How to Paint With a Sponge Start to Finish

  • To create an acrylic abstract painting using a kitchen sponge, begin by gathering your materials: acrylic paints, a canvas, and a clean kitchen sponge. I used 5 sponges. They were cleaned but used.
Choose a few acrylic paint colors that complement each other, and pour small amounts onto a palette or disposable surface. Dip a corner of the sponge into the first color and gently dab it onto the canvas, creating random patterns or textures. In this tutorial, I show you exactly the colors I used and how I placed the colors on the sponge.
Continue adding layers with different colors, allowing them to blend naturally as you work. You can experiment by pressing the sponge in different ways, using its flat side for broader strokes or the edges for more detailed textures. As you build up layers, adjust the pressure to achieve depth and dimension in your abstract design.
Once satisfied with the composition, let the painting dry completely, and finish with a varnish to protect the artwork. The sponge technique can be learned pretty quickly especially if you start with limited colors and on a small canvas.
Let me know if you're going to attempt this, or if you have. If you have any questions, please leave me a comment. I make sure to answer all questions as soon as possible.
    Thanks for watching!

I enjoyed this lesson. The results are wonderful. I like both orientations. The “upside down” one feels more interesting to me. If the painting was mine, I would let the buyer decide how they would hang it. I wouldn’t sign on the front bc that determines how a person can hang it. May I ask what brand of sponges you’re using?. Thank you.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thank you. I often wire my paintings in a couple of ways. The buyer can decide. Honestly, the sponges came from the dollar store. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching 😀

@@SorayaZiziArtist Oh Yes, I hadn’t thought about wiring the painting in a couple different ways. It’s a Better idea! Thank you so much for your response on the sponges. I’m in my 70s and have started painting about 4 years ago. Still learning so much. Have tried a little bit of abstract but found it so hard to soften any edges which wasn’t very appealing to me. But I’ll try the sponge technique. I’ll practice first on a small canvas. I think it will look better than using my brush. Thanks so much for the lesson.👍🏼💕
