He apologized because he doesn't want anybody to think his actions were right by God's standard. He would want us to expect to do better than he could in that situation and not excuse him for what he did. It's actually beautiful that he would not only apologize to God but, to everyone for not being the witness that he believes he should be. That's a testament to his love for Christ. I just pray that God will heal his family too.

You didn't "curse" in the recording because you knew that you were being watched. In psychology, it's called the Hawthorne Effect. It's the idea that people will change their behavior when they know that they are being watched. You knew that you were being watched simply because you knew that you were the one recording. This would be my response to Kirk's son. He knows who his father is personally. A human being just like the rest of us. But to exploit that, that's not cool. From this point on, Kirk should ONLY talk to this dude face to face. Nonetheless, I don't know the nuances of it all, but these real life scenarios can be used by the church to help the church to become more authentic. This is where you turn the preaching voice off, where the music should stop, the sermon should change and where church should stop being about feeling good but doing good. We have to learn how to deal with real life. Kirk's son may not listen to his father in this season but perhaps a rapport with someone else can be developed to help bring Kirk and his son closer to Jesus so that they can then become closer to one another. I pray for the forgiveness necessary so that this can happen.

My first reaction when I heard his apology was he didn’t apologize to his son.
He doesn’t need to apologize to his audience.
Personally I feel he and his son’s reaction was performative. At this point take a break and get mutually counseling or cut ties. Life is too short to keep going back and forth with a toxic family member.
