This is another classic solo, much of what I have not heard before. He's playing great and the solo is perfectly paced which is his signature for tension and release.
Just awesome! I'm kind of zippin' for air when listening to the solo... It's always hanging there but he always get it inside the tempo like an atomic clock.
What can I say? I'm a drum snob, and have never liked Gadd's soloing. To me his talent always laid in the parts he played for the songs he's a part of, as well his undeniable tasty sense of groove. I say all of this to contrast with the above performance, in which Gadd plays BUSILY - which I haven't seen in a long time, and it sounds great here. The solo had some very typically-Gadd licks, but it wasn't tired the way I expected it to be. Great video; thanks for waking me out of my jaded slumber...
This guy's soul is blended into the drum set. It's not technique, or anything else - IT'S STEVE GADD. What worries me are these icons getting older. We need to savor every moment.
I’ll stand by 6/8 for two reasons; 1. In 6/8, Gadd /accents on the 6th beat - where if this were notated and felt in in 3/4, accents would occur on every other 3rd beat, which is a more complex way to notate it. 2. Checking melodic and harmonic content in the head in 6/8 - both the melodic and harmonic content have movement (thus emphasizing strong beats) on 1 and 4. The accent on 6 adds rhythmic tension and interest! In Gadd’s solo, I he emphasizes offset beats, (for example beat 5 in one bar and beat 1 in the bar after the next - seemingly creating a bar of 5 beats followed by one of 7), and those different accents turn time around enough that the listener may lose 6/8 - bur neither Gadd nor the band ever does! Genius and utter mastery no matter how one counts or notates it!
Well that’s an excellent explanation.... but I’m friends with Walt Fowler the trumpet player and he said he plays it in 3/4 but Steve does plays it 6/8
I usually get some hate for this opinion, but, to my ears/taste, Steve Gadd has developed his jazz playing style (as well as his choices of gigs and musicians) since the 1970s and 80s. To me, he sounds way better today, with a more listening, sensitive, elastic and dynamic style.
Simply the most 'musical' drummer to every pick up the sticks..age is like a bill collector always compelled to take its toll. The bill collector is a fan of Steve Gadd taking as little as it can while still leaving us all a lot to enjoy.
Absolutely incredible. S Gadd has been one of most poignant impact musicians in my life and career. It has always brought me joy to watch my students bask in his music and playing. Bird
Steve Gadd my hero!!! Jeff Porcaro ,Mike Porcaro and Carlos Vega in my heart !!!

You can feel this smooth compelling rhythmic pulse even on this tiny device speaker! Amazing performance!!

Steve has always been best grooving within a song and he has been playing the same licks for 40 years. He's still pretty good for 74.
Wow! Steve!!
love it!!
I wish the tour had come close to me.
Geez! This is addictive - I can't stop watching this video. The old devil is at his best!
good one!
Sweet !!
This grey-haired monster behind the drum kit! My oh my!
Could be the great John Tropea on guitar?

BEAUTIFUL DRUM DANCE
47 mark Gadd Slows just a tad, look at the keyboardist as he catches it. Great sound, cymbals and drums seamlessly intertwines.
正統派だね。
What the heck is the time signature...I am usually good at figuring this out, but egad!
I’m reading 6/8.
It’s 3/4 or 6/8 just depends how you count it

Goldeneye Productions - I totally get that.
His decision on that makes the feel even more interesting!
Izzat Chieli?
Cool "african" 6 ....Walt Fowler killing it as usual...

Gadd è sempre un grande!!
A true drumming master...what a sensitive and talented musician who chose the clunky drum set like me to express music and love
