      Andre, thanks for this video. More of this format please! I’m confused though. At first you got me really excited as I really struggle to play standing up. I’d say I’m 30% worse! But then I looked at videos of people playing headless guitars sitting down and everyone plays normally. Guitar on the right leg and neck (roughly) horizontal. Plini for example plays like that. The only exception I found was Josh Meader. If I understand correctly you’re saying to use a classical guitar position as that way the neck will be 45 degrees even when seated. But you can practice in a classical position with any guitar. So is the advantage with a headless that you don’t need a footstool? Please follow up with a video demonstrating what you mean!

      I have a HILS Next, having owned and sold a Strandberg Boden Standard. The HILS Next's neck is essentially identical to that of the Schecter Omen Elite-6, apart from the headstock, and the bridge is somewhat like a Hipshot hardtail with the typical tuning pegs seen on headless guitars. This trades what I loved about the Stranderg (its neck) for a bridge design which is possible to adjust with my neuromuscular disorder, while keeping almost exactly the same body size and shape.

    In Rick Beato’s channel interview with Skunk Baxter . Baxter talks about why he always played sitting down. It’s a great story.
    Not exactly about the ergonomics but more about how you connect better with the instrument against your body. However, I’ve seen a hollow body jazz player try do sorta the opposite because how it affects the tone of that particular hollow instrument.

    Older, lame, newbie, wannabe player here. What a coincidence, Andre! I literally JUST received my first headless Kiesel today. A Zeus. And fully connected with your concept of 'compact'. I first experienced this feeling while noodling on a Jaguar in a Guitar Center. Now own two. SO much of our comfort and spirit comes from the shape and feel of the neck and guitar body. And every guitar is different. Many stimuli affect us. Sometimes even the smell of a guitar coming out of a case. Thanks for taking the time for discussing and posting! 👍

    Andre, new subscriber here. I haven't had a chance to view all your videos. But what is abundant on UA-cam guitar channels is gear reviews and playing/technique. And what appears to be missing, or in very short supply, is physical and mental wellness. You touched on it in this video regarding standing and sitting. As well as taking breaks to avoid burnout. 🤔

    I have not owned a headless guitar yet. But the light weight, ergonomics, and reduced chances of bashing into things around me are obvious reasons to get one. I attended a weekly guitar meetup for a couple of years, and having a compact guitar would have been a big plus in a crowded room of guitarists. I would assume that the chances of breaking the neck if you drop it are much lower than a guitar with a big headstock. Your review of the Boden Essential 6 made that the headless guitar I want to try first.

      I’m working on a very long detailed video about this topic. It’s going to take a few months. But I’ll get to it for sure. In a nutshell, there are exceptions to very rule and very small degrees of difference among greats that most people won’t notice.
      For example, if Plini plays in different postures seated vs standing he might be slightly better at one, but he’s so good that only he would know he’s slightly better or worst.
      I have a dedicated playlist on my on posture that may helpful for you. I also discuss it in more detail in my course.

    I agree with you, but I think that ultimately a lot of guitarists care more about appearance than ergonomics or other issues, and just don't like the look of headless guitars. There are a lot of traditionalists out there whose ideal guitar is literally from the '50s. I don't begrudge others their preferences, but I do wish that more people cared about practical elements of guitar design so that there was more of a market for it, and to spur innovation in guitar design.

    Headless need a bigger market for low to mid end market. HILS/HEX headless are very incredible for its price and Aguda new 2024 model with the angled jack like strandberg does are also a very great and comfortable while being cheaper than boden essential. The rest are either from brands that i barely know or just a very bad non branded one

    if the topic would only be about the concept of the headless design in regards of ergonomy and this fast feel of a "shorter" neck, i would agree. However, as someone who has been down this rabbit hole, even obsessed with it for quite some years, and looking at the market, i have to disagree. My biggest problem was finding a headless design with reliable free floating tremolo bridge and a somewhat reliable bridge, especially regarding tuning stability. Also, the limited options in stock guitars, for example regarding neck dimensions.

      A good, thoughtful comment. In my limited experience with one (1) headless Kiesel Delos, I really haven't had any issues with tuning stability. I also have a hardtail Zeus, and while I prefer the Zeus because it's lighter and there's no 60-cycle hum, tuning stability on both guitars has been excellent. I'm also not a heavy trem user, and those who are might have a different experience.

    In previous videos you have said your preference is no fanned frets or zero frets, but you have a Strandberg Salen in this video (which has both). Is the Strandberg Boden Essential still your preferred headless guitar, or have you now adjusted your preferences? Would you still recommend the Essential to most people?

    • @andrefludd
      @andrefludd  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes I’d still recommend the essential. If the guitar on my lap had a no zero fret straight fret option, I would buy it instead.

    • @laurenceede6881
      @laurenceede6881 3 місяці тому

      @@andrefludd Interesting, thank you. I feel like the Strandberg Boden Essential is almost the only guitar on that market that really works for the 'average' guitar player who wants all the ergonomic benefits of a modern headless (weight, body shape, etc.) without any of the more polarising features (zero fret, multi scale, etc.). All the other Strandbergs are too 'extreme spec' whilst the options from Ibanez and Kiesel miss out of the ergonomics (especially the leg cut away). That said, the market seems to be developing as, for example, the HILS 'NEXT' range which seems to be a budget copy of the Strandberg Essential. Personally, I'll be adding an Essential to my Christmas list in Future Dusk purple...thanks for all of the information 👍

    imho the reason why the freetboard is easier to navigate is because the 'scale length' has been moved back to the rear edge of the guitar.

  • @Mr.Wobblers
    @Mr.Wobblers 3 місяці тому

    agree with everything. compact, lightweight, balanced. usually more centred on the body/easier to navigate & no neck dive. there's still room for traditional guitars but headless DO feel much more...synnerdised! annihilation is a much better book triology. highly recommend it.

    I think it's ironic that many 'traditionalist' people who object to the futuristic, ergonomic design of Strandberg guitars play Strats...which when they were first launched were arguably the original futuristic looking, ergonomically designed guitars (especially compared to other guitars available in the the 1950s i.e. Les Pauls etc). One might even say that a Strandberg Boden is just the current ultimate evolution of the Strat design philosophy.

    Big weakness for me with Strandberg, given that I play exclusively fingerstyle, is their very narrow nut widths at 1.65. Even the more standard 1.68 is a touch narrower than I like. My guitar has 1.692 which may seem to be insignificantly wider but I find it actually makes a huge difference. I switch up and back between electric and classical guitar and I find with the 1.69 nut there's no transition for my right hand to accommodate. It feels equally comfortable on either. Additionally, I do prefer thicker necks and so I don't know how many headless guitars offer a thicker neck and a decent nut width for my tastes.

  • @geraldharland4357

    I am still unclear how you feel about the fan frets. I know you really like the new Strandberg straight fretted essential model
    I would think playing in classical position the moderately fan frets would be more ergonomic.
    I think guitarist have worried so much about tone that the ergonomics have taken a back seat for too long. Unlike most instruments, the guitar is probably one of the few that the ergonomics can be varied in several ways.

    I know you haven't been a fan of fanned frets... but check out the Ormsby Goliath anyways. It doesn't have the one directional fan of the rc-one (I have that too) and the stupid strandberg fanning that goes the other way. It has the neutral fret at the 9th so it is most normal in the middle, the only extreme is the first fret, and if you try and get used to it, I think the fanning is more ergonomic because it follows the angle of your fingers, you just can't play it with your original muscle memory. If you keep your fingers parallel to the frets as they fan, you'll notice that it is a more comfortable and natural motion. Best guitar I have ever played.

    To be honest, today's guitar market is full of bs. There are no reasons to buy 90% of guitars that are currently on the market. Fender and gibson are re-releasing the same guitars for 60 years. They add a slimmer neck profile and call it "modern". With the rise of new headless design, started by strandberg, continued by kiesel and now made affordable by Eart and Hex (Hils) guitars which offer twice or thrice the features at the fraction of a price - almost any other instrument becomes obsolete, just from the ergonomics perspective alone. I'm not even going to get into the "vintage"/relic/authentic bs that guitar companies are trying to sell us. Current digital audio technology also is moving forward rapidly. 10 years ago a desired rig would be a tube amp with a vintage les paul/strat. Now it's a nice light ERGONOMIC headless guitar with a quad cortex or a helix-type device. A Katana for those who want a simple complete package. Let's move forward everyone, maybe then the rest of the industry will respond with innovation.
    A very revealing and much needed video. Thanks.
