BETTER than an Orton Effect!

  • Have you ever wondered how specific photos just have that "look"? You know, the look that makes you say, "WOW! That Photo is INCREDIBLE! They must have a nice camera!"
Haha, truth be told, it's never really the camera, is it?
I have found that many images that have that look draw me into specific areas of the photo to grab my attention. This is a DELIBERATE action!
There are many ways to grab the viewer's attention, but today I will reveal my secrets for building a fabulous glow. I use this technique in nearly every one of my images, and I couldn't live without it.
Some people call this the "Orton Effect," but this is not really an Orton Effect because it uses a different process. I prefer to call it a glow or radiance effect.
    Enjoy and remember to experiment!

Thank you for continually thinking out of the box and sharing those techniques with us, Blake. There is now way I will be using the "Rudis Glow" on my portraits without mentioning this video. Very impressed with the level of refinement this workflow offers and love the creative possibilities from those solid color/channel mix layers. Another masterclass, Sir!

@@f64Academy please keep it up, your sheer passion really shines through! One question: any reason why I should not change the blending mode of the initial base blur layer to SoftLight vs Linear? In my experience, the effect is a little too strong on color saturation/contrast in landscape shots. Maybe a matter of taste, but the shadows also lose texture and block up on my very contrasty scenes. I am hesitant to over-use the curve/level adjustment to retrieve those shadow details when using Linear Light. Thanks again!

When experimenting with the luminance values through curves etc how do you know when you have pushed your highlights too far and they are clipped. I am familiar with the highlight warning in lightroom but never sure in PS particularly when processing for print?

    • @f64Academy

True, but this is for those images that need that extra time. That's kinda like saying all cake is better without icing, sure some cakes are, but not all of them 😎
