I wonder if Drew knew that they were calculating the countries based on who won the battle, and not just where the battle was taken place.
He clearly did not😢
this is drew we're talking about of course he didn't
No
He knew 8:14
@@wolfboy8667 he knew and then forgot
The way drew says the Sea People's in excitement is my exact reaction lol
True
Yeah
People during the Bronze Age Collapse: Oh NO! The Sea Peoples!
People now: Oooh, The Sea Peoples!
frankly, for the map of battles, that is just propperly recorded battles. Frankly, europe just documented their squabbles way more than the rest of the world most of the time. It also help a lot that most of europes battles are in later parts of reccorded history, rather than the older less documented parts
And wikipedia isn't very used in China. So I guess only the really significant battles have a dedicated page.
Also, you have events like the mongols. Where even if a place like China did write down their wars, the records might have been destroyed.
Drew does mention this in the video
yeah the most battles would probably be in the middle east, as the ancient civilizations like Egypt, Assyr, Babylon battled there since thousands of years ago
@@Echoak95 I do believe China would beat them, though, since it's almost as old, but MUCH more bloodthirsty, with almost constant wars throughout their story...
I like when Drew was surprised seeing Sweden in XVII century, while almost all that time Sweden fought constantly. Also, Poland and Sweden were bumping their rankings 😂
Not sure it's the right niche but if anyone's obsessed with warfare I strongly recommend Schwerpunkt's videos series
Drew uuu would be better to recommend to.
It is absolutely insane that Byzantium was in the top ten up until the late 1700s.
More insane is that Rome was in top10 still right before WW1.
@@Bzhydackrome is still in the top ten at the end of the video, it's 8th with 259, but if you combine rome and bizantium's total it would be 7th with 366
Oh you like history? Name every battle.
The exam be like
If they count the Frankish Empire (whose eastern half was German) and the Kingdom of France as French battles they should have counted the HRE for Germany.
The difference is: The HRE wasn't actually an Empire, even though it was called like that. The closest similar modern thing as a comparison would be the European Union. Because each member of the HRE was technically an independent state/country. That's why they fought each other.. And also it was the reason they lost against Napoleon in the end and many people, especially students seeked a unified German Empire.
The Frankish Empire however was an actual Empire.
@@mehrsauphmann121it really wasn’t, and no ancient and medieval empire fits the modern definition of an empire. Each empire had a vassal and March system, where each leader had significant power because absolute rule did not and could not exist during that era due to it being impossible to communicate your will from thousands of miles in a short time.
If you loon at another video of the creator of this one, you can see that HRE and Prussia and Germany were counted for Germany
@@mehrsauphmann121 Historical misconception. Of cause the HRE was an empire. Just with a - at times - very loose grip on its provinces. It checks all the criteria. It was, in fact, the most powerful state in Europe for hundrets of years. That is because the kingdom of France was actually just as devided as the HRE, at times shrinking to just the area around Paris. The HRE is not being done justice historically, mostly because one 18th century French dude described the pityful remnants of it out of the point of view of an arch enemy. If you look at actual medival history the roles could not be clearer. Barbarossa and the crusades, stopping Ghengis Khan in Austria, the 30 years war and so much more.
@vloplob No, the HRE doesn't fill all the criteria. The HRE is just an alliance/confederation of hundreds of different German states, etc. but not its own state.
As I said, it's basically just like the EU, but only for german states, thus the name "of German Nations," and it was handled way more loose than the EU in comparison.
Like, the Kaiser don't even had the whole power over each single German state, mostly just over his own personal territory. He was more like a representative for international political affairs, but everything inside the HRE, each german state - e.g. Bavaria, Brandenburg, Saxony etc. ruled over their own country.
As I said, it was just a loose concept, basically a simple predecessor of the EU, but not it's own state/country.
The Kingdom of Frank's however was it's own state/country.
9:16 wait Rome just won a battle?
They went from 258 to 259
during the Risorgimento the government of the papal states was replaced by roman citizen and they ended up calling themselves Roman Republic. technically it still counts as rome even if it's like 1500 years later
I have to say this every time one of these videos or articles tries to do something similar but they use the English version of Wikipedia. Do the same map again with Baidu Baike, the Chinese version of Wikipedia, and there's gonna be like 20 battles in Europe.
No the author uses an algorithm that counts any wiki article in any language. That being said, for China you're right as wikipedia isn't that used in that country.
@@xenotypos it alseo skews the statistics for countries where wikipedia isnt so popular and prefer other websites
8:39 Many of those Swedish battles occurred during the Thirty Years War (1618-1648).
HAPPY EUROPEAN DAY OF LANGUAGES! 🎉
I feel like this is kinda misleading, because alot of battles haven't been recorded. I mean, think of ALL the years of chinese wars, or how mongolia has so few battles... It's clear that some places (like Rome and the US) jsut record more of those.
can we appreciate how he paused exactly at 1453
The saddest date in history
This article has accuracy of blind man shooting a flintlock pistol at 100 yards
It’s completely accurate, just a lot of battles weren’t recorded
@@Finnbobjimbobso it is inacurate
Ngl the entire map would probably be white if we included all the unrecorded battles, considering there could've been thousands of fights between unorganized tribes, groups and warbands.(Antarctica would be only continent with no battles as far as I know)
Also Francia/Frankish Empire should've been it's own thing, as Germanic Franks can't be called the french.
@10:22 🤔 what "battle" happened in Jacksonville, FL and somewhere in Nebraska in 2017? 🤨
This map is probably the defintion of Eurocentric. And I say that as a European.

Saying we don't have documentation about Africa is ridiculous! Ethiopians, Egyptians, Romans, Muslims, carthagians, Ottomans, and the Europeans all had major documentations of Africa, well, we lost some due to Alexander in Egypt, but still.
Here we go with more map of reviews by one and only drew😁
I'm suprised Rome just stayed for the entire thing. Rome is 8th at the end.
Including rap battles? 🤔
😂😂
Rome winning a final battle in 1849:🗿
>all the US-American kids
We are breaking him, lads. He's adopting the manner how non-Anglos talk about "Americans" lmao. Like in German we use "US-Amerikaner", or "Ami" for short (but nothing in between).
Surely not every battle was recorded
Petition for Drew to make a series covering Ace Combat and its multiple universes: [Day 244]
The .244 Holland & Holland Magnum cartridge was created in 1955 in Great Britain by deerstalker and rifle-maker David Lloyd of Pipewell Hall, Northamptonshire and Glencassley in Sutherland, Scotland, and is not to be confused with the smaller-cased and much milder 6 mm (.244 in) Remington. Stalking on extremely steep deer forests such as his own at Glencassley, Lloyd was in search of a "canyon rifle" cartridge that would shoot exceptionally fast and with a very flat trajectory across deep valleys and over distances out to 300 yards (270 m) and more, to make range estimation less critical for accurate bullet placement, and to deliver a hard-hitting bullet weighing a minimum of 100 grains. The .244 H&H Magnum easily met these criteria.
If every battle ever fought was documented and put on wiki then 90% of that map would be white from all the dots
Imagine how many battles would be there if they had the entire world
There were two dots on Australia... Darwin (Japanese bombing in WW2 and Perth... the only reason I can think Perth appears is because they're counting the Emu wars...
Petition for drew to make a two part Panama ball that sticks together with velcro
Australia’s had an easy run ayye, what about the battle of Emu?😂 🇦🇺
11:07: I think if the creator researched on Baidu Encyclopedia he'll get more documanted Chinese battles. However Baidu isn't that reliable since they're forced to appeal to the CCP and censor battles
There's literally thousands of battles in China between 700 and 200 BC during the Spring and Autumn as well as the Warring States period.
they forgot the battle between me and moms homemade chili in my bathroom.
Coming from East Africa, as I am, I instantly see that this is a terribly Eurocentric map. There are fewer than a dozen dots shown in my corner of Africa. Yet, ill-educated as I may be, I could name dozens of significant inter-tribal wars and battles waged in this region.
These are recorded battles. Sub-Saharan Africa didn't have written language until European colonisation. The only way of knowing about previously fought battles is from other sources such as archaeological digs or artwork depicting battles with enough accuracy to be considered legitimate.
what about battles in wars?
So Drew wants a wiki that covers _all_ battles

Either count the Franks and France separate, or count Byzantium and Rome together, not both.
france even with different names is in the same area that we call france, rome had an area in italy, the other one ... in turkey, i find it quite logical to separate the 2.
@@kam7r882 The franks came from a region between france and germany, and they split into west francia and east francia, which developed into France and Germany. Basically the same as with west rome & east rome.

I don't think the East has really well recorded battles. We should have more.
The conclusion: do not fight us in Europe as we will fight back.
drew making a 5 min video into a 11 min video:
Petition started today to make drew be forced to make romanian plushie
a more accurate map would look completely white in habitable areas it's just that we don't have a record of it
I wonder what France's losses are. Just like they had 1200 of recorded wins, you know they had a ton of losses.
By counting just it's european battles it's a little bit more than two third victories to a little bit less than one third defeats historian Niall Ferguson has the stats on that, if you include battles outside the european continent it must be overwhelmingly victories, i wouldn't be surprised if it's well above 10 victories to 1 defeat
defeat for france means victory for an other nation so those battles are included in this video, France has a good ratio
"you know they had a ton of losses"
but who said that? who invented a crazy fantasy that France has lost many times?? France has won 3/4 of its wars, just a few examples: France has won 16 times against Spain and lost 5 times against it, France has won 5 times against Russia and lost 2 times against it , even against its greatest enemy: France has won 24 times against England - United Kingdom and they have lost 11 times against them.
Statistically, France has the best win lose ratio. White flag people is just a myth, they almost took over Europe not once (Rchelieu-Mazzarino), not twice (Louis XIV), three times (Napoleon) and defeated a military state (the German Empire)
Americans and the British Commonwealth were a big contribution to France surviving WW1, otherwise France would have lost like franco-prussian war

Should have colored and signed at least the first 100 battles on the map.

France and England are also two of the oldest continously existing nations in the world, in that they formed and unified as an entity long ago and have remained so to this day wheras other countries like Germany and Italy are very young and so they wouldnt have had as many battles by default.
Im also curious as to how they counted battles won by 'France' like are they considering west francia france? Or the Kingdom and Republic eras of France later? Like what are they including in the french numbers.
Indeed
Congrats your first
What battle happened on the shore of James Bay?
This would be so much more interesting if history in Germany wouldn't be just WW 2. Not that it's a bad thing to teach us about that but it was a bit too much. About 90% were the last 200 years and at least 40% the bad stuff.

The map for battles is not great, especially during the medieval era. You also should know that this is a collection of some battles written in the English Wikipedia, a small compilation of mostly only main battles of historically significant wars, excluding skirmishes that used to happen between cities.
As I can see, it doesn't include battles of the central Asian turks, except a few.
This is definitely a case of English language wikipedia primarily using sources in English sources and European languages. I guarantee Asian language sources are neglected for practical reasons of what English language editors can actually read.
I love the fact that when Drew said Byzantine empire will soon die he stop in 1453 xD in the minute 7:07
