to "be better than everyone else" haha. I wouldn't worry about if you're improving at the rate that you're "supposed to", rather, focus on the parts of skating that feed your heart.
      Sorry this turned into an essay but the more I thought about the question the more I realized I had a lot to say haha. I guess im feeling sentimental. I couple probably talk for hours about this but I'll spare you haha

    I once did some trial lessons when I was 14 and I'm 18 now but since I have the ambition to go to the conservatory to study piano (and too many other hobbies) I never continued. Maybe after conservatory..? Who knows? And besides that, I can't really afford to get injured since I play the piano seriously..

      Unfortunately my practice schedule has been reeaally inconsistent due to working so much and there was like almost a full 2 weeks that the rink was closed during month 3 bc their cooling system broke 😅😅😅 I'd guess that for weeks that I was able to make it to the rink I practiced like,, 7-9 hours a week during this month? But in general I just try to get as much time as I can haha. Also I haven't really been doing off ice.

    Hii I was wondering when u got ur skates? Did u get them right away or skated w rentals for a while then got them? Cuz idk where to get them tbh since I dont have any skate shops near me and I start next week.

    • @marshallspins8348
      @marshallspins8348  2 роки тому

      So I actually got my first pair of skates way before i started skating lol bc they were a Christmas present but everything was closed until recently due to covid. So I started on a pair of jackson soft skates which are good for learning your basic skills, but not really for jumps or spins that are more advanced than you basic two and one foot spins. They are basically one step above rentals, but I know lots of people that start in rentals and then buy a nicer pair once they feel that they've "outgrown" them. After I started working on jumps i got a pair of jackson freestyles and they work great! I'm not an expert on skates though since I'm new and my rink has a specialist that helped my find the right pair for me.
