- So you have a book deal... and a day job. How do you juggle it all? What are some of the challenges that might come up? What's the difference between writing with a day job pre & post deal?
I'm covering topics such as: When do you tell your day job about your author life/book career? How do you manage traveling for your author career with your day job? (both with taking days off, and managing anxiety) How do you deal with deadlines for your book AND the work load at your job?

3:45 "Even if you dislike your job say you love your job" AMEN.
Now that i am retired, I write, or at least i am trying to complete my damn novel. When I remember how tired out my job left me, it astonishes me how some people can balance a job, and, frequently, a young family, with a writing career.
So happy for you that you have a job that can let you travel for your other job as an author! You're living the dream, Alexa! Keep it up!
jesus christ US holiday time is brutal! I'm in the UK and we get like a month as standard, and most places in Europe are more than that to my knowledge!
Love your content. I was living my writer dream about 10 years ago, then life stepped in and changed everything. It’s been 6 years since I’ve written anything and now I have a demanding full time job. However, my heart wants to write again. This is super helpful and encouraging. Looking forward to reviewing all your content! 😊
I already know what you mean about having two lives. I work in HR at the state government and then have a whole illustration/ comics practice too! I call the government job my “Clark Kent” job.
I’ve gone to coffee shops after work to work on my graphic novel and comic writing too. It is a good hack! I also find that waking up before work helps too, bc you have the most brain power. Going to bed on time is crucial for all of this!
yes please please vid on travel and anxiety...and how much publicity will a publisher require from an author...is this part of the contractual obligation?
It's amazing you had all the support on your day job when the amazing time of your writing career began to grow!
Very interesting!
I know I've had jobs over the years where when I finally made it home, I felt like a zombie walking through my house. Just too tired to do anything else. I'm very lucky these days. I teach English at a community college nearby. I love it! And it doesn't drain me much. I still have lots of creative energy and regular work energy, too.
Thanks for making a video on what it can be like for all of us that have the dream of doing exactly what you're going through right now. Awesome! Awesome and helpful.
Take care.
Jeff
I stack shelves for a living, once a week. My second job is awful and I'd prefer to leave it.
Even a $10k deal would earn me more in 6 months of writing than working at both of those.
Thank you for the insight.
Thank you for always being honest and open in your videos. This was really interesting. I'm looking forward to your travel video because I get really anxious when traveling too! -Mel
Alexa, you're amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy days to make these videos, they mean so much! Can't wait to read your book!
Love your eye makeup.
I love all of your honesty and advice! Hopefully I can take it to heart practically someday. Lol. Well, end game is to be an author full time if I'm lucky enough, but that's another thing. Lol
Alexa could you please do a video regarding keeping your publishing career totally separate from your day job. I have a pseudoname and my fiction is based on work events (law enforcement)
Great video! I have a very similar schedule you described and have felt bad as I just needed time away as I deal with work stuff. Balance is hard. Noe that you have your next deal do you follow a similar schedule? Have you felt you have been able to maintain through everything going on?
Vaguely off topic, but not really, average annual leave (vacation days) in Australia is 4 weeks. Jussayin.
I work in a restaurant, so. LolI asked three days off for a book con and they're like "k"
Two weeks? In Sweden we have 25 days per year.
you are quite probably a good bite of a writer but ma'am you are fo sho the mistress of makeup.. followers of #beautytube do not know what they are missing...
I'm worried because I work in a teaching environment. if im gone, the kids miss a bit in their own development.
I know that there are so many more factors to consider when considering self-publishing vs traditional publishing but do you think that self-publishing may be a better option for aspiring writers like me who dont have much flexibility with time? Im a teacher so my time off is pretty much locked in based on the school calendar which is winter, spring and summer break. And to be honest those are the only times that I even have to write
Personally I think that might make self-publishing even tougher, because you have to do ALL the work yourself (and find the time), and self-publishing rewards higher volume--putting out lots of work pretty quickly. Traditional publishing will do 80% of the stuff for you, regardless of timing. A lot of teachers write books and get published and AFAIK, make it work. I recommend checking out Kim Chance's channel/asking her this very question, because she has juggled this! (she's not teaching the year of her debut b/c she moved, but she did all her drafting and revising as a full time teacher!)
Your video cover (I forget what it’s called) has BOK instead of BOOK
OMG how embarrassing! Thanks for telling me. Can you tell I made that late at night after being up for 16 hours? haha. Oh dear... gotta fix it when I get home :/
do publishers pay for your expenses when they send you to these places?
Usually publishers don't pay for author travel--or do rarely. However, I have been fortunate that my publisher did pay for me to travel to all of these places. I am one of the lucky ones.
This was extremely helpful; thank you for such great videos! ^_^
