Thanks for sharing Mike. My very first hangun hen I was a very young lad was a CVA 1861 Navy 36 cal. Oddly these CVAs were like .380" diameter bores and I used Lee conical molded projectiles. Brings back memories!

The 'last gun Colt designed'. Right! It seems the 'Pocket Navy' was a repackaged popular '51 Navy' style by the Colt Company after Colts death! The first revealing of this ...Pocket Model of Navy Size Calibre... was 1863.
Some modern authors stated it not out until 1865!

Really nice out there. I like the different seasons in God's country. Many do not realize the beauty of the North East Forrest Woods. Awesome. This is uplifting to watch and I sincerely hope that your hard work motivates viewers to get out to a range and try a Percussion Cap and Ball Revolver!
I am very pleased with the performance of my 140 grain Universal Bullets in 36 caliber, I do have Two Cavity bullet casting molds in it, that are available for those who seek to obtain and cast their own.
As well as a newer 145 grain 380 diameter custom 6 cavity mold.
One thing I would say is that Pietta 1861 Navy is an awesome piece of machinery, there sure have come along way! I would just suggest to all using this and other Colt's as you have done before to Deepening the Rear Hammer Sight with Rotary Tool and or Pyramid/ Triangle Shaped File and have a competent BP Gunsmith such as (Dykes Reber of the Muzzleloading Shop in Little Rock AR) mount a Dovetail Higher Front sight Like the Uberti Remington sight or other on the barrel to shoot as close as point of aim as possible.
I have purchased 2 of those fine 1861 Navy's from Dixie Gun Works, and I did have Uberti Remington front sights dovetailed in on both of them by Master Black Powder Gunsmith Dykes Reber of the muzzleloadershop.com in Berryville Ark.
Thank You Very Much for your deeply thought out hard work. Indeed Combustible Paper Cartridges (CPC) were the most efficient "Best" Practical system around before the metallic cartridge! Please keep up the good work keep em coming!
I'm a fan of your bullet designs. Before I new anything about your bullets, I designed bullets in my head that is almost exactly the same design you use in the bullets Mike shot in this video. The only difference is mine are a little lighter for a given caliber. I'd like to order some moulds one day. I just started moulding so I'm still learning.
I bought molds from Kaido Ojamaa a few days ago, and now awaiting delivery. I appreciate the tvideo of different loads Mike.

I think that pistol is pretty much a one kind of bullet gun. The Kaido bullet is all i would shoot out of it. Thats some very good accuracy. Nice shootin.

Excellent video! Really enjoyed the shooting. Those Kaido bullets really group tight. Looks like they were really smacking the targets much harder than the rest of the projectiles tested. Would like to know how fast they were going,
The Kaido bullet in the 1861 with Triple 7 of Swiss should boost it up to a level suitable for white tail and hogs where it is legal to use a 36 cal percussion revolver. The 44 cal versions have proven devastating on 200lb + hogs on the last several hunting trips that Kaido has joined our hunting party, heck he out killed us all and harvested 2 wild boars and one was a wee bit over 250lbs dropping it with a single shot! The Kaido bullets hit harder than any other projectile made for these percussion revolvers and are very accurate. Great shooting Mike keep those videos coming!
Good advise DO NOT get in a gun fight with this gentleman. Even if he is only armed with a .36 caliber 1861 Navy.

I have a 7.5" barrel on the 1851 Navy, and I really like it. It looks cool and feels good.
Your cast conicals took out the shaving cream cans almost as spectacularly as my pointed nosed makarov rounds.
Nice single hand shooting, Mike ! I don't think people realize how difficult that is with these guns. Love my '61 Uberti but I must say my '62 police is really becoming my favorite of the 36's...
Well Mike, you've done it again -- another great video! If I ever get half that good, I'll call myself "good." Both my BP guns (I only own two, due more to poverty than lack of desire) and both shoot high and to the left. It hadn't occurred to me (duh!) to file the rear sight groove. Can anything be done to move sighting to the right, short of good ol' "Kentucky windage?"

Mike, I've always wondered if it would be possibly to design some sort of "muzzle break" for bp revolvers or even rifles that would focus,redirect, or somehow assist in quickly dissipating the smoke. Rifled smoke outlets? Lol.

Regarding the loading only five for safety, in that you are pretty much immediately firing after loading, wouldn t it be more than reasonably safe to load all six? Loading and leaving for a time where the chance of it getting bumped around, yes. I only load five. Through bad experience I have learned to do this. Anyway, so what do you think? Or is it that you just wish to maintain a firm impression that safety in this manner must be consistant even in , , any situation. I ve noticed in another video you loaded a five shot pocket model with all chambers. Citing convenience. Anyway, seems safety can be preserved with the consideration of particular variables.

Are the Pietta Colt 1861 Navy and 1860 Army more reliable than the Pietta Colt 1851 Navy? As in does the hammer snatch caps off of nipples, or does the loading lever fall off the barrel from recoil any less?
Mike, is it possible to load up paper cartridges using the Kaido’s? I’m thinking being able to prepare them in a controlled environment would make them even more consistent.

Hello Mister Beliveau you equipped your uberti on 1862 police of fireplace SLIX SHOT as on your other models? I possess one of these copies and it is true that the incidents of shooting(firing) are many because of the capsules which fall in the mechanism. Here in France we do not find the product SLIX SHOT and I shall like having your opinion before placing my order in the United States. modelmaker78 I don't think Slix Shot makes the correct size for the 1862 Police revolver. I'd recommend Treso nipples

Pietta quality has improved quite a bit over the years. That said, I mostly buy Uberti made cap & ball guns, but some models are only made by Pietta, and I buy other Piettas for comparison purposes.

Mike an honest question. Why are you using .380 round balls. Most of the pietia I've owned have liked. 375 round ball.

could the reason why the 61 navy has a 8" barrel is because pietta uses the same barrels as the 60 army for the 61 navy ? you know to save money and all.
Yeah. A money saving 'trick'. I m more apt to believe this. Afterall, another Italian replica of a 60 Army 'belly gun' has configuation for the shoulder stock. The Italian replicators don t seem to have any real pride doing these 'money makers'. Afterall, they produce the Walker, a v e r y powerful pistol, of which is already too powerful for its design even with modern materials, with base pin/barrel insert headspace (short arbor). Which d e s t r o y s the pistol in short order.

Where do I get an original conical mold for paper cartridges?
Mike: As a Texan I just had to order a Pietta Dance Bros. .44 from Dixie and it is on the way. Any chance for a review one of these days? I don't think any Texan can stop themselves from buying this replica. I stopped shooting years ago because I have no place to go but am actively looking for a relaxed environment to shoot. The frame is apparently incorrect (I think it was a necessary call to not butcher a replica dragoon frame) but still better than a $75,000.00 commitment for an original. Still looks quite nice in the pics.
I also have one on the way from Dixie, so you will be seeing it eventually

I like the performance you are getting with Kaido's conical bullets, but have noticed that Big Lube bullets has moulds that cast 210 grains for .44's, and I think 150 GRAINS for 36's with of course, their generous sized lube grooves which should be useful in matches by allowing longer shooting strings before cleaning because of the large loads of lube they carry compared to Kaido's bullets. This large load of lube should allow very long shooting strings if the bullets are sized and lubed with SPG or a like back powder lube; a shooter might be able to shoot an entire match without cleaning between stages. I hope, I hope, I hope. What is your opinion of these Big Lube Conicals for .36 and .44 percussion revolvers used in CASS events? I know that Kaido designed his moulds to produce accurate bullets for hunting and target work, but will they carry enough lube to allow a whole day's shooting before clean-up? I value and seek your input, I'V'E USED THE .45/250GR BIG LUBE BULLET IN CARTRIDGE COMPETITION AND HAVE FOUND THAT EVEN WITH THE HOLY BLACK THAT I CAN SHOOT AN ENTIRE MATCH WITHOUT HAVING TO STOP AND CLEAN MY REVOLVERS, OR WITH THE ..44/200 IN MY 44/40 RIFLE AS WELL. DO YOU THINK THAT THESE BIG LUBE BULLETS WILL DO AS WELL IN PERCUSSION REVOLVERS? Sorry about the upper case type, I didn't notice it until there was too much written to correct easily. Let me know what you think about those Big Lube bullets in Percussion revolvers used in match shooting please.
Donald Denison I use big lube bullets in black powder cartridges, but they would be very difficult to load in cap and ball revolvers because they don’t have a rebated heel. I haven’t shot extended strings with Kaido’s bullets without cleaning, so I don’t know if you could get through a match.
Big lube offers at least 3 bullets with rebated heels meant for cap and ball. I just checked, the .36 offering is only 90 grains, but is still heavier than a round ball and would it seems, be more effective on reactive targets. The .44 caliber designed for the Ruger Old Army has a second rebate designed for Italian replicas nominally in .44 Caliber that weighs 210 grains. I had given up on .36 cap and ball due to the lack of energy on reactive targets; maybe that 90 grain bullet will have enough power to take down those targets. That bullet designed for the ROA and Italian .44 REPLICAS LOOKS GOOD FOR SASS MATCHES AND LOOKS LIKE FROM THE DRAWINGS TO HAVE THE LARGE AND DEEP GREASE GROOVES THAT WORK SO WELL IN THE .45/250 CARTRIDGE BULLET THAT I HAVE USED SUCCESSFULLY. I THINK I WILL BUY BOTH THESE MOULDS, IT WOULD BE GOOD TO BE ABLE TO USE THE .36'S IN MATCHS HAVING REACTIVE TARGETS AGAIN. THAT 210 grain.44 bullet should give the 44 cap and ball revolvers real power and long shooting strings without cleaning. If you try Kaito's bullets for long strings of shooting, please report on the performance on You Tube. I'll try to get you a report on the Cap and Ball Big Lube bullets after shooting them .

archersfriend Adding Fillers to Powder charges such as Cream Of Wheat is a 20th Century Replica Shooters Invention. Percussion Revolvers were Never meant to be fired with any filler as they were the Real Deal in the 19th century, that required the most power generated to be able to stop man or beast quickly which they usually did. Using a filler lessens the power factor of the load. As they were the Glock's of their time and lives depended on the Percussion Revolvers Special Hot Pistol Powders were developed just for them in the mid 1850's. When I shoot or hunt with my Percussion revolvers, I never have used any Filler added to the powder nor shall I.
as far as round ball vs Kaido's designed bullet round ball doesnt have the weight as Kaido bullet a 255 gr wide nose bullet is far better choice for hunting
