  • In this video, I will share my disappointment about leaving my cousin in his brand new Cannondale Synapse on a 17-mile bike ride in Raleigh, NC. Riding a Recumbent Trike Ice VTX is a great way to lose weight and stay in shape.

    Thank you for this wonderful video. It's interesting to hear from an accomplished rider like yourself that a recumbent can be competitive with a conventional bike. I have started riding a Terra Trike Tandem Pro with my special needs son. We have a great time on it, and can keep up pretty well with the casual riders on two wheel bikes. I'm subscribing and look forward to seeing more of your videos.

    I used to ride a Synapse. I now ride a 2 wheel recumbent. I will never go back to a df. The speed and the lack of pain are great.

    Have an ICE Sprint X 26 RS tour trike. Like the look of the VTX but concerned about how rough the ride will be in the UK. You seem to ride on nice smooth roads and paths.
    YOu are more airodynamic than an upright, buthave 50% more rolling resistance due to 3rd wheel

    Good trikes come from North Carolina, too! Though I love my Cornwall special.
    Many of the simpler, lower ones compete with the sport trikes , all of them are >32 lbs.
    Speed mostly seems to be legs and tires.

      @@TC-yx1qt NO, they don't make the white anymore. I even emailed and asked if they can do a custom color like AZUB. They seemed a bit offended by the question. Utah Trikes will paint/ powder coat your bike any color though. I think the VTX will make a great touring bike if you can get a decent setup for it. I would use the Banana Bags, plus a rear carrier.

      Have a touring bike with similar shimano deore gears to a trike. Wouldn't call it fast and snappy, more like comortable and boring. The VTX can have Ultegra gears, but then it is over 10 lbs heavier than a road bike.

    You also have to understand 3 wheels are more rolling resistance than 2...get some thinner tires and add a front faring to the trike and you will notice a big difference

    I go on my recumbent trike also faster. Mine is heavy, but I noticed that the low air resistance has a very big influence. More tgan the weight has.
    I can also go fast for a longer time.
    Next time, let him go in front. He has already no advantage as he rides behind you, because you are so low, so he is still in the wind.

  • @MishaDaBear
    @MishaDaBear 3 роки тому

    Yes you are narrower than drop bars, but the track width of most trikes are about the same width as a mountain bike handle bar. The only real difference is that we are forced to have our right wheel furthure to the right.
    When I ride one of my "D" bikes I ride about 1 meter from the edge to permit swerves to the edge. On city streets that action is limited on my action bent where I am forced to strattle a grate with the front wheels and hit it with the rear.

      @@themotivatedrider3840 Your video shows your helmet moving back and forth sideways . that generally indicates a movement of pushing on the pedals with force at a low cadence. I could be wrong. When you look at a professional cyclist you will notice nothing above the hips move . Riders arond here in high gears and low rpm are moving their bodies as if the upper body can aid the legs!

    • @themotivatedrider3840
      @themotivatedrider3840  3 роки тому

      I got you, so Bruce is moving your upper body good or no good? I have heard or one of the comments was you want your upper body to be still as your lower body is doing all the work. I see it both ways.

    • @brucewmclaughlin9072
      @brucewmclaughlin9072 3 роки тому

      @@themotivatedrider3840 Well far from me being competitive or professional, you will find that any movement of your upper body does not correlate to improved speed, but it sure will help on corners as you definitely need that counter weight . It took me well over a year to get my cadence to a steady 90 rpm and it helps that I have 153 mm crank arms as they give me all the power and an easy spin. It is the equivalent of doing a half squat vs a full squat.

      I found it to be comfortable, and you’re right about the seat being narrow but it seems to accommodate 5’9 215 lbs frame. The other thing to take into consideration is this is only my 2nd trike my 1st trike was a terra trike rambler, so I don’t have a lot to compare it to. Although I did test drive the catrike with the 700 rear wheel and I found that to be pretty comfortable as well.

    The trikes are quite a lot easier to maintain a good speed on than the uprights. On a sprint it is no contest.... they win every time ....but on longer rides the trikes will climb more easily for the rider with a lot less body stress and be able to maintain speed in a climb due to the fabulous gearing present on the higher end trikes. The longer rides are the real proof...we can maintain speed better and average a higher speed and complete the ride feeling much better. On a straightaway flat sprint...party over. They win. BTW..... I see the ladies got you some riding clothes. Ditch the cotton shirt....too hot and retains perspiration.....get the lycra tops....especially in the hot summer season.keep up the good work. Cross over and monitor other triking UA-cam channels ...there are many great ones.....post comments and refer them to your station to increase viewership. Best wishes. Mark

      its true that from standstill a df, even a mtb, are faster than bents. they are generally lighter and less cumbersome and riders can stand up. but recumbents are faster sprinters above 20mph as they have the longer legs (more aero and higher gearing). standing to sprint on a df is going to be a bigger disadvantage than advantage over a certain speed threshhold as aero takes over as the biggest factor. but trikes make pretty good sprinters from standstill too, apart from the weight disadvantage, as you dont need to worry about balance and can just brace your back against the seat, hold the bars and really lay down the watts. power transfer on a trike is probably rather more than what a df rider can produce when sitting, but less than when they are standing

      Slower on hills close to the same as my "D" bikes on flat, much faster in windy conditions! If you are a weak "D" biker a trike will not make you suddenly speedy. With that said an E-assist might permit that!
