Βeing a teacher myself,I find your methods really helpful! For us in the Mediterranean countries, good pronunciation is quite a hard task! The thing is, we 've got clearer syllabus, vowels and consonants, one after another -and that's a different story😅...-I really enjoy your videos, you are a very sweet young woman ,keep going, you are doing a great job 👍

    Katharine,
    1. You're totally right when you say that Worcestershire is one of the scariest word 😆 in the English language.
    2. Your method of "breaking up" the words in bits and pieces is one of the most useful and helpful methods I have come across since I have been studying English. For instance the trick you have used to explain the pronunciation of the word "queue" is simply brilliant.
Where have you been all my life?
    3. Oh well, you seem to have forgotten a word as scary as Worcestershire: "colonel". It'll have to be included in video Part 2, I suppose.

Wuster - Sh I ur , Northampton Sh I ur, Gloster Sh I ur (is how it was drummed into me in elocution lessons) In a place near us as a boy was place marked on the ordinance survey maps and road signs as Irthlingburough but it was called Artleburar and Rothwell simply Ro-'al. But your pronuciation is quite clear but with a is it London area accent? Anyway the Kings English in J.Chaucer's time was east midland. I tried it out with using the local rather strong accent of Kettering and it worked a treat. But then i'm an Octogenarian 😊😊

For me, from Brazil, of Portuguese language, the most hard word to pronounce is the 1rst one, RURAL. The letter R sound in Brazilian Portuguese it's the same sound of the H letter in the word HOTEL when it's writting in the start of word, from the 2nd silable on it sounds like in English.

The word choir is funny, Long time, I couldn't understand, why I couldn't see letters that make sense. But you are right, I don't have to look at the spelling. The queue was known to me for the billiard sports. But is also a snake in front of a store(in German).
You are a good teacher with a wonderful smile.

Choir, Wire, Fire, Hire, Tire, Buyer, Liar, Pyre,... all end in schwa (uh). And the word Choir and Quire have identical pronunciation. In billiards, the name of the long stick used to move the ball is written "cue", but pronounced exactly the same as "queue". In London there is a famous garden called Kew Gardens. "Kew" is pronounced exactly the same as "cue" and "queue". Isn't English a strange language ? 😊

You can translate it into your own language!
Below is my writing in their UA-cam comments column:

      I'm Indonesian
      Okay!👌😉😊😆😃👏👍🙏
      Thanks!👌😉😊😆👏👏👏👍🙏
      Nice to meet you here!😉😊
      Have a nice day!👌😉😊😃👏👍🙏
I also know that in your opinion English is very important.
However, in my opinion, Indonesian is far more important!
      Do you know?
Indonesian is an international world language!
      Ok!👌😉😊😆😂😃👏👏👏👍🙏
Don't you want to enjoy a cup of warm coffee while talking with me on this very high peak?
And do you know how high this peak I am at?
And while you yourself can not speak Indonesian.
      Do you know?
Indonesian is an international world language!
And I also don't want to blame you because you can't speak Indonesian.
And if you come to visit Indonesia, then, you don't meet me. That's the same as you haven't come to visit Indonesia!
Please share with all your friends or family!
Because of how much I mean to you and everyone!
And think about it when regret is no longer meaningful!
Hopefully one day you will know what and who I really am.
      Oh ya, by the way!
You see, Mr. Obama, former president of the United States, lived in Indonesia.
But it's a pity that Mr. Obama never met me! And that is a big loss.
      O heavenly angels!
I want to always see you smile!
      And please you smile!
May your heart always shine like your face!
      Okay!👌😉😊😃👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🙏

Rural feels like I'm pronouncing three Rs in a row. Replacing the middle one with a schwa makes it much easier!
This video is your first I've watched. (I hope that makes sense.) You may have already had this word in another video, but: Twelfths. The spelling is easy, even with each sound, but when I try to pronounce it all together, it seems the word gods forgot it would need to be pronounced.
Your method is the easiest I've seen, though I've watched lots of other channels about pronouncing English!

Fluency doesn't mean our pronunciations are impeccable; it just means clarity of speech at ease,. I supposed . That's exactly what you have emphasized on.

Exceptionally useful video! Thank you so much, Katharine🙏. I would like to know your opinion on a habit of mine: when I speak to an Anglo-Saxon, I tend to scrutinise their mouth, tongue, teeth and, as far as possible, throat movements. It's a fixation, which also makes me a bit rude because I don't look my interlocutors in the eye, but I consider pronunciation technique very important and, I believe, by observing their mouth movements while speaking, I could further improve my pronunciation. Long story short to also let you know that I notice, when pronouncing a word where the 'L' has to be pronounced (e.g. 'love'), you usually bring the tip of your tongue to the right side of your mouth (the left one for those following the video), between your teeth. For the record, eh? Btw, some of the terms you analyse in the video are just horrible and difficult to pronounce (= choir), others I took for granted, after your remarks, I realise how little I knew of the English language. Fortunately, your videos help me to at least improve my pronunciation. And of course I have to study, repeat and repeat, also in writing (I follow the study method of the Shenker institute).

Lovely accent you have! I always liked everything British so much and try to improve my spoken British further, so I’m happy to have found the channel.
So actually apart from maybe Wocestershire, I didn’t find any of these words very hard to pronounce. Even if I maybe don’t always get it precisely right, I knew how they should sound.
In fact, my most hated word to pronounce is actually: PURCHASING!!!
I’m working as a buyer and everytime I have to use that word I say it with a German emphasis on the second syllable instead of the first one!!
I have to force myself to say „purr-che-sing“ instead of the rather German sounding „per-chaesing“😂😂😂
I pronounced it wrong when talking to a Texan and he didn’t understand at all what I meant. I hate that word 😂

"Lieutenant" is a good one: It's actually a French word, used in English but pronounced LEFFtenant in English. - 3 syllables; stress the "ten" and with the "a" as schwa. Leff - - uhnt. 😃

'rural' is arguably the most difficult one out there of the standards; esp for me who have dispatched my old stammer down the drain - I thought, not really for this one, which I avoid at all costs 😁

Is this pronunciation puzzle issue only with English? Most of the languages of the world, I believe, are pronounced the way it's written. Arabic, Hebrew, Swedish, German, Hindi etc, the languages I know. Please let me know your thoughts and opinions

As far as I am concerned, these words except ‘rural’ and ‘squirrel’ are not really difficult to pronounce. The spellings of the words are just confusing when it comes to pronunciation. The difficult words to pronounce for me include: Marilyn, Maryland, clothes, months, width.
