“No you don’t need a seperate tutorial for darker skin” I’ve been waiting for someone to say that a long time
Obviously! I am a black person, and honestly people who do tutorials need to learn that if you do a tutorial on skin shading you should learn all skins tones in 1 tutorial, instead of one mais tutorial for white people, and then second ones for dark skin tones.
This made me jump in joy
The thing with darker skin tone is it's harder to show form with shadow, its better to show form mostly with with reflective light
@@bruhifysson9005 yeah but still
Yea, same principles, but a few key differences. Darker skin reflects, so you gotta focus more on forming highlights than shadows. It also reflects colour alot better, so bounce light will be more noticeable. Also, hues have to be cooler when you're going darker, or else the skin will look green, instead of brown. Following the same principles could work, but it'd look more like light skin with the brightness turned down, instead of actual dark skin.
Edit- I didn't learn any of this, until I actually started painting dark skin. It was a fun experience.
This is the first time a lesson tells me "Hey, dark stuff don't get as intense shadows because they're already pretty dark." Which sounds so logical when mentioned but I was the kind of people that when coloring a black object would go for the blackest black possible to make the shadow even if it looked weird as hell, so thank you for opening mi eyes lol
You have no idea how much I needed this I just started painting so I need to know this stuff 😭
Dude…Same!
This is exactly what I was wanting, I cannot shade faces for the life of me-
The way I shade skin is more like a mix between the two. Usually I pick a color palette for shadows and light up-front. Say, if it's a daylight, colors are more warmer tones, so brown and dark brown for shadows and light beige and even lighter yellow for lights. I like to add shading with layers. 1st layer is cel shading in brown (in this example of palette I gave before) usually 30% opacity (that depends of how reflective the texture is) in multiply. I copy and paste the exact shading on a new layer, changing color to dark brown, changing opacity to 15% on shade mode of the layer and I blur the edges like it was soft shading. 2 more layers like that and shading is done. Similarly, I make lighting. I honestly really like the results. It's a nice mix between soft and cel shading :D
Ooo thats neat! I’ll try that as well! :D
For all you interested, your go to must be:
1. Pick the base colour.
2. For the shadow you go a little bit more saturated and closer to purple. (To the right in the color picker, down in the hue picker)
3. For the lights, you go less saturated and closer to yellow. (To the left in color picker and up in hue picker)
4. You also need a reddish tone in the transition zones in cheeks, ears and fingers.
All in all, from light to shadows, the color picker must go in kind of an inverted C shaped path.
@@Faerytech You're right. I didn't express it correctly. That's where the inverted C shape comes to play. Transition from light to shadow goes more saturated. Shadow itself is less saturated and colder. Of course it depends on the lighting you're working with.
@@Faerytech it’s also important for your shadows to match the ambient light of the scene! shadows are commonly blue because the sky is blue and that is the ambient light around you, but they usually reflect whatever color you’re surrounded by-think, like, the color of the environment ‘fills’ the space that light can’t reach.
"thats just how it is" it genuinely my favourite thing to hear when i'm learning things. the second my math teacher said "thats just how it is" instead of overcomplicating things, it got easy
I tend to use both types of shading. And sometimes I'll lean more towards shell or soft depending on the look I'm trying to go for
I swear your videos are so helpful and easy to understand ty!!!
Holy crap that soft skin shading! Best quick explanation ever!
I need to get myself to use bounce light. I always forget or underuse it.
thank you so much for doing dark skin too! so many things only use lighter skin
So growing up I really loved art and drawing but I had some mean art teachers tell me never to use black ink to ink my drawings because it looked to “harsh” and “not natural” and “cartoony.” Turns out my natural style was just cell shading and not the soft style. I am still salty about it. Let people have their unique style! Especially with the invention of ai art, I think an emphasis on different and unique art styles will be even more important. I’m embracing my natural style of art again and I don’t give af what anyone else thinks about it because I like it and that’s what’s important when creating art. Because if an artist doesn’t even like their own work than what’s the point? Art should be about self expression not just an aesthetic contest imho.
Thank you. Ive been waiting for a simple tuts like this in years..
always ever did cel shading so this rlly helped demistify rendering for me. hoping to step more out of my comfort zone this year. 🙏
Thanks for posting this, more knowledge for me in learning CSP!
This was definitely what I needed to watch to improve on my rendering. Thanks so much!
Gosh, thank you for the tutorial, this is the best one I have seen so far. I hope my art progresses with your help!!!
Thank you so much for this video! I learnt how to make the most lovely shading on my artwork because of you! 🥺❤
This was actually really helpful!! i was having trouble with this exact thing as this video popped up too!
Right when I needed this! Tysmm
0:30 wait people really say that? One of the first characters I ever made, I gave him skin that was darker than my own (I'm white but have slightly tanned skin because of sun exposure).
That sentence surprised me a bit but I guess people are used to grabbing a "skin colored" pencil and just going at it, and most digital artists start out with traditional tools. Even in traditional art, there's a nuance to it and personally I prefer to use two or three distinct colors in a similar hue for skin. I had to do that with my own skin because growing up, the pencil that was similar to "standard" white skin wasn't as yellow or tan as my natural skin tone (instead of like, the light peachy pinkish cream, which matches my sister's skin more). Digital art luckily doesn't have that disadvantage but honestly I would also point out that even in similar skin color groups, there is quite a bit of variation and I also like to shade skin in a redder or orange color (unless it's extreme light) to hint at undertones which helps distinguish characters for me. Also the way you shade or highlight things like (natural) lips and nails in some styles, if you're going more realistic, can drastically change the undertone of the skin, such as the choice to make it more pink or more tan.
I love your tutorials!!
thanks a lot!
0:35 the way she said 'skin' in the deepest voice ever (not me opening the comments and searching this specific comment from someone else lol)
DANG this is so useful and your style is so beautiful
Just found out you video & i really like the way you guys video are ! You sound upbeat, you go straight to the point instead of talking round around that make it boring, and you also write the point of what you about to teach ! Thank you
Thank you so much for the tutorial ill be using both rendering for an artwork
This was boiled down to nothing and that's honestly so helpful. 👍🏻
Would love to see a How to Render Fur both soft and cel shaded!
Amazing tips! Tysm! :D
Im glad i came across this channel. I learned cell-shading. Subscibed right away. 😊
I use cool colors for white skin and warm colors for black skin, I think it works good
Holy crap what a great and efficient tutorial.
I've always seen the ✨flesh orbs✨ everywhere, but I didn't exactly understand them. I now totally do thanks to breaking down the WHY for me!
Glad it was helpful! Here, have some more flesh orbs in our newest video: ua-cam.com/video/2nmW4mroGwU/v-deo.html
You said that this technique can work with just about every skin tone. Could it work for something a bit more fantasy? Like, purple, grey and such? Also, how would you blush those types of skin?
In regards to the red edge on the shadows, the hue of it would be a more warmer version of the skin shade (i.e. for grey it would be a darker and slightly pinkish grey).
For blush, it would be kinda a mix of the skin color and the color of blood. How much of one color is mixed w the other to make that color depends on how saturated and dark both the blood and skin are. The less saturated and more light the skin is, the more the blood's color will show(If the blood color is more saturated and less lighter than the skin color.) If it helps, you could do the skin using a human skintone that is identical/nearly identical when set to grayscale to the fantasy skin color and shift the hue to the fantasy skin color after shading.
@@calluminum thank you for the tip, I'll have to try that next time! I have a drow half vampire character who's skin is more of a muted dark lavender skin tone. And, any time I draw blush using red on him, it looks so weird and out of place. So, I appreciate the tip!
i would like to know this too
If you want them to look human.
tysm!
Sweet, just in time
Thanks for popping up on my tic toc I can finally do some reliable art studies now❤❤❤
Really good tutorial 👍🏿
oomg im doing it
OOOO excited video
Perfect 👍🏾 ❤
finally a cel shading tutorial
I didn’t know that I could learn so much in 6 minutes
Front facing Jessie will be haunting my dreams, thank you
Dam, these talented people making this stuff look easy
Which it is when you get the hang of it
But I’ve never gotten this close to this level :0 👏💙 massive applause-
Thank you!!! Ive been having problems with flat looking skin even tho i shade it 😢
hi where do you find the brush you used for the shot shading to get that texture? and ty for this video, super helpful!
Omg yes
Can "The Flesh Orb" be merch?
Do you have a video on how to blend colors? I'm really new to this
How to draw shoes? Every time I draw shoes, it look weird and it don’t feel like it is touching the ground.
Anyone know what brushes/andy brush packs on CSP that are good for skin?
I've been working on my first soft shading piece almost ever and have gotten a bit stuck after getting very far into it. It hurt so bad to be hit with 2:17.
I've just been binging all your guy's videos, and I was just wondering if you have any videos about clothing design?
mmmmm flesh spheres, my favorite thing to paint
I definitely prefer the look of soft shading, but that would take so long to do on animation- so hello cell shading for me!
Soft shading animation sounds like a living nightmare.
@@lambent2kiyo Right?? Just normally shading animations takes SO LONG- I can't imagine soft shading em!
I luckily found an After Effects that automatically cell-shades things for you a few days ago! :D
What brushes are those?
what’s happening 😍 omg shading real
Im a newbie to Krita so im wondering how you got your brushes to show their texture (Idk what its called instead of the images of the brush/pen?
Just one question, does the soft shaded skin still look good if you don’t have a custom brush?
You should make a speedpaint
are those paint brushes available on clip studio? 👀
Is this all on the same layer and does this work on procreate
I do cel shading but didn't know the term until recently 😅 I've always wanted to do soft shading, but it never looks right bc I suck at it lol. Also, cel shading is just simpler
This video made me realize that i desperately need more textured brushes. 😢
I am dumb, which brush did you use for the red edge? 😅
I didnt really understand the cel shading part can someone explainit? Im really interested
Bruh it's just a 5 min video and it's more understandable more than the lengthy ones, I guess I have an attention span of a gold fish 🤣🤣
THANK YOU SO MUCH- I KEEP FINDING TUTORIAL AFTER TUTORIAL FOR SOFT RENDERING, BUT I USE CEL IN ALL MY ART- THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH AHSGSGSHKFHFJDHCBCJ
This Actually Helped so Much
You're so funny and entertaining
can you pls link the brushes you used? this is kind of hard to follow along if you dont have the brushes, not all brushes have the same effect as yours
Unfortunately, some of the brushes are created by the artists while others are paid brushes. You can join our Discord where our Instructors talk more about their brushes and art tools in their meet the Team profile! discord.gg/wingedcanvas
i use like a mix of cell and soft?? its weird
but for my cell shading i never use multiply, i always use color burn
i need my neons what can i say
"For a realistic look." *Image of absolutely terrifyingly proportioned MLK*
DUDE YOUR VIDEOS ARE SO HELPFUL OMG WHAT 😭 TYSMMMM 🤍🤍
Question, I want to make a webcomic and I want to do cell sharing for characters but soft shading for the majority of background. Would that work?
That could work! Mixing stuff in your work is always fun :)
What about fur, scales, and stuff like that?
Key: While you play around more with shadows for lighter skin, you play around more with light for darker skin.
Could you explain a little bit more about what subsurface scattering is?
subsurface scattering is basically like blushing, from how i understand it!
From what i understand its used to add a bit of spice to the shadows. The mentioned places absorb more light i think. You can check it better by standing in a dark room, turning on a flashlight and pressing it onto different parts of the body, like your hands, ears or face (not into ur eyes pls). Remeber to have a mirror close.
I am no expert, so do research it a bit by yourself.
I believe it’s where, since skin is very slightly transparent light goes in and then is reflected out
PLZ WHAT BRUSHES DO YOU USE I'M BEGGING
SAME I NEED SIMILAR BRUSHES FOR PROCREATE
@someflyingtortilla they cost money because gatekeeping
I absolutely loved this tut it’s so perfect but I’m still stuck on the fact she says textured brush like I have on but it doesn’t smudge like this unless it is a smudge brush but still when applying the technique to actual characters it just smudges all over the place and looks bad yk, someone help 😭
Asking for a separate tutorial for dark skin is like asking a separate tutorial for blue skin like avatar
is cel-soft a thing? Or is it either cel or soft?
0:32 I’m dying 😂😂😂
I do a great lineart and then remder everything and now looks like 2 persons did it
Yeah i prefer cel shadings more
i like cel more but i end up doing soft :'D
✨FLeSh ORb✨
Oh
ah yes the flesh orb
I know how to paint balls now, what do i do now?
Do you use Krita
🤤mmm perfectly round chocolate ball...
I just am having trouble making skin color with colored pencils
We have a coloured pencil skin tutorial in the works! Stay tuned 😉
