There's no doubt she's a great cook, but she also seems to have some skeletons in her closet. There's a rumor in Istria which sounds very much like the truth about Lidia's origin. It very much seems like she wants to appear more of an Italian than her and her family actually are. The truth is that Istrian people are a mix of both Italians and Croats and they kind of consider themselves to be an ethnic group of their own within Croatia. Her maiden (father's) surname was forcefully changed from Croatian Motika to Italian version like it was done to all of Istrian Croats while under Italy's reign. Her mother's name is Italian , but her maiden surname is , again, Croatian. She claims her family were harassed by the communist regime because they were Italian, yet they didn't escape right after the war like other real ethnic Italian folks did, but more than 10 years later. It is suspected that they simply wanted to move to America just like 1000s of Croats went and immigrated due to poverty at the same time. So perhaps they did go to Italy first to be able to move to the US , but half her story sounds like BS. BTW yes, children were baptized in Yugoslavia. Even if it happened that you couldn't do it at a certain town or county due to some over-zealous communist local officials( I won't deny there were people like these), you could easily do it at another town. Even her husband's surname is not Italian. Her selling point is that she is Italian through and through and of course playing a victim is always good marketing. Many people In Istria resent her for this.
Almost everything is true but Istrians are mostly Croats, not some kind of mix like they would like us to think, fascist Italy italianized our native Croatian people like Lidia. Croats were the ones that suffered not Italians! She's one of the best examples what happens when they destroy your true identity, the worst! But what's really horrible is that she KNOWS that her ancestry is Croatian and she STILL chooses to lie to herself and everyone else! Either she's completly delusional or she's doing it on purpose.
Of course she is doing it on purpose, she sells better as an Italian then a Croat! Italian cuisine is perhaps the top cuisine in the world. I wish she would at least promote Istria as a province if not Croatia. I do agree with you, I don't know where you live , but I live in Istria and have come to know these nuances in people - there are mixed and 'pure' Italians in Istria. Even Croats here call themselves 'Istrian' as if they are a separate country. Half the people in west Istria speak Italian as their main language and many consider themselves Italian. So this influence can't be denied, and it wasn't all forced on people, a lot of it is simply die to geographical position of Istria.
This fits with what a family member of mine, who knows her family, told me. Also on the show, Finding Your Roots, her DNA showed she was 63% Eastern European and 28% Italy & Greece. It's really a great episode, and I found what she said when she learned of her DNA results, very interesting.
I love watching her shows and her recipes. But why is it, when people reach celebrity status, they become crooks? Lydia, her son, and Mario Battaglia withheld tip money from their wait staff? Really? stealing from their lowest paid employees. Glad they were sued.
Yeah. Now they have a new scam. They don't pay the hardest working part of the kitchen staff. Dishwashers, food runners, bus help. A decent will earned pay. Now the new game is combing tips. Blow me. When I pay three times what a bottle of wine is worth. It better be served in a clean glass. And when I go to use my fork and knife. It better be spotless. And when I go to wash my hands and check myself in the mirror. I should be able to cry on the floor if need be. Pay your staff well and you will have the most loyal group of people behind you. Not suing you. Oh yeah and keep your hands off of them as well. Just saying
