I can't forget 2005 U20 world cup and Mikel. I was extremely sure a global star was born for Nigeria. Every time I see these clips I feel a bit disappointed. In my opinion Mikel did not live up to his full potential and I blame Mourinho and Chelsea because of it. I remember his first season at Chelsea when José Mourinho said Mikel was a "one touch" player and so he decided to play him at the defensive midfield position. But looking at these clips you can see how creative Mikel was with bags of skills. See how he held on to the ball and could beat multiple opponents with such ease while creating and giving killer passes to his teammates. Mourinho took all of that away from him, and made him to be a back passer and a very predictable player. The coach that a young player plays for matters a lot. Imagine this version of Mikel starting his career under Pep Guardiola or Jürgen Klopp. Just imagine that.

He was intercepting passes, wining 50/50 balls, & making short and long range passes. That is the quality of a CDM. Offensive midfielders enter the box & try to score in addition to the affomention. I think he's so good that he was able to play offensive for Nigeria. Essien played out of position most times, but was able to revert back whenever necessary. Mikhel never was a player that runs with the ball like Ineista, Gerald, Kaka, Yaya Toure. etc. He was just skillful CDM who could take more touches on the ball than usual. A bit chilled & layback on the ball. A bit like Xavi. Mourinho did well

I can't forget 2005 U20 world cup and Mikel. I was extremely sure a global star was born for Nigeria. He was above Messi in the competition in terms of impact and array of abilities on and off the ball. Messi won the MVP because Argentina won the competition and Mikel was ranked second.

YOU HAVE TO PROVE THAT YOU SHOULD BE PLAYING THERE. I wouldn't ever imagine Oscar or Willian getting benched for Mikel @ CAM. Mikel wasn't working on himself. Football got faster with every single player fit and fast before 18. While Mikel Obi, each game he was getting slower and slower, playing with lesser confidence and losing stamina rapidly. It could be the training drills cos what he lost in attacking prowess, he gained in reaction and game reading for defending.
Still, this is what is wrong with our Nigerian players. I see all of them start out really good with mad potential. One of the best displays of youth football. That was Mikel in 2005. Simply amazing talent. I was mesmerised by the level he played at. It's bewildering that he's not one of the greatest players of his generation. The talent just diminished when he joined Chelsea.
Mikel's 5-star performance outshone Lionel Messi in that particular game. However, the referee had mercy on Messi to have awarded two penalties in favor of the Argentines.
As a Nigerian, I will never forgive FIFA for what they've done on this match. We were robbed.

So many comments about Mikel not fulfilling his potential are far from the truth. While he became a defensive player at Chelsea where he earned more than 300 caps in nine years (how's that not considered success?), he also led Nigeria to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and was their best player. He might have toned down his forward play at club but he mostly played a creative role for Nigeria. Mikel won everything at club and played at two FIFA World Cups as well as the Confederations Cup. He stands up there among the greats and can look back on a successful career when he finally calls it a day.

Every time I see these clips I feel a bit disappointed. In my opinion Mikel did not live up to his full potential and I blame Mourinho and Chelsea because of it. I remember his first season at Chelsea when José Mourinho said Mikel was a "one touch" player and so he decided to play him at the defensive midfield position. But looking at these clips you can see how creative Mikel was with bags of skills. See how he held on to the ball and could beat multiple opponents with such ease while creating and giving killer passes to his teammates. Mourinho took all of that away from him, and made him to be a back passer and a very predictable player. The coach that a young player plays for matters a lot. Imagine this version of Mikel starting his career under Pep Guardiola or Jürgen Klopp. Just imagine that.

He was dribbling and creating which is what I loved about him, but had to go change his style for playing time. I was really sad that happened, but hey... he made the choice for himself. All good.

He had a Saga right before the tournament and many of us were like why all the fuss about this guy. Who is this Nigerian Chelsea and MAnU are fighting over. But during the competition, Mikel was a beast and Messi who definitely is a GOAT won the MVP that year because Argentina won. I believe Man U would have been better for him in hindsight. Mikel could have arguable been the best playmaker in the world if he got the minutes at club level.
Not sure why everyone is blaming Mourinho here. If switching Mikhel to DFM was wrong, am sure the 5 coaches that came after Mourinho would have changed it? And even his national team coach after joining Chelsea? In any case, you can't see Mihkel making runs into the penalty box. He was intercepting passes, wining 50/50 balls, & making short and long range passes. That is the quality of a CDM. Offensive midfielders enter the box & try to score in addition to the affomention. I think he's so good that he was able to play offensive for Nigeria. Essien played out of position most times, but was able to revert back whenever necessary. Mikhel never was a player that runs with the ball like Ineista, Gerald, Kaka, Yaya Toure. etc. He was just skillful CDM who could take more touches on the ball than usual. A bit chilled & layback on the ball. A bit like Xavi. Mourinho did well
