Humorously, back when this was published and Sir Terry wasn’t as well-known many female fans were convinced the author HAD to be a woman because there was no way a man could write women this well, right?
I will never stop gushing over how much I love Sir Terry Pratchett and his Discworld series. Sometimes his observations and turns of phrase were the only things that were helping me keep my sanity because he more often than not was able to make an observation that wasn’t so obvious. One of my favorites, especially being a woman in a skilled trade, was in Feet of Clay with Angua talking to the lady Dwarf Cheery Littlebottom when Angua says “but lots of women in the city would love to do things the Dwarf way; you can do anything the men do.” To which Cheery replies “Provided we *only* do what the men do.”
She also defends Cheery's pronouns from her boyfriend- telling him he had his head stuck up his bum and reminding him "This is Ankh Morpork, we have extra pronouns here." and "If you can't be yourself in Ankh Morpork where can you be?"
I kinda agree that Granny does have “some” terf’y characteristics in this book. Two things tho…….Granny grew……her opinions and attitudes (the character)matured, ‘and’ let’s be honest, rules are rules and expectation are expectations, but they don’t apply to Granny, in her mind……and gods help ANYone trying to tell Granny she can’t do precisely what she wants to do, male female, god or demon. Personally I’d say that in ER she talked a great deal about a “woman’s place” whilst totally ignoring any such restrictions and towing Esk along in her wake. In later books Terry felt able to make his witches much less concerned with being “proper” and just made them witches( you’ll understand once you read say, Lords and Ladies, or Witches Abroad) “what’s there to be afraid of?” Granny Weatherwax:”us”
Granny and Nanny Ogg are some of my favourite characters, but DEATH is still my ultimate fave and you’ll encounter him in Mort. Enjoy.
The Discworld series is a very real journey, with the full life of Terry Pratchett within it. I find the awkward beginning and end of the series exceptionally moving as they reflect the artistic growth and health decline of this brilliant author.
Enjoy the ride - and enjoy each revisit to these books as they call back often for a fresh read.

I’m so glad you enjoyed Equal Rites. My heart sank a little when you said Granny Weatherwax had TERFy vibes, as she’s my favourite Discworld character (and possibly my favourite fictional character overall; I have a tattoo of one of her quotes, if that gives you an indication). But I know what you mean. IIRC this book shows her learning about something she had assumed, and adapting to that new information. In later books, she’s a more rounded out character, but I think even ER Granny is a better person by the end of the book than at the beginning.
The next book is Mort, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Pratchett’s writing keeps climbing the mountain of excellence.
Granny Weatherwax is also my favorite. My intro to her was Wyrd Sisters and she is more rounded as a character in that one. Equal Rites I only listened to recently and the difference in her character from that book to the later books is a little jarring.
I think she may have been his commentary on older people and we don't expect them to learn or change because they are set in their ways. She always starts in the old way of thinking and then learns and changes.
Granny Hype! She's a character who will only get more depth as we go! Pratchett's social commentary becomes more naturally engrained in his stories as they go on to the point where it feels less like an author with a point to get across, to someone who is trying to hold a mirror up to the way our society works today but explored using the fantasy tropes for fodder. It's very much a science fiction/douglas adams approach to Fantasy. Thanks for the review! And for the tip about the audio books, time to buy EVEN MORE AUDIO BOOKS!!
Oh yeah, he's not very subtle about it and is usually right.
I recently read this novel and thoroughly enjoyed it. I agree that the ending felt a bit abrupt, but Granny Weatherwax is a great character because she's forced to challenge her biases by new information. The wizard staff is almost a character on of itself, and despite her resistance, insists that Esk will claim it as a Wizard's staff.
What I love most about Terry Pratchett is how his approach to comedy writing is opposite to my own. Whereas I love to take mundane situations and make them silly, he takes ridiculous situations and gives them a very mundane response. Like, if Gargoyles are sentient, why on earth would they stay out in the rain instead of taking shelter?
The next book in the series is Mort, which I haven't read, but so far my favourites in the Discworld series are The Last Hero and Sourcery.
Let me assure you Mort will not disappoint. Enjoy. 👍🎉

To clarify, this book started me going, Oho. Oho. This series of books might go somewhere, and then I jumped ahead to Maurice and the improvement was... lightyears ahead! So that is why I stuck around. Esk will be appearing later in I Shall Wear Midnight...

Here's the thing. The Discworld changes. With each passing book, the world morphs a bit. Granny isn't a static character. She pretends to stay the same, but really, she's one of the few people who KNOWS what the worlds all about and is in our corner fighting for people. I'LL agree that when she starts off, she's a hard pill to swallow and she's NOT quite there yet as the character that people love. She's on her way, but she's not QUITE done.
.... But you haven't met the coven yet.... And oh my lordy lord, I'm not spoiling anything for you, but THAT'S when Granny starts getting fleshed out. Can't wait for you to finally get to Monsterous Regiment because THAT'S gonna be fun.
Next up is Mort and Mort is one of my favourite books of all time. Oh I'm super jealous that this'll be your first time through!!

Guards, Guards is a bit away. Looking it up, it's Book 8 (I still haven't gotten to it.) Next is Mort, which is one *I'm* looking forward to.
And neither of them have the new audiobook versions out. They seem to have only released the Witches series, which are read by the same female actor.
Also, you did already hear Bill Nighy as Death in this.
Always a pleasure to see another video as you go on your Discworld journey! Honestly, this is kinda inspiring me to go back and start from the very beginning again: eyes refreshed from over 20 years of having last read them and all!
The witches are my favourite characters in the Discworld series, so when you said Granny Westherwax is a TERF I audibly gasped in shock. You're probably right, though.
Terry Pratchett was such a brilliant author. It's actually making me tear up (not for the first time!) to think about what we lost when he died.

I love listening to all kinds of people discovering Pratchett for their first time :) His books are near and dear to me. Glad you're enjoying it so far. I never quite grew warm with the witches books, but with the new audiobooks I might have to give them a retry. Lovely voice, it seems from the preview.
I think some of Granny's characterization in _Equal Rites_ is part of the Early Installment Weirdness, as Pratchett is starting to morph the series from one that's primarily a satire of established fantasy franchises and tropes to a more independent franchise that he can use to comment on absolutely everything from nerdy references in history and cultures to Shakespearean ruminations on the human condition. By the time she reappears, Sir Pterry has a much better sense of what he wants to do with her.
As for which is my favorite, I'm gonna have to go with _Small Gods._

Your voice is getting clearer, it sounds like recovery's going well! I didn't really like earlier Pratchett's books, so I can't say anything about this one
I will, with great sadness, admit that the TERF-energy is strong in Granny Weatherwax, at least in this very early version of her. Hell, German TERF-twitter has a particular obnoxious specimen who uses the German version of her name* as her handle, even! HOWEVER Sir Terry himself absolutely said trans rights both during his life and in his books, through both plots and characters. Your journey through Discworld will have you encounter them soon, and I'm looking forward to hear your take on them!
* = fictional characters in media sometimes get translated/adapted versions of their names in translated versions of that piece of media: Falcor from the Neverending Story is Fuchur in the original German, if you try and pronounce that in English and remember that this is a children'sbook...yeah, I see why they'd re-name him! Captain Picard's lover Vash is re-named as Viriad in the French dub of TNG, since "Vash" sounds to close to the French word "vache", which means "cow" (Now there's an aspect that would have gotten "Sex in Star Trek Part 2 - TNG" demonitized faster than you can go "Mooo!"... ). Why the Dutch needed to re-name Neville Longbottom as Marcel Lubbermans, however, I have no idea...
I'd agree with the TERF-Energy being strong in her. She has mostly a bad impression of men and doesn't think highly of them, them being way more trouble than their worth. Her gut reaction to having a man "encroach" into womandom would be a strong HELL NO. And her gut reactions have a way of making everyone in the kingdom have a bad week.
This being said, I don't recall her having much experience with these topics. So it is a huge part ignorance and never thinking much about the topic. And she's not a bad person. Though she is very, to a fault, set in her ways, she is capable of slightly adjusting her mind (not changing her mind, she'd be too proud for that). Meeting the Monstrous Regiment or something akin, would soften her up.

And Id like to think shed find a way of coming round to it. Or maybe just take it for granted. And hopefully shed be the same with Trans men. She respects that young preist.... whats his name from Carpe Jagulum, one hell of a lot by the end of the book.
Youre not wrong though. She does have terf energy early on.
I see what you mean and you are not wrong but .... none of Pratchett's heroes are perfect. Their stories are more about self discovery and improvement, not about being perfect. Vimes for example is speciest and has serious problems with the undead early on in the books.
It is also why Rincewind is often considered the worst of the lot, he has no awareness of his flaws and does not improve.
Granny on the other hand has a very good understanding about herself and knows what bits she does not like, anymore. Old Granny would have handled things differently, better.
I’m so glad you are continuing on into Discworld. Though there are so many books to shout out; I’m pleased you emphasize the style & voice of the author as being the shining thread through the chaotic romp.

Quite a ways until you start hitting my own favorite characters at 30 and 33, but Guards! Guards! and to a lesser extent Wyrd Sisters is where we start seeing the emergence of the more modern form of Discworld, though it's definitely a process.
I am absolutely thrilled to see you're doing Discworld again! I'm hoping you enjoy some of the upcoming characters as much as I do, and I can't wait to hear your perspective on the stories I love.

I read this as a teen a and was delighted by it (and was largely unfamiliar with a lot of the lore Sir Pratchett was parodying and exploring or subverting) and I was already determined to read more but this one made me seek out the series more, espc anything involving the witches - I really wanted to follow Esk's growth and development...
I was also tickled to learn he'd won an award for this book... which he graciously returned, not being the female writer they thought he was. Can't find a citation of this anymore... but I'd believe it.

This one is better than the first two, but it is still like nothing compared to what is to come. And you'll find that there will be some scifi coming up. It is not for nothing that there four entire books dedicated to "the science of Discworld". 😀

Also, the comparison of (early) Granny Weatherwax to a TERF had me laughing out loud. Definitely spot on. I look forward to your thoughts as you encounter her later in the series and begin to see her grow a bit (albeit in a very Granny Weatherwax type of way, haha).

It's worth remembering that Pratchett considered Equal Rites to be the "Start" of the series, and it's a book wherein a woman becomes a wizard and so on. Hope you enjoy Death, he's one of my favorites.

Granny is one of my favorites.
Much later, there's a scene in which she goes alone to confront a group of monsters, and a good man that doesn't know her all too well tries to rally her neighbours to help: "Will you let her face them alone?"
To which the confused farmers ask him in return:"why should we care for these monsters?"
Talk about reputation.
For the record, my favorite (I think I mantioned it already) is Pyramids, a standalone book about a young gentleman that recently graduated from the Assassin's guild, only to take on the family business.

I think Equal Rites is an awesome book, I've never read Guards, Guards, so I'm interested to watch your review of it. However, I LOVE Mort, which is another early one you'll get to soon, it's my absolute favourite of all the Discworld Books, so I can't wait for your review on that, too!
GG is one of my favourites. Vimes is fantastically written, very bitter and pointed.
The next is Mort, where you finally get to meet DEATH in all his glory. You will not be disappointed. Keep up the good work and I hope the swelling is not too uncomfortable.

Discworld is fantastic
Oh my god I hadn't seen your other discworld reviews! I also read them all in publication order. Took me about two years as I did it at a relatively leisurely pace. They just get better and better as they go on. I can't wait until you get to Monstrous Regiment, or as I like to call it Gender Exploration: The Novel.
World-building in Discworld is so much better than another book series that must-not-be-named!
I think you’ll love character arc of Cheery/Cherry Littlebottom and the themes explored in Monstrous Regiment.
the first two books were difficult to finish, and i never really connected with rincewind as a lead the first time. But after that, it started to soar and never let up.
I just finished reading this book and while I thoroughly enjoyed it I do have to agree about the ending. It reminded me a bit of Star Trek Discovery season 3 where they end the main plot and then hand wave Starfleet and the Federation getting back together and I kept thinking it would have been nice to see that actually happen you know. Kind of an abrupt ending with a ´they all lived happily ever after’ kinda vibe.
Overall though it was a wonderful read. There were some turns of phrase that really caught me and made me laugh out loud. It’s always a great experience when you have to go back and re read a line because it’s just that good.
The books get better and better, the first 2 books I think of as an introduction to the discworld, once people are used to the world he's created he's free to concentrate on the characters and doesn't have to keep reminding people of the world the story is taking place in.
Mort is indeed next up, which is also a really good one and a much recomended start point for the series so thats possibly why you've them mixed up. You stil have a few to go including Sourcery which is probably the weakest, not terrible by any means, completely skippable but if you want to see the series evolve it's a good one because its the last point at which DIscworld is about satirising generic high fantasy tropes, after this its very much about satirising the real world.
Personal favourites, Lords and Ladies (best Witches book imo), Jingo, The Hogfather (try and arrange your read schedule so you're reading and reviewing it around Christmas) and especially Small Gods - the ideological one where he goes blood hard on the secular humanist stuff without tipping into full "New Atheist" nonsense. Its a stand alone so its one I always reccomend to people who may not even be interested in the full series. I love the Tiffany Aching books too, a lot of direct and not too subtle commentary on Harry Potter, hard to rank them against the rest of the series as they're YA, which I personally don't think makes them better or worse just different in their aims and what you get out of them.
This is my favorite Discworld novel, mainly because it was one of the first ones I read, but it still holds up, so...

PLEASE read the rest of T Pratchett’s witches books (Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade, Carpe Jugulum) the characterisation/writing of Granny Weatherwax develops and improves hugely between Equal Rites and Wyrd Sisters/the later books. The other witches that get introduced are also fucking amazing. I’d be very surprised if you don’t love them and I would love to get your reviews of those too!
Granny... hits real hard in the last book of the series. My favourite book from Discworld I think is Small Gods. It plays with the idea of faith which as an agnostic/atheist always interests me on an analytical level. And it's fun because ya know... in fantasy, they can be real. lol
This and Wyrd Sisters were the only two read by Celia Imrie so I doubt anyone is feeling any nostalgia for those readings but I do think Planer and Briggs did a a superior job compared to the others that have been released so far. I just wish I had the choice on what narration I could purchase. Looks like I'll have to revert to other means of getting the Planer/Briggs versions I wasn't able to purchase in time.
Sir Terry said this was the Discworld novel where he discovered the Joy of Plot. Before this he was just messing around with satire and tropes.

On the classic audiobooks - one of the major criticisms I have of the back catalogue is not the quality of the reading, but the quality of the transcoding. It is painfully obvious that many (if not all) of the older ones were digitised from very poor quality tape, with no effort to clean up or restore the recordings. And then they used the wrong sampling rate. This means that pirate copies are often *better quality* than the commercially available copies. I may go as far as to suspect that the commercially available copies *are* the pirate copies after being redigitised multiple times (there are lots of audio artifacts that are classic signs of this).
So while the originals are wonderful... you won't be able to obtain them legally.
As a side note, if you want to treat yourself - there are abridged recordings read by Tony Robinson. They run to about 3hrs each book and are a true delight.
The colour of magic and light fantastic make more sense in the context of his other works outside of Discworld. He wanted to be a sci-fi writer, but he didn't understand the 'sci' bit. And he wanted to write satire, but didn't find a story to pin it to in the Colour of Magic and Light Fantastic.
In Equal Rites he reigns it in and focuses on just one thing to satirise, and this time it is the ridiculousness of not having gender equality.
One thing to note - Pratchett didn't hold hard and fast to lore at all, so expect things to be retcon'ed liberally, especially things from earlier in the series. He took a pragmatic approach, so if you try to understand the books as less of a series, and more as repeated iterations of trying to tell the same story better it may make more sense. Also it makes more sense if you don't read them all back-to-back! e.g. he recycles gags often, but you might not notice if you read them over 30 years rather than 3.

Granny Weatherwax is a great character because she isn't perfect.
Something that I find very telling about Pratchett's attitude towards her is that he, *a writer*, made a character that distrust books.
She's a virgin, she dislike actors, she is a bigot and can act very closed-minded.
If you happen to read Monstrous Regiment, where Pratchett deals with transness, I would be super interested in hearing what you think.

Ive found that with a lot of TP books the first half promises more than he can resolve or the resolution feels a little flat in comparison to the beginning. But I keep coming back to it because the comedy and social comentary is so fun. (Even when I dont allways agree with it)
For example - the resolution to the mail pileup problem in Going Postal is a bit... eh.
That's the problem with us reading literature non chronically..we end up feeling the original is repetitive because we have read the repetition allready ..;)

Oh Pratchett only gets better with the reading and re-reading. His characters are all flawwed in human ways. And this early Weatherwax comes without a Nanny Ogg to ballance out her sharper edges.
I’ve read so much Pratchett… almost all of the discworld books…
This one was a miss for me. The conclusion, knowing we don’t see Esk again for ages- and the unseen university never has another female wizard… is just heart breaking.
Every other witches book all fight for my favourite Terry Pratchett book.
Especially Maskerade.
I watied for hours to meet him in the 90's. I have to say go old school on the audio books Nigel planner used the same voice for rincwind as Neal the hippie from the young ones.( 80s UK sitcom that I don't dare to rewatch)
Mort is my favourite Terry pratchett book and the colour of magic and the light fantastic are also great a great read but Douglas Adams will always be my number one author so glad you like these books they are all great enjoy "42"
If you read Terry Pratchett and you still apply labels instead of understanding that no-one is ever just one thing, you fail to understand the Discworld.
All characters, even Fred Colon gets his rock hard certainties challenged and evolves whilst never becoming anything other than Fred Colon. (Doctorate of what that bloke said down the pub after graduating from the School of Hard Knocks.)
There is much to hate about humanity, but so much to love, labels, especially glibly pejorative labels stop us from seeing that and realising that it often is the case within one heart and one mind.
I'd rather be Fred Colon who evolves than Dee who breaks because of their inability to do so.

Sadly, I feel this is one of the weaker entries into Discworld. It also feels somewhat dissonant because the later books establish that no sane person would want to work at Unseen University and being a wizard is utterly useless as a profession. Much like working in real academia (has Masters).
Granted in THAT era of the Discworld the UU are full of power mad nut jobs and are WAY more antagonistic. Homicidally mad nut jobs who are seeking more power. Glad they changed it to the more familiar useless mob for the later books.
