Sand Tiger Sharks of North Carolina (They PROTECT the fish?)

  • Jonathan heads to North Carolina to explore the offshore shipwrecks of the "Graveyard of the Atlantic" which have become home to Sand Tiger sharks. The sharks are unwitting bodyguards to small fish seeking protection from predators and have developed a clever way to hide from the fish and to hover with perfect buoyancy control.

Also the hammerhead bumping into the camera is hilarious, i love whoever edits these.

Simply Magnificent! Jonathan, you and your team never fail to deliver the most wonderful and highly informative footage.
    Thanks a lot for that.
I very much loved the music piece accompanying this video. This makes me ask you a few questions... How is the selection of the very right piece of music is selected and matched to the footage? Is it a long process? If so, would you be able to, perhaps, make a short video about it?
Also, would you ever consider making a video (or more) about 'the making of a documentary'? How ideas and subjects come up. How is the planning process discussed and listed. How researches are done. How is the documentary put together.
Hehehe... I'm sure that the first thing you'd tell me is that the list of things to be done is endless. But this is just an Idea of mine that I wanted to share. If you think I'm asking too much and such thing is hard to do, do not worry if you say no. I am still going to be here.
    Thanks for everything, mates.

Hey Mark, thanks for the comments. The music is written specifically for the action. When we have finished the edit/narration and have what is called "picture lock" (meaning, we are done making changes and the picture is not going to change) we export a quicktime of the segment and send it to our film composer Bruce Zimmerman. He writes the music precisely to the edit. He decides where to put the music, (where to lay off the music too) and writes music that fits the scene, or helps create the mood we are going for. Usually Bruce knows exactly what we are going for, but sometimes he will have a question and call me to talk about a scene. For example, you can give a very different feel to the same exact scene by doing music that is humorous versus dramatic versus whimsical. Music is extremely important in giving the view the right mood. Bruce is in CT and I'm in MA, so we rarely see each other in person, but due to the convenience of the internet it's very easy for us to work together.

Hello Mark...I am the composer of the music for all the Blue World episodes. I am very glad you liked the score for this segment. The music is all composed from scratch by me. Jonathan sends me the video and I compose the music in my music studio. He usually loves the music but sometimes asks me to change stuff! That's okay, it is so much fun watching the footage and composing the music.

    • @marksaid6587

      Hello there, Mr B Zimmerman.
Nice to meet you. Nice to see the creative minds and hands that are in and behind the scenes.
Thanks for sending me the link, Jonathan (or anyone form the Team if it was someone else), as I haven't come across it yet. It was posted before I discovered this channel and am still going through the videos bit by bit but I watched this now and... *Oh My Word*!
I knew things like these are a lot of planning and work but I never realised that excellent quality documentaries needed *tonnes* of work, time, equipment and people! No wonder you are an award winning team. You are all terrific!
What hit me the most was that you lot never fail to have fun and enjoy yourselves as much as possible, even when sometimes things don't go according to plan.
Keep up the fantastic work, everyone.
And thank you all very much for replying to my questions.

In South Africa, we often refer to Sand Tiger Sharks as "Ragged-Toothed Sharks", or "Raggies" for short. They're renowned among divers as being very laid back and calm animals, easy to swim with when compared to most sharks.

I'm not sure why this particular shark has so many names. In Australia they are called "Grey Nurse Sharks" which confuses them with Nurse sharks, a completely dissimilar species. But Australians are always clever with local names!

I am totally turned around about sharks. Because of your series. But not at all about Orcas. I lived and fished in the San Juan Islands and I have had my own close-up view of a wild Orca. All by myself in a ferocious rainstorm, no life jackets (I was a senior in high school, like duh) a HUGE Orca breached right beside me in a little dingy. I cut the engine immediately because the stories of the old fishermen told me Orcas get pissed off with engine noise and will knock a little boat over only to snack on the contents of said boat, mainly the humans. Human in this case.
Absolutely breathtaking close up of a wild Orca. My adrenaline was never so pumped as that encounter. Even in the San Juans Orca was a rare sighting. Scary smart. Scary huge. Scary big teeth and power. Humility was the main outcome. Sharks? Your series has completely turned me around. Thank you so very much for that...but I think you will need to use that shark cage to safely document the Orcas. If THAT. Orcas are way too smart to become kitty cats with humans. They are NOT dolphins nor are they sharks. They will bludgeon first and remorse later. I'll never get out of my mind that clip with the seal and Orca. I don't want to lose you!

    • @BlueWorldTV
      @BlueWorldTV  3 роки тому +1

I agree....Orcas are serious business. They rip the livers out of great white sharks just for a snack. DO NOT mess with Orcas. That being said, Orcas also fall into two types. There are the ones that eat marine mammals, and there are the ones that eat fish. I would be OK with getting into the water with the fish eating types.

    • @stormysampson1257

I love sand tigers. When you go to an aquarium, it's funny to see the people assume by its appearance (long sharp teeth with a vicious grin) that this shark is aggressive and nasty. But then, you realize that sand tigers are actually pretty docile, and almost beautiful. Swimming with one of these is a MUST for any scuba diver :)

BlueWorldTV that's what I've heard! Tell cameraman Todd I support his decisions and whatever he decides to do (and that I'd make a decent buddy...) haha, let me know!

I feel like the music in this season has been extra magical.. @u@
I've never heard of sharks creating buoyancy before, I'm gonna look that up! Also I noticed some jacks in the background with eye stripes: I've never seen that before! Is that a regional thing? Or were they changing colour and "putting on makeup" for whatever reason? It looks really pretty!

Thanks for the comments. I really feel like Bruce has been killing it with the music this season. This episode especially.

It's a greater amberjack. Common pelagic fish worldwide.

The sand tiger sharks have the longed, jagged, and unorganized teeth.

Video is awesome as always c:
But actually I'm so sad about living in Saint Petersburg. It is a nice city but I can't swim with any exotic fish I'd love to swim with. It is very expensive for me also, I'm only 13...
Anyway, I loooove your videos, please don't ever stop :з
