How nonprofits fail communities of color - and what to do instead | Olga González | TEDxMileHigh

  • Olga González believes nonprofits often underestimate the communities they serve. They swoop in, she says, with outside resources and money but ignore the assets these communities already possess. That's why she endorses the promotora model, where a nonprofit trains people from the community they serve to provide outreach, advocacy, and services. Here, González shares several success stories of promotoras in action - from distributing masks & vaccines to farmworkers during the COVID-19 pandemic to monitoring air pollution near a local oil refinery. Olga González has worked in the nonprofit sector for 28+ years. She is currently the Executive Director of Cultivando, a nonprofit that cultivates leadership in the Latinx community to advance health equity through advocacy, collaboration, and policy change. As CEO of O.G. Consulting Services, she facilitates trainings and workshops on equity, racial justice, and healing. Olga was born in Mexico and is the proud descendant of Indigenous Yaqui/Otomi people. She, along with her husband, is raising their children to be the next generation of fierce and compassionate social justice warriors. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The same mindset we are doing with our handicapped community here in Manaoag, Pangasinan, Philippines. The everyone in our community is the asset and we all need to believe it first.

The godfather of habit building, William James, wrote:
    “To change one’s life:
    Start immediately.
    Do it flamboyantly.
    No exceptions.”
Because our time is finite, there is no reason to wait. In fact, there is every reason to begin. When you decide on a change you would like to make, ask yourself: what is the first step?
The entire vision of your ideal future is actually a series of first steps. They just happen to come one after the other. These are all moments you initiate. One little step at a time.

What is the music at the beginning of the video? Did TEDxTelks create this kind of music themselves, or is it just a snippet from other music or even a song? If the second, then write the name of the music, please.

You know my great grandmother my grandmother told my grandmother that the day that we experiencede experiencing what happened they saw a people being divided but my grandmother said it needs to happen because people will see clearly once and for all Where their hearts sold mine and the things and their children's well being will be need to be looked at. So we as people we've got to just relax we've got to listen to wakey music we got to look to see if there's people we can help take our kids to a special place do anything that let don't let these people with snakes coming out of their mouths bite us Because we are gonna get over this I know it doesn't seem like it but if my grandmother great grandmother and my grandmother and my grandmother and my aunt say so I know it's gonna happen

We need more PhDs and Dr degrees in our communities.
People lie to us and we fail to notice it.
Undergraduate degrees aren't graduated. When you go to college in most countries including Latin America, you actually graduate with a graduate degree and become an expert in your field.

It's called sponsors. It's hard knowing your tax mandatory dollars don't have provisions for Americans those needing help, the toll is hardships and waiting list, barriers held against working class Americans that can't afford much after taxes, mortgages or rents and child supports.Fathers working hard needing agencies that can't help them thru the legal processes because they don't fit the marginalized lines. Always pro immigrants but less Agencies for much needed when it's a steady stream of needing in middleclass being pushed out services, they only want to know your immigration status and your income. If your income is $2400. And your take home is $2800. You are between a rock and a hard place. Telling landlords your income is the door opening for rent increases.

I think I might understand a little bit of this. People don’t want to just donate money and run away they want to help. They want to be involved. So to say they’re not letting the people there help, I believe they just want to help also

That’s not what she’s saying here, it’s clear that you watched this video with preconceived notions. She is saying that we should empower individuals within marginalized communities to aid their own in acquiring resources and information, not relying on outside groups that are not familiar with the lived experiences of these groups to hypothesize on what individuals in these communities need. This video is trying to highlight the need for targeted aid that addresses the needs that may go overlooked by people who don’t have the same experience. Have compassion, we are meant to lead with love.

It would be nice if the white working class realized they have more in common with a new immigrant than the billionaire/ownership class sitting in their 22-room home with full-time staff attending to their needs. it's grotesque what wealth does to human behaviour, yet we still rather tell immigrants to get out than deal with our laziness and sense of entitlement. If you are not indigenous to North America, your family were immigrants somewhere down your family tree. Inherited wealth is what builds success in 'Merica. Poor immigrants are the majority, a good damn chance your family were poor immigrants too.
