I just bought Govee, and it's really awesome. Yes, you can upload a gif or non-animated picture. The only drawback that i experienced was a dead LED. Support has been very helpful and is sending me a whole new curtain.
I’m guessing the Govee lights don’t have a ‘Layout Learning’ option like the twinkly? I like that I can mould them to whatever I’m putting them on and then scan the new layout so that patterns etc work.
Has anyone mentioned Twinkly has a 3d mapping function via phone camera within the app which does allow for better pixel type mapping? You can just throw a bunch of twinkly lights over/around an object and create a 3d animated light effect….
And it's just as terrible. I used it last year on my tree and wasn't convinced. Still, they look nice, but much like in this video, don't expect any real accuracy like in the ads/marketing.
Great review and comparison. Always like to hear both the good and bad points. Love the review but many of the animations that you were trying to do on Twinkly are for their Squares product. I have 6 or 7 of their curtains running together and it's quite impressive but still can't do the animations you were selecting. However, as the Govee lights are of more fixed position and they do have 2x as many LEDs compared with Twinkly, I may be replacing my Twinkly setup with the Govee (although you can't set up more than 3 Govee curtains together). Also Twinkly allow for 3D set ups (not sure if Govee have that). I guess products for different uses.
I’m a bit confused, this video seems to miss the entire point of the twinkly lights, the camera based layout. Tho I have not actually used it I believe it allows the twinkly product to play animations even with the lights physically laid out in any patter, which makes them very flexible. These both seem like good products but I don’t really feel like they even compete in the same category as each other.
Nope. They are both curtain lights, designed to be hung from the top down. Yes you could technically hang the twinkly lights in a mess and the camera would locate them, but no one would because they are in the shape of a curtain. What you're saying makes sense for their Christmas tree lights that would be all over the place.
Full disclosure - I own products of both brands. Last holiday season, I re-strung an old pre-lit 12ft Christmas tree. This tree had those ancient incandescent bulb strands. I got tired of tearing up my thumbs replacing 100s of tiny bulbs every year, so I upgraded to twinkly LEDs. The tree got around 2700 lights, but this was due to me catching a killer sale. IF Govee had a similar product at the time, I probably would have gone that route first since I already have a bunch of their products. HOWEVER, the Twinkly strand lights are amazing IMO. I was able to link all the strands to one group and control them as one item to be seen by Alexa or HomeAssistant. Being able to capture the whole tree via the camera scanning function allowed me to create some truly amazing effects. I think it really depends on the type of use case and what effects you are going for. Trying to compare one strand of holiday style curtain lights to the fixed grid type construction is not as a direct comparison of say, a Hue bulb to another brand of the same style light bulb. 'Trash' is a bit harsh even after seeing your review of both brands. Just MHO. Overall I always appreciate your takes, and I'm glad Twinkly actually has some real competition now in Govee. The only negative I had was the price when they are not on sale. Govee even started with some killer outdoor holiday light options last year, but where uber expensive and out of stock everywhere. Hoping the competition brings some killer options to shield my wallet from.
I have twinkly 400 led string iirc. It looks fine but has a few serious drawbacks: - some LEDs malfunction when in subzero (centigrade) temperatures - they usually light up in magenta color regardless of what they should be. When temperature increases, they function normally. The lower the temperature, the more lights get f$d up. - i have problems pairing the strings with the app via the router. I manage it eventually but it takes multiple attempts. - they skimped on gradients, so color changes are quite stepped, one could do much better and smoother
Yeah. I’ve never been on this channel before. Someone mentioned Govee lights to me and I wanted to see what they look like. I never heard of them or these Twinkly lights by brand name before. It just seemed like this person was trying to talk down the twinkly lights as much as possible rather than show uses they would be better for. Despite that, everything I can think of that I’d actually use lights for would be better with the twinkly type.
Not expecting much, but wonder if the Twinkly Curtain Lights might work better if the lights are set up in pegboard for regularize the separation and alighment. Presuming the bulbs even fit with the pegboard, which I suspect isn't a given.
A fair few Twinkly owners have used pegboards for this reason. It's easy to slate Twinkly, as the market leader, as Govee has the benefit of seeing what's already been done and then just copying it and enhancing it. I'm pretty sure Govee is a larger company than Twinkly, so has the resources for it.
I purchased two of these, after watching your video. The problem I am having is that although they can be linked in the app to play together, I was not aware that the power can't be linked. You have to plug in each individually, which is a drawback when using them outside. BTW, I watch every week and always enjoy your videos.
Can you ask govee why they didn't include the lan api. And if they are going to bring it to this product later? Seems really dumb they left this product out of the lan api. They shouldn't be releasing new products at this point that skip local control.

I’m so fucking happy that u brought this up, I legit spent 3 hours putting twinkly lights outside around my house and none of the animations are looking how they r suppose to look. No matter how I arrange them. I’m definitely disappointed!!
Hi Paul, The "Local" mode on the Govee strips. How does that work? THinking about getting some as a backdrop for my band and taking them to gigs... but that would mean not having Alex, a Zigbee hub or even wifi (other than off my phone). think it would be a really cool affect but it might not be possible. thanks
I bought twinkly lights today and I’m a little sad that I did some research before. But I’ll stick to mine for now since they aren’t bad and look good for my type of windows because the Govee lights would be a little off. Still happy but a little dissatisfied
Great timing Paul. I was about to buy a set of twinkly lights to set up in the roof of a retractable gazebo in the garden. I wanted to use a mode that emulates a star lit sky among other things and also wanted a music mode to sync with the RGB lights in the bar (it looks better than it sounds lol) now I will do a bit more research on the Govee version. I have to confess I have had some patchy results with my current Govee products that sometimes just loose WIFI connectivity and have to be set up again!
Twinkly lights are a nice thing for christmas trees but a failure to create pixel art or any form of recognisable objects. Nice for changing colours, but these new Govee lights look amazing and I love the integration of scenes for she who must not be named.
Im honestly not surprised that the govee is the better option. Pretty much the only reason why I got rid of my govee stuff is because they were incapable of getting white right via my smart speaker (no matter what, it would always be blueish)
Hi I am a old twinkly user and decided to give you a try. model 1.00.17.12 your lights are much brighter and i connected to bluetooth and wifi with no problems the question i have is this can you select different scenes and play them in a sequence & adjust the time between changes ? Also when i select a national flags and choose The UK or any other flag nothing seem to happen many thanks cheers Kevin

Very disappointed to see yet another Govee product on your channel which has failed to actually come to the UK market, I was excited to see a brand I recognised releasing the smart kettle in your video 2 months ago but yet it is still not available to buy on Amazon UK, this video again is 3 weeks old and the Amazon UK listing is not available, Swan launched their smart kettle before prime day so I now have a Swan smart kettle instead, at this rate I doubt these curtain lights will even be available by christmas, what is the point of watching your reviews if they don't actually release it to the rest of us 🤷♂️ p.s. love your content but severely disappointed in the lack of availability here
Add the DIY mode to a scene in the Govee app. In the tabs that run along the top select the home labelled home, and then in the second section down you'll see your scenes. Hit the plus button and follow the process through 👍
I picked one of these up on September 13th, and as of today (11/3) it has a bad LED. It's showing red instead of the scene color 😢 Guess we'll see how their warranty process is.
I just got the Govee curtain. They are almost TOO bright. I have them set to 1% and it lights up my whole living room. I hope they allow them to be dimmer…
I have both, just bought the govee, but tbh, the build in animations on the twinkly are way better. govee has a lot, but only a few which I actually want to use. Im going with twinkly and may return the govee

That your figures could drop is ridiculous, the site is informative, varied and very funny. Yet theres some guy eats a giant breakfast once a week and gets 3 million subs, ( no offence to the eating guy, I'm just making a point ) its crazy. You should be up in the 10 millions.. At least. I only have some wifi bulbs and a few wifi plugs worked by echo from my phone hotspot, but l like to keep up with whats new, and mostly for the laughs. Keep going Paul I'm sure it will turn around.
Until Govee gets proper HomeKit implementation i will avoid them. Twinkly Christmas tree lights while pricey are amazing - seems the curtain app is missing a lot of features the tree lights have.

I saw this the next day, and ordered them at the end. Then it's my birthday so I ordered another one. Too bad I have to wait til tomorrow to put them both up.
There is nothing better than Govee, even Phillips Hue can't compete with Govee, even at a cheaper price than others. Or does anyone here have a different opinion? I would love to see which manufacturer can compete with Govee.

I'm going to pick up a set of the Govee lights because I know, as a set of curtain lights, they're going to be great fun. But @paulhibbert you're being a bit disingenuous with regards to what the Twinkly lights are capable of and why that makes them seem worse than the Govee ones for THIS application. The fact the Twinkly lights allow you to map each individual bulb across multiple light sets in 3D makes them WAY more impressive. I've got 5 sets that go on the front of the house at Christmas and seeing everything synced together as a single massive light canvas is worth every penny! Don't get me wrong, I love my Govee lights too, but you're reviewing apples and oranges here.
I honestly don't know what you mean. I saw no such option for a 3D mode, nor did I come across one whilst watching reviews from other people when doing my research?
@@paulhibbert on the Twinkly setup there's an option to scan the lights and map their 3D position. They do this by pulsating in a series of colours, and the app, through your camera, detects the location of each bulb. This means the lights can be draped over things (like for example a Christmas tree) and the animations still work. There's one for example of a reindeer running around the tree. What's better is that indidvidual lights can then be grouped into sets and the animations still transition across them perfectly. The very first video on YT if you search for "twinkly lights setup" is their own setup video showing the difference between the 2D and 3D mapping. Sooooo? You're absolutely bang on about the Govees in relation to their resolutions and setup as a curtain, and yes I agree their app is better. But honestly, try it again because the Twinklys offer something really special in their 3D mapping.
Ah. The twinkly light curtain (not the Twinkly brand) that I had hung out on my patio died a death when my son rather stupidly installed a dart board on top of them, and I’ve been thinking about options to replace them. These Govee ones look perfect! Well, except for the lack of local mode. Come on, guys, local mode isn’t hard to implement and it stops us being reliant on your continued existence. Just put it in, dammit!

Thanks dude. I thought that might happen. 😕 I'm not sure why but my new editing software handles audio that was only produced on the left channel differently from my old software. In Premiere pro I could switch it to mono and it would work on all devices, in final cut Pro switching it to mono sounds slightly different on a PC or TV, but still audible, but I think because mobile devices are monaural they are losing the audio altogether. I have absolutely no idea why. I shall get this fixed!
@@paulhibbert Da Vinci Resolve is the answer to all your video problems. Not looked back since I changed from the "also rans". The free version only has some of the more esoteric functions missing from the full version - I tried the free version for a couple of months and then bought the full version. If it's good enough for people like Marques Brownlee and major film/video companies it's good enough for me! I even wnt on to buy the Blackmagic Speed Editor keyoard. Fantastic!

I tried for hours before going back to PP. I am glad to have finally made the shift to an Apple machine and FCP, my editing has sped up loads. Just gotta fix this one last issue!

they aren't though. They are only better in a specific scenario he set up. Govee isn't bad but Twinkly you can lay out the string in any manner you wish and map it. Twinkly also connects to 3rd party software.

Thanks Thomas, I appreciate that. My mental health has been spoken about on my videos before as you know, and I find that the only way to stay above some of the mudslinging is to make fun of it in return and post it on social media. When someone tells me I'm not funny, or that I'm stupid, it isn't constructive, those people are out to cause me pain and that unfortunately touches a nerve for me. As someone who was bullied at school I never had the chance to stand up for myself because it would have resulted in more of the same physical violence that I was already receiving from the gang of lads that were chasing me between lessons after I had stood up to them on behalf of a friend. That one act of kindness on my part was rewarded with 2 years of inescapable mental and physical abuse. As an adult I often feel that I am expected to continue to take abuse from people without retaliating. My wife often tells me I should just delete the comments, or ignore them, but that leaves me alone with that negativity and it has at times caused me to stand in the shower for an hour in the morning because I don't want to go sit in front of my keyboard. By mocking these people I take that power away, and by posting it to my socials I am no longer alone with that negativity. I don't always respond, and I don't always post to my social media. I have on occasion even responded in a very genuine way to ask a person what's going on with their life that has caused them to lash out in this way, but no one ever replies. I appreciate some people are commenting because they have their own issues going on, but the vast majority of people are just entitled and don't view me as a person. I don't cope well with injustice and when someone says something deliberately hurtful to me just because they didn't enjoy the way I presented my information I either respond in kind or I stand in the shower for an extended period of time. I tend to choose the former otherwise there wouldn't be any videos for you guys to watch. As for how the Govee situation is playing out, I haven't done any work today. I feel very low and can't focus. Neesha and I are trying to get on top of my workload so that I can take a week to celebrate her birthday with her and thanks to this I am now a day behind and loaded with guilt. Just gotta put on my big boy pants and take each job at a time. Starting right now. Thanks again man. Sorry if I have given you cause to think badly of me.

I’ve always thought of Twinkly as a brand geared toward pre-teen girls whereas Govee just ”feels” like it’s grown-up but still fun. 🙌🏻

I used 2,400 of these seed pixels for a Christmas tree last year 😊.
They work really well outside and buying them in rolls of 5,000 lights is cheap.

I'm pretty sure Govee is a larger company than Twinkly, so has the resources for it.

I'm thinking about getting perforated hardboard, paint it Black and push the govee lights through every hole in the hardboard.
We need more dupes videos for Twinkly lights. They are nice but expensive. Mine only lasted a year .
I purchased two of these, after watching your video. The problem I am having is that although they can be linked in the app to play together, I was not aware that the power can't be linked. You have to plug in each individually, which is a drawback when using them outside.
BTW, I watch every week and always enjoy your videos.
Can you ask govee why they didn't include the lan api. And if they are going to bring it to this product later? Seems really dumb they left this product out of the lan api. They shouldn't be releasing new products at this point that skip local control.

THinking about getting some as a backdrop for my band and taking them to gigs... but that would mean not having Alex, a Zigbee hub or even wifi (other than off my phone). think it would be a really cool affect but it might not be possible. thanks

I bought twinkly lights today and I’m a little sad that I did some research before. But I’ll stick to mine for now since they aren’t bad and look good for my type of windows because the Govee lights would be a little off. Still happy but a little dissatisfied
Great timing Paul. I was about to buy a set of twinkly lights to set up in the roof of a retractable gazebo in the garden. I wanted to use a mode that emulates a star lit sky among other things and also wanted a music mode to sync with the RGB lights in the bar (it looks better than it sounds lol) now I will do a bit more research on the Govee version. I have to confess I have had some patchy results with my current Govee products that sometimes just loose WIFI connectivity and have to be set up again!

Does govee have a christmas tree light kit?
Twinkly lights are a nice thing for christmas trees but a failure to create pixel art or any form of recognisable objects. Nice for changing colours, but these new Govee lights look amazing and I love the integration of scenes for she who must not be named.
I have 650 twinkley lights on my tree and it starts to looks good and detailed but it does cost.
Do you know when they arrive in the UK yet?
Im honestly not surprised that the govee is the better option. Pretty much the only reason why I got rid of my govee stuff is because they were incapable of getting white right via my smart speaker (no matter what, it would always be blueish)

100% sure i can use ambilight on they govee ones? Though they werent compatible with that mode
i think your missing the main point of Twinkly lights... they are mappable and are great when used on a Christmas tree or hedge etc

Very disappointed to see yet another Govee product on your channel which has failed to actually come to the UK market, I was excited to see a brand I recognised releasing the smart kettle in your video 2 months ago but yet it is still not available to buy on Amazon UK, this video again is 3 weeks old and the Amazon UK listing is not available, Swan launched their smart kettle before prime day so I now have a Swan smart kettle instead, at this rate I doubt these curtain lights will even be available by christmas, what is the point of watching your reviews if they don't actually release it to the rest of us 🤷♂️ p.s. love your content but severely disappointed in the lack of availability here

My Alexa can’t set my curtain lights to a DIY! How did you do that?
Add the DIY mode to a scene in the Govee app. In the tabs that run along the top select the home labelled home, and then in the second section down you'll see your scenes. Hit the plus button and follow the process through 👍
I picked one of these up on September 13th, and as of today (11/3) it has a bad LED. It's showing red instead of the scene color 😢
Guess we'll see how their warranty process is.
As a follow-up, I sent Govee support a message on Nov. 3rd, and I have a new one in hand today, Nov. 10th.
I just got the Govee curtain. They are almost TOO bright. I have them set to 1% and it lights up my whole living room. I hope they allow them to be dimmer…
they'd look even better when against a flat wall and not folded curtain material!

I have both, just bought the govee, but tbh, the build in animations on the twinkly are way better. govee has a lot, but only a few which I actually want to use. Im going with twinkly and may return the govee

I only have some wifi bulbs and a few wifi plugs worked by echo from my phone hotspot, but l like to keep up with whats new, and mostly for the laughs. Keep going Paul I'm sure it will turn around.

I watched another video and thought the govee's were neat but came up with a reason not to buy them, one of them being, oh the cats will probably play with them, and the other being people on the other video were like, "what about twinkly though?" I'm going to pick up a set of the Govee lights because I know, as a set of curtain lights, they're going to be great fun. But @paulhibbert you're being a bit disingenuous with regards to what the Twinkly lights are capable of and why that makes them seem worse than the Govee ones for THIS application. The fact the Twinkly lights allow you to map each individual bulb across multiple light sets in 3D makes them WAY more impressive. I've got 5 sets that go on the front of the house at Christmas and seeing everything synced together as a single massive light canvas is worth every penny!
Don't get me wrong, I love my Govee lights too, but you're reviewing apples and oranges here.
I honestly don't know what you mean. I saw no such option for a 3D mode, nor did I come across one whilst watching reviews from other people when doing my research?
@@paulhibbert on the Twinkly setup there's an option to scan the lights and map their 3D position. They do this by pulsating in a series of colours, and the app, through your camera, detects the location of each bulb.
This means the lights can be draped over things (like for example a Christmas tree) and the animations still work. There's one for example of a reindeer running around the tree. What's better is that indidvidual lights can then be grouped into sets and the animations still transition across them perfectly.
The very first video on YT if you search for "twinkly lights setup" is their own setup video showing the difference between the 2D and 3D mapping. Sooooo?
You're absolutely bang on about the Govees in relation to their resolutions and setup as a curtain, and yes I agree their app is better. But honestly, try it again because the Twinklys offer something really special in their 3D mapping.
The algorithm is killing all my favorite creators these days.
Ah. The twinkly light curtain (not the Twinkly brand) that I had hung out on my patio died a death when my son rather stupidly installed a dart board on top of them, and I’ve been thinking about options to replace them. These Govee ones look perfect! Well, except for the lack of local mode. Come on, guys, local mode isn’t hard to implement and it stops us being reliant on your continued existence. Just put it in, dammit!

Thanks dude. I thought that might happen. 😕 I'm not sure why but my new editing software handles audio that was only produced on the left channel differently from my old software. In Premiere pro I could switch it to mono and it would work on all devices, in final cut Pro switching it to mono sounds slightly different on a PC or TV, but still audible, but I think because mobile devices are monaural they are losing the audio altogether. I have absolutely no idea why.
I shall get this fixed!
@@paulhibbert Da Vinci Resolve is the answer to all your video problems. Not looked back since I changed from the "also rans". The free version only has some of the more esoteric functions missing from the full version - I tried the free version for a couple of months and then bought the full version. If it's good enough for people like Marques Brownlee and major film/video companies it's good enough for me! I even wnt on to buy the Blackmagic Speed Editor keyoard. Fantastic!

they aren't though. They are only better in a specific scenario he set up. Govee isn't bad but Twinkly you can lay out the string in any manner you wish and map it. Twinkly also connects to 3rd party software.

My mental health has been spoken about on my videos before as you know, and I find that the only way to stay above some of the mudslinging is to make fun of it in return and post it on social media. When someone tells me I'm not funny, or that I'm stupid, it isn't constructive, those people are out to cause me pain and that unfortunately touches a nerve for me.
As someone who was bullied at school I never had the chance to stand up for myself because it would have resulted in more of the same physical violence that I was already receiving from the gang of lads that were chasing me between lessons after I had stood up to them on behalf of a friend. That one act of kindness on my part was rewarded with 2 years of inescapable mental and physical abuse.
As an adult I often feel that I am expected to continue to take abuse from people without retaliating. My wife often tells me I should just delete the comments, or ignore them, but that leaves me alone with that negativity and it has at times caused me to stand in the shower for an hour in the morning because I don't want to go sit in front of my keyboard.
By mocking these people I take that power away, and by posting it to my socials I am no longer alone with that negativity.
I don't always respond, and I don't always post to my social media. I have on occasion even responded in a very genuine way to ask a person what's going on with their life that has caused them to lash out in this way, but no one ever replies. I appreciate some people are commenting because they have their own issues going on, but the vast majority of people are just entitled and don't view me as a person.
I don't cope well with injustice and when someone says something deliberately hurtful to me just because they didn't enjoy the way I presented my information I either respond in kind or I stand in the shower for an extended period of time. I tend to choose the former otherwise there wouldn't be any videos for you guys to watch.
As for how the Govee situation is playing out, I haven't done any work today. I feel very low and can't focus. Neesha and I are trying to get on top of my workload so that I can take a week to celebrate her birthday with her and thanks to this I am now a day behind and loaded with guilt.
Just gotta put on my big boy pants and take each job at a time. Starting right now.

Sadly the forum situation is still ongoing, you may have seen that I've been forced to defend myself on the forum as the whole thing seems to have been deliberately created to get between me and Govee and Govee haven't felt comfortable removing the post, I assume because it would make them look like they had something to hide if they removed it.
Unfortunately there are things in the forum post and in Ivy's response that aren't true and that make me look like a paid puppet, so I've had to get involved in a way that I really didn't want to. I will put an end to it as quickly as possible as I really need to work on the next video.
