- The Discourses of Epictetus are a series of informal lectures by the Stoic philosopher Epictetus written down by his pupil Arrian around 108 AD. Four books out of an original eight are still extant. The philosophy of Epictetus is intensely practical. He directs his students to focus attention on their opinions, anxieties, passions and desires, so that "they may never fail to get what they desire, nor fall into what they avoid." True education lies in learning to distinguish what is our own from what does not belong to us, and in learning to correctly assent or dissent to external impressions. The purpose of his teaching was to make people free and happy.

That's a big damn gap between chapters 1 and 2. Especially as compared to the length between the other chapters. What can you do though? The source material is the source material.

Thank you Robin. I can't help but associate stoicism with your voice, whenever I read Seneca or Epictetus or Marcus Aurelius it's always in your voice, and I will listen to this one from head to finish. Your recordings have truly helped me.

Epictetus reminds me of William Walker Atkinson, Swami Vivekananda, the New Testament authors, etc.
Before I listened to this book, I listened to you reading Miyamoto Musashi's "Book of 5 Rings". Every time your voice tapers off I expect you to say "You must study this well" LOL. I get flashbacks to listening to that book during some of my training every time you say the word "spirit". Anyways, thank you very very much for this Robin. No I wouldn't, Mr Epictetus, because it's within your power-of-choice/moral-purpose to decide that you will assent to all of those things and decide that they are not a misfortune, because it is only oneself that makes one misfortunate, and it has befallen you as Zeus wills. No one can force you but yourself, so you have already assented to these things.
Furthermore, as you said before, it's not right for a man to take on and share the miseries of another, so where is the reason to get angry, let alone kill, the man who does these things to you?

I did become a slave and I did discover terrible things along the way. Now I am trapped. I know by small changes I might be able to get out of it but I’ve become worse then the corpse, the biggest prostitute, a walking zombie of the sort.
