Thank you for taking the time to review this. Interesting note, as I shop this, and the Acer Helios 500 PH517-51-72NU. The Acer has similar specs, 17" 144hz 1070gtx ect... but the Asus comes in nearly 3 pounds lighter than the Acer. The Asus is also a half inch thinner, with a slightly smaller footprint. That's a lot. The Asus seems like it may be easier to lug around, maybe at the cost of heat and durability? Haven't made up my mind between these two units, but your video was very helpful.
Mine has never hit 98 degrees and I get 160fps straight in GTA V. This is by far the best laptop for the price in the UK. Can be picked up for £1500 if you look around.
@@2_CR1T1CAL there have been a few bios updates and yes mine is exactly the same as the one in video. The temps and sound are no worse that any other gaming machine. For what it's worth, my usual temps when gaming are early 80s on the cpu and 70s on gpu if it's a particularly tasty title, otherwise gpu is in the 50s.
I have this laptop. They already fixed the fan issue. It doesn't go up like that, unless you give full speed, which you will use for gaming. As for as CPU Temp, I undervolted my CPU by - 150mV. I get almost same performance and my temp goes max 85 degrees. Usually 70 to 80 during gaming.
So you would not put this not on your desk. Fair enough. But you would put the MSI GE73 8RG on your desk. Despite of them having similar specs and issues as you mention in both videos. Why would you put the MSI variant above the ASUS one? I am kinda on the fence between those two. I like the Asus aesthetically more, and it is 300 euros cheaper my region.
Heh I doubted between these exact two when I bought this laptop last year for my nephew. Now this year I bought an MSI GE75 for my wife. The MSI one is clearly better, it's quieter and cooler. Asus must have some kind of flaw in their cooling.
My GL703GS runs cool, idles at less than 40C with ambient being 26C, rarely see anything above 70C underload, it can spike up to 90C, however once the fans spin up the temperature drops rapidly. Set to Silent now, fans are shutdown, with usual MS Office productivity going on, CPU temp 44C. Also worth noting the fan profiles do a lot more than just spin up the fans, setting it to Overboost your setting the CPU to it's max power state and the GPU is overclocked, so unsurprisingly the notebook will be much louder. Setting the notebook to Silent reduces the CPU's TDP from 45W to 35W reducing fan noise and temperature...
Hey Ian, cheers for that info. Do you play any games or anything? have you under volted either the cpu or gpu? Is there any settings in the bios to lower cpu speed or power? I think the problem with these laptops is mostly people trying to run games at 100+ FPS. It just pegs both the CPU and GPU and as they share cooling, never ends well. Finger is LITERALLY hovering over the buy button but all im reading is overheating. I can deal with the fan noise but losing performance as the cooling cant keep up is just a deal breaker.
CPU is undervolted by -140mV with ThrottleStop, but doesn't really need it, GPU on stock voltages. No power settings in the BIOS, however Asus's fan/power profiles change the CPU power states; 35W, 40W, 45W Game occasionally, mostly used for engineering purpose. Think the older models had issue with cooling the new ones have 12V fans and a better cooling solution for the new 8th Gen hex core CPU. Not observed any throttling, holds a solid 3.9GHz on all cores for the CPU short term Turbo, and 3.6GHz for the CPU long term Turbo (steady state) Plays the likes of Witcher 3 all day, max setting FPS capped at 60, rips through Cinebench R15 scoring 1273CB . It's a decent notebook, can be noisy under max load (Overboost) fast SSD reading at over 3K, RAM runs at 2666MHz (32GB in mine). If you want to reduce the CPU performance ThrottleStop allows to disable Turbo or reduce the Turbo Ratio Limits on one of the profiles. CPU & GPU fans are independent, cooling system is shared to an extent, with what looks to be 2 heat pipes for the GPU and 2 heat pipes for the CPU & VRM's.
Awesome reply, thanks. Although these can run 144hz to be honest ill probably rock 60hz anyway. Funnily enough i also work in engineering! 60Hz for me is enough as I'm just a casual gamer. Also worth noting that as the notebook has G-Sync on the internal display it only use's the GTX 1070 so the battery life is poor. It's not a problem for me, and if your going to use the performance of such a portable no battery is going to hold up very long to such a powerful system.
Did you have any of the older models? I have a GL702VM and it gets quite hot with not very intensive use. The CPU also constantly throttles when gaming if I don't turn off Turbo. I'm looking at getting this one, just hope it has better thermal control.
this product being loud is probably because of g-sync. G-sync on laptops means that it doesn't have nvidia optimus. Having a g-sync panel in a laptop means that the screen is always running or displaying something based of or using the dedicated GPU itself, not the integrated one. You can search that up on the internet and you'll see that I'm stating facts from articles I personally read myself. Having G-sync in a laptop has its drawbacks. 1. Battery is not good due to always using the dedicated GPU instead of automatically changing to the integrated one(which is the feature of the nvidia optimus) 2. As you said in this video, it runs hot even at idle, due to the fans getting loud as if you were gaming due to G-sync feature.
It appeared to mostly be the CPU temps causing the fan noise, not GPU though. The GPU throttles heavily when idle so while yes not as efficient as iGPU, it's still nowhere near gaming load.
TechteamGB did u have it at high performance mode? If yes then that could've been the cause of it. Due to always being at high frequencies. But still, being on the lowest of the GPU, it is still a powerful gpu, like a serious monster one, so it can never even approach or reach the efficiency of an integrated one.
i guess you can turn off manually your dedicated graphics for the intel-integrated uhd 630 ( AT LEAST IN LINUX ) so g-sync will not force you to use only gtx1070

Which one is better - this one, or Alienware 17 R5 1070?
Alienware
Can you still hear the loud fans when you're using headphones connected to the laptop whilst gaming?
Not really.
That's fine for me then. Will pick this laptop up at the end of the month, thanks for the solid review.
Hi did you get the laptop? Or not yet .. ?
That gaming centre App on mine causes the computer to crash every Single time I open it. It goes to that blue screen of death or whatever people call it. Then I need to hard reboot the computer to restart or it just sits on that blue screen forever.
can this laptop GL703GS support for external graphics dock? like asus XG-STATION-PRO or Razer Core v2 ?
It doesn't have thunderbolt 3 so no
with external graphics dock you can have the Asus Rog Zephyrus M for £50 more (£1550)
As far as I can see at 1:46 it has been tested in single channel: with a single 1x16GB bank of RAM, which is a bad idea: use dual channel RAM and boost performance +5-10% more
the laptop naming scheme is almost worse that screens
Its not hard.
g 6 core
v 4 core
m 1060
s 1070
i 1080
when its a g like gs, its the new 6 core cpus. vs is 4
core.
502 503 702 703 504. First number for size 5's are 15inch and 7's are 17inch 3's and 4's is version
The letter at the front denotes the type of laptop g for gaming, g byitself is the monster laptops, gl is the slimmer ones. I have nothing against their naming convention, they have been consistent with it.
@@ishadowdevisiras4359 Damn! Thanks. That's a huge help. I've had ASUS G for 8 years and never knew that.
oh yeah yeah
GM,GS,VS? Which one is it?
Lucifer o
How is it with VR?
It supports VR. Never tested with a headset though.
I'm sorry, I've just returned a HP Omen because CPU temp was hitting 97 Degrees, and GPU was averaging at 91... Your telling me this laptop runs hotter than that Brand New? I think I'll pass... You can't even play games with those temps. Expect throttling out the ass. smh.
Bro i need the same app game centre pls help me
hello, is the 1070 a Max-Q or not ? thx
No.
Mobile version
Not a max q a full gtx 1070
Does it have G-Sync??
Yes
Do it have Bluetooth?
Yes, it does.
The temperature not so bad it is a normal for slim laptop and 1070 and i will tell you the bad thing in this laptop first the high fan sound so noisy look like vacuum cleaner and the keyboard not full RGB I cannot custom every single key i just can choose 4 parts in the keyboard and the rear logo I hope if i can change the color but Unfortunately I can't this is all the bad things in the laptop any way the laptop I gave him 8.5/10 if you don't care about my mind take it you will feel it is the gorgeous gaming laptop ever in terms of speed , graphics and speakers 👍🏻
Really important for me
But this Asus strix scar 703gs on Amazon has 144hz panel but u mentioned it's 120hz?
Very similar.. I'm sure I just mispoke. Wouldn't worry about it.
@@TechteamGB no you didn't mate, it does run a 120hz panel. There is another version that runs 144 but costs more wonga
but nevertheless, good product and good video mate. ;)
On amazon its on offer for £700 but I'm not sure Wether it's legit lol
Jack Taylor can you send me the link?
@@raphaelsmeenk2750 it's a 3rd party on amazon which has little reviews so I won't bother lol
Jack Taylor what do you mean with that?
@@raphaelsmeenk2750 it's not being sold directly by Amazon , so another company is selling it through amazon's site, this means that Amazon isn't selling that product but it appears on there site. So it means that it could just be a scam and they are not selling what they advertise. I heard a story where a candle company in Iraq were advertising £2000 gaming computers for £700 lol.
Jack Taylor Thanks for the info bud!
You want your Cake & eat it at the same time Life is full of Compromise Bit of Whining Great Video
I thought it was 144hz

Oh ok thx

Byron Bailey acording to notebookcheck the panel seems better than scar 2
Shit building quality
Its worst laptop never buy it if u want to save your bucks.Hate it and regret my decision of buying it😠😠
why ?
@@nginXiwnl i bought it 1 month ago n iam very disappointed with its heating problem n also system is crashing again n again in between while playing games like.watch dogs 2 n residential evil. Its fan also makes very loud noise.Performance is not that much good...it takes almost 3.5 hours for a full charge but it's battery hardly survive 1 hour even when iam not playing games.
Don't listen to this gay. Temperatures are fined I own one. This my second us I send one back due to crackling noise of a sound at high volumes. CPU never get hotter then 80-85 on full blow and GPU low 60-70 temperature wise.
