Dan is a testament to the great Minneapolis sound in the late 80's/early 90s and beyond. Such an incredible singer/songwriter. The raw emotion within his voice is something that can't be taught. His entire catalog from Trip Shakespeare to more recent co-writes (ie. When the Stars come out on Chris Stapleton's Traveller album) resonate so strongly with lyrical emotion. Good stuff.
Love this version! I think it blows away the more popular version. Orchestration and the male tenor are just killers. Inspiring to us songwriters. Thanks.
I absolutely love Dan Wilson and his work. This between him and Adele and his work with Semisonic is just so amazing. I genuinely don't understand how this man is such a genius. I've only noticed one trope in his songs (going up a whole step in chorus, ex: Completely Pleased and Never You Mind) and I've only seen him use common chord progressions two and a half times. (Closing Time, Over My Head, and this song). Such a genius.
If the song wins Song of the Year at the Grammy's or Oscars best original song (in a movie), credit goes to the songwriter/s. Also, when you buy a single/album, credits are given. names of songwriters, sound engineers, etc are mentioned.
Their paychecks make up for it. Also, your average Joe may not know them, but the artists you idolise will know them very well, so will their managers, agents, labels.
@@CallieCacola Adele is a super talented artist, and I'm not trying to dump on her, but those "co-writing" credits are an industry conceit. For sure he'll have written 99% of the song.
When Dan goes or chooses to go melodic it’s hard to find an artist or group today that comes close. So much Neil Young and 70’s and Dan Wilson in his voice and music! ✊🏽
Awesome! Loved Semisonic, got the album for Christmas 98 I was like 14, loved the singles but that album was solid. Always liked Never You Mind. Then Adele, was never a big fan but you need to respect artists whether they are to your taste or not. But she sung Someone like you, even I enjoyed that 1! Found out a couple year down the line it was actually written by Dan. Which was great, because even though he was out of the limelight he was clearly still creating greatness and doing well for himself all those years later.
DAn Wilson great composer , I love it your sensibilidad y creativity .. thanks for give us this music .. CLOSING TIME its one of my favorites songs ever ..
Happened upon while checking out Dan's album, as I enjoy hearing reinerpretations (& did purchase CD straight-away). Some familiarity with Kronos Quartet also piqued my curiosity. Soo much more to my liking than the overblown version. (I typically don't care for the over-produced mass-mainstream music tropes, preferring going digging & panning for gold & finding it!) Stellar song & performance/quietly introspective magnificence! I'm in awe! 🙌 💖
I found Dan Wilson on UA-cam a few months ago. I am enamoured. I feel so much more educated. I am a wealth of useless knowledge. Trivia. "I know something you don't know." And it is awesome.
Love the way he took it up in the last chorus, just like Adele. "Don't forget me!!!!" That is TOUGH, but he pulled it off, and it was wonderful and made me happy. 4:08 Makes me wonder if that was rehearsed or if he just let the emotion carry him.
Dan always has had the ability to nail those ethereal high notes because the guy is blessed with the voice of an angel. I was fortunate in the early 1990s to see his old band he was in with his brother Matt, Trip Shakespeare, and that was one of the greatest live shows I’ve ever seen. But now Dan has really proven himself to be one of the greatest singer-songwriters of our time.
That's a great take, Dan. I love it. Just one hint; in my country, Poland that is, you'd find string quartet that is on par, quality-wise, with those guys, for the fraction of the price. Best of luck. I'm a fan, Lukasz Dyakowski.
I had no idea who wrote this song. Always loved the piano, and just assumed it was written by some Hollywood producer. The singerr of semisonic (a good band) wrote this masterpiece and I love this version A masterpiece even before Adele.
This version is more like letting go someone cause we feel we should and we are happy to do that while adele’s put more bitterness in it.. i like this more..
Hey great performance. id like to see you work with james blunt. you would make a big bang and bring recreate another world if you believe in the theory
Standard string quartet :) two violins, one viola, and one cello - plus his guitar. Sounds like there might be a piano laying down some minimal chords even though it's not shown.
Hi Dan: Recently re-discovered Semisonic (I was around 14 the first time I heard Closing Time), and I was so glad that I started to dig into your music. I don´t like Adele´s music (not really my style), but your acoustic rendition of this song at the 2012 ASCAP Pop Music Awards opened my ears and the song has become one of my favourites. Thanks a lot for your wonderfull music. Cheers from Chile.

Song writers rule the world.. cheers
Easily so so miles better than adeles version
He's a spectacular songwriter an his voice is so unique. Glad he doesn't hate his hit from Semisonic either. Seems like a good guy.

he has the most sincere voice
It's a shame the writer's and true musician's dont get credit for their pure brilliance.

Credit? He’s getting paid
Adele also wrote the song, it's a collaborative effort, like most music.

Can you imagine what would have happened if this was on Feeling Strangely Fine????? 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯
DAN WILSON IS A GENIUS
Beautiful. My favourite rendition
always gives me the chills to listen to your songs Dan. Love your music.
God I just love this man’s songs. I listen to so much Semi Sonic snd Dan Wilson.
I still hold hope for a new Semisonic album or tour....or both.
Not sure where you live but they are at Summerfest in Milwaukee this summer.
A new album is being released sometime in 2020. The first released song from the album is "Basement Tapes".
When Dan goes or chooses to go melodic it’s hard to find an artist or group today that comes close. So much Neil Young and 70’s and Dan Wilson in his voice and music! ✊🏽
A very different version. Still fragile and beautiful. Well done.
Beautiful song🎶
Kronos Quartet are amazing in their own right

Doesn't Someone Like You only use a piano and Adele's voice? I'd hardly say that's overproduced.

wow....
What I would give to spend 1 hr at the piano with you!
Sabina Agha he also wrote this with Adele, so to compose a song with him would be a dream come true for all of us young aspirant musicians out there.
He’s so underrated
What a golden voice and class songwriter. Much prefer this to Adele.
Excellent
True music ;)
I had no idea who wrote this song. Always loved the piano, and just assumed it was written by some Hollywood producer. The singerr of semisonic (a good band) wrote this masterpiece and I love this version
A masterpiece even before Adele.
before Adele? The song was written by Adele with him, started by Adele alone, he wouldn't have had this song at all if it wouldn't have been for Adele
Shame not many know he wrote these lyrics, man's an unknown genius
he did in fact not write these lyrics, those are Adele's
This version is more like letting go someone cause we feel we should and we are happy to do that while adele’s put more bitterness in it.. i like this more..
Here in 2024.
Hey great performance. id like to see you work with james blunt. you would make a big bang and bring recreate another world if you believe in the theory
Amazing work Dan. Do you want to co-write something with me?
Hey Dan, can you please tell me every instrument used in the video?
Standard string quartet :) two violins, one viola, and one cello - plus his guitar. Sounds like there might be a piano laying down some minimal chords even though it's not shown.
Important to know is that Dan Wilson wrote this song and sold it to Adele.
Hi Martijn - actually, Adele and I wrote this song together. Thanks for listening and commenting!

Dan Wilson well you delivered it with more soul my brother
Dan Wilson love this comment! Go Dan!
For me you are the Lennon of this time.
All of the people here, you're cool. I like you.
#Minneapolis, first take #Prince, then take #GeorgeFloyd
🙏🏻🧿😻🖖🏻 #DanWilson a.k.a #Semisonic (The Man Who Stands #Adele's #OneHitWonder)
Luckily, I am one of the people in this world who knows the truth about this song...peace.
Great song, a shame Adele killed it, so simple three easy notes yet powerful.
this isnt his song tho?
lilly cooper he wrote it. He’s a beast as both a writer and singer
If this guy was any good he wouldn't a B grade back up....confused & no real talent!
Guess you've never heard of Semisonic
@@lilly-b3x4d also, he co-wrote this song with Adele...
